The wiki will be updated when 1.19 is released later this month to make our custom skin easier to maintain. I'll look later into a Q&A, but we don't want to hinder real users too much

Try asking them a relatively trivial question, but something the spammers won't easily figure out.

@Alessandro - Yeah, me too. And if you may notice, I pretty much implemented that Q&A thingy in my own wiki:

http://huckjones.strawberryforum.org/w/index.php?title=Special:UserLogin&type=signup

It just needs an easy yet effective question, though.

Yeah, but there's still a swath of zombies registering and creating junk pages, mostly shoe and luxury bag bots from China. If you want to you can try these in the wiki's extensions folder:

Oh, and I was also permabanned by mistake there. I only intended to add HCL entries and blank spammer pages as well, nothing else. :)

What's your account name? If you'd like to help on the wiki I can make you a sysop.

It's going to take a little time, it took a while to perfect our spammer controls here.

Any help is better than none :)

I've taken a quick look, will check out the configuration tomorrow and see. Have you had any success using them on a real site?

Yep, it does curb out the spam on my site: http://huckjones.str...l:RecentChanges

It doesn't really have as much users as anyone would like, but being that the OSX86 Wiki's only intended as a knowledgebase for OS X hackers I don't think that user registrations would be a problem if the Q&A and Stopforumspam integration would be implemented.

I'm a bit concerned users won't be able to answer the questions easily.

Two small changes, re-added a regex spam protection filter http://wiki.osx86project.org/wiki/index.php/Special:SpamRegex and required all users to enter a CAPTCHA for the moment. The blacklist only stops links, whereas the regex is full page. We'll see how this goes while I look through the extensions to find a good balance.

hmmm... maybe but we have to cater to people who don't speak English too. I saw your test page for the regex, I modified the extension to not block sysops :)

That's a problem. And I really do hate sniffing out spam accounts. We can try that for once if you don't mind, but if it ain't that effective, then we'll see if there are alternatives.

And I see you didn't try out the Check Spambots extension. I use it personally and it did filter out the bad ones who get past the Q&A. Since you did point out that not everyone can speak English, then at least this one can filter out the {censored}.

And I was thinking maybe you should tie the user registrations to the forums here, as in accounts work on both here and on the wiki, ala gtamodding.com. They never had a spambot problem with that system on.

I installed the Check Spambots extension with API keys for Project Honeypot and BotScout, hopefully that will trim things down to an acceptable level. I want to try and have a solution with the least amount user interaction required.

So far it has supposedly blocked 5 anonymous users, 1 showing up in two databases.

I'd love to be able to do that, but with a userbase on the forum and wiki, along with the 2 new wiki's we've started, it'd be a mess trying to integrate them effectively. People with different names in different databases, password integration, etc.

Seeing as it's working fairly well I'm going to leave it for the moment. I wouldn't bother blocking/protecting everything related to spammers either - if they're being blocked it's extra work for not much gain.

I'm not concerned about junk accounts, we have hundreds of thousands of them here which are occasionally pruned. If it becomes a problem I'll look into it.

OK, noted. BTW, how about this? http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:Bad_Behavior

But if you ask me, letting the bad guys in can be a PITA on the bandwidth department (in extreme cases, that is). But since actual spam has been reduced upon installation of the plugins I guess that might have been a good compromise.
