I have retail Snow Leopard and I've tried booting with #####, ##### Legacy, Empire EFI, Nawcom ModCD and I've tried with all options I can think of. But I keep getting a kernel panic when I boot it.

Any ideas?

My System is

AMD Phenom II X4 960T

8GB Kingston HyperX DDR3 1600 RAM

500GB SATA HDD

GTS 250 Graphics card

I got further, Much further! It's installed and working well! :) got WiFi and stuff, only problem now is Audio doesnt work.. Installed VoodooHDA but All I get is crackling sound from the speakers, I don't know the exact audio chipset I have, its an MSI motherboard.

Also when connected via DVI the screen doesn't fill the monitor and has black border. Any ideas?

Alright, I had that same strange crackling noise, but it stopped by itself. So if it does not, you might wanna get that checked up, cus I have no idea. As for your screen, Have you gotten your video card to work for it? You can tell by your screen resolution. If it's really crappy, then be sure to tell me.

And have you updated to 10.6.8? Because if you have not, wait. Because you need to go through certain steps to do it, try this tutorial: http://www.osx86.net/desktops/9746-guide-os-x-10-6-amd.html

Or this one: http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=253767

Sorry for the wait, tell me if it works out.

Im in the process of updating right now, I read all about updating as when I tried before I realised my fault. Got the legacy kernel ready, charmeleon is installed (but I can't boot from it.. never works dunno, only works booting from ModCD

Also no the static doesn't disappear, when I install kexts for my audio which is ALC887 I found out, it just makes everything stop and OSX can't even detect an audio device before, it picked up all my ports, mic, output front and back etc, but now nothing. I got back to the basic VoodooHDA and now its all there, but crackling still. Nothing else. its a constant static sort of pop every second..

K, you could try using ##### for that bootloader problem. In the 2nd tutorial I gave you It should tell you what to check off, one of the reasons your audio could be screwed up is because you are using an outdated version, I think ##### could also fix that too. So tell me tomorrow if it works.

Hey the bootloader was working, it seems to be temper mental, works when it wants to. Sometimes it works by just leaving it and it boots with no flags needed, sometimes flags, sometimes just panic as soon as the boot starts, mod cd panics a little now and all I did was install the drivers for my Wireless card off the disc that it came with instead of downloaded ones, to be sure it was the correct version. My network card has OS X drivers for it luckily :)

I'll try multiboot, and I have tried the latest version of VoodooHDA and a ALC887 specific driver which is quite recent and people have had luck with.. so far no luck. When I installed my retail disc in Virtualbox, surprisingly it worked perfectly. with no need to add any other drivers or stuff, had to do lots of tweaks for distro's but not retail, i thought retail would need more because its made for specific hardware :P

Okay I have sound now! Sort of, static sound still there but now theres sound from OSX now, such as pops and alert sounds from applications. Only problem is I installed one of the boot options in ###### and now it just fails to boot at all, doesnt even try, on -v it just shows a black screen, when you hit enter it doesnt attempt to do anything..

Also another note, when booting from the bootloader it loads the graphics and stuff fine, all at correct resolution but nothing else loads, suddenly my wifi wont open, itunes wont open, safari crashes after about 20 seconds every time.

But when booting off ModCD wireless starts up correctly and everything else does too. but no graphics, also when using ModCD it puts the screen slightly to the right so a thin black bar at left border.

Also not a big issue but can be annoying, when it starts up and gets to login/desktop sometimes i have to wait up to 20 minutes before being able to do anything, mouse moves but cant click or type anything with keyboard.

Alright, I thought it over a bit and I think know what's going on. AMD's are pure 64bit systems right? So when you installed your bootloader did you have it so that it will boot up in 64 bit mode? Because I think they have an option to make it so that has it boot up in 64-bit mode every time.

I would try to re-download chimera:

I found that you may need a couple patches, try this tutorial here: http://osx86.co/f57/...-install-t3727/

Don't give up! If you figure out how to do it, I want to know how you did it.

AMDs use legacy kernels. Chimera is designed for vanilla kernels (a.k.a. mach_kernel), so you will have to specify your kernel at the boot prompt, such as:

legacy_kernel -v

Then you can change the kernel entry in the com.apple.boot.plist (or org.chameleon.boot.plist) in /Extra.

What version of Snow Leopard (10.6.x) are you using? I may have solutions for wireless etc. if they persist.

I am on 10.6.8 and the wireless works just sometimes when I boot its like it failed to boot everything, things crash on startup, wireless utility even itunes sometimes.

I'll re-install the bootloader and put 64 bit and I'll set the boot flags, I'll get back to you after

Only if you are using a patched version of AppleHDA. If you are using VoodooHDA however, that's a different story; if it doesn't work you reinstall Voodoo.

Hey guys, thanks for all the help so far, its slowly getting there with the more i work on it. Only concern now is my hard drive is slowly filling up.. I do alot of work on windows for youtube, like videos, recording games etc. I wanted mac to be my daily general use os since its smooth and fast, only problem is I don't have a large hard drive. So i'm going to delete the installation.. not happy with it since it took so long to get working but I need the space sadly, So i'm gonna buy another hard drive and start again :) all of the info in here has been huge help and will help when I start it from scratch when my new hard drive comes! Thanks!

Well i did a scratch install and its worked a little better this time around, sound worked out of the box (sort of..) so did graphics. Sound works but staticy and theres the popping sound every like second or so.

Also for some reason... nothing loads when using the chamaleon bootloader, itunes, safari, wireless, nothing seems to open and i just get the thing saying to send the report and stuff or ignore. But when I boot with ModCD it all loads up fine.. why isn't chamaleon working? I thought all bootloaders pretty much did the same..

Also after installing some things in ###### it panics on boot now.. it gets so far when using ModCD but panics as well...

The panic happens just after FakeSMC, should I not have installed this..? I don't think I had it already, I wasn't sure. Is there a way to remove it without going into the system?

They do.

Don't use ######. I'll get you a boot loader package.

FakeSMC is a must. You cannot boot without it.

Hm.. wonder why nothing is working then.. everything boots up fine with the ModCD but when using Chimera or Chamaleon nothing works, NO applications run and I mean it, theres only a few that do like settings, midi settings and stuff.

Also would using GRUB bootloader work? I have an Ubuntu install and the bootloader picks up both 32 bit and 64 bit boot entries for OSX.

GRUB can point to Chameleon, but you must have Chameleon (and Chimera is just a different version of Chameleon) to boot OS X.

If I'm wrong, you'd have to be quite the Linux geek to set it up anyways (I am not one at all).

Im still stuck here, no idea why its not working.. nothing wants to run when booting with the HDD, but using ModCD it works.. should that even be possible? I get the idea that the ModCD is booting something differently from the Chamaleon and its working. How can I make chamaleon boot the same way.

Also would a retail Lion work? Just in case it's worth going into, since its newer would it work better? Or would I only have luck with a distro?

Just like "Chimera", "#####" and "EmpireEFI" etc etc, ModCD is Chameleon.

In your case the important difference is that ModCD is configured better than the Chameleon installation on your hard drive.

Examine the configuration files on the ModCD and mount and open the RAM disk image (preboot.dmg) and look at its contents. Use System Profiler (or type kextstat in Terminal) to compare which drivers are loaded when you boot from the ModCD versus when booting from hard disk, in order to find out which files and settings to replicate on your HDD Chameleon setup.

You can pipe the kextstat output to a text file for easy viewing like this:

kextstat -k > ~/desktop/blabla.txt

Once with the ModCD, once without it, obviously not using the same file name (blabla.txt) twice so as to not overwrite the first one.
