I'm getting my old 3GS back that I've lent to my friend,

i want to use it for development, and i was wondering for me to take full advantage of developing it and testing on the 3GS,

can i simply switch sim cards from my current iPhone 4/S? i mean to test the cellular data and all.

Yup absolutely. Just link up the 3GS to Xcode and your dev account and you should be good to go from there on out.
