10.6.8 update on atom

I have a Sony Vaio P with atom Z530 processor. My first attempt with MacOS on it was with Leopard 10.5.6. It installed fine and updated to 10.5.8 without problems. But because wifi kexts doesn't work with leopard, I wanted to update my install to Snow Leopard. Initially I installed iPortable 10.6.2 on my hd which was working flawlessly (including usb, wifi wwan and sound) booting the included atom_kernel. Then I updated to 10.6.8 using nawcom's legacy kernel (http://blog.nawcom.com/?p=791). At the first boot I got stucked at "still waiting for the root device". So I booted using my original iPortable 10.6.2 USB Stick and replaced some ATA kexts (IOATAFamily and IntelPIIXATA) from 10.6.2 on usb stick to my 10.6.8 on hd. Then it booted but still with some problems, like system very slow and unresponsive, drives don’t mount automatically, wifi disabled, boot takes longer, menu bar locks up frequently… it was really hard to use it after 10.6.8 upgrade. I don't know if that was some kexts problem or if this nawcom's kernel is having problems with Vaio P hardware. Do anyone have a solution for this? I really need 10.6.8 on my machine, but now I had to downgrade to 10.6.2 for it to be usable. Thanks!

10.6.8 has had a lot of problems relative to updating. Some people have had better luck upgrading to 10.6.7 first then upgrading to 10.6.8. Save your 10.6.7 kexts so you can use them to replace any 10.6.8 kext which is not working well. The 10.6.7 legacy kernel can be found here: http://www.osx86.net/view/1062-legacy_kernel_for_os_x_10.6.7_-_darwin_10.7.0.html

For instance, some fixes including wireless are listed here: http://3rr0rists.net/guides/fix-all-issues-after-updating-to-os-x-10-6-8.html

Great rlf! Thanks for your help. I'm enjoying 10.6.2 for a while now because everything is working on it, except the GMA500... even the generic WWAN 3G Internal Modem and the GPS are working properly!! :star_sunglasses:

But as soon as I have some time I will download 10.6.7 combo update and try it. If everything keeps working I will try 10.6.8 again.

One last question. I was wondering if it is possible to run Lion on my machine. I saw that the same nawcom made a 10.7 kernel for atom processors. I know that this kernel is 32bit because I booted iAtkos 10.7.2 Lion Installation Disk on my Dual Core Inspiron notebook using this kernel. But when I try to boot the Installation disk on my Sony Vaio P, it just loads the kexts as usual at the chimera boot screen and then I get a black screen of death. There is nothing written on it, the computer doesn't restart, doesn't boot, just keep there immovable with a black screen (and I booted with -v args). Is it possible to be a problem with the kernel, or can be kexts problems? ACPI maybe?

Thanks!

I followed rlf counsel and updated to 10.6.7. I just want to report that everything is working fine. I just had to use ###### "usb rollback" to gain USB functionality again and of course use the modded atom 10.6.7 kernel (link on rlf post) instead of vanilla 10.6.7 updated kernel. After that, the system started working flawlessly just as it was previously with 10.6.2, but now I can use Xcode4 and other updated softwares on 10.6.7 =)
