So I did this and now I have:

1. 120gb Patriot Pyro SSD - primary OS drive

2. 500gb Seagate Momentus XT Hybrid drive - secondary drive

3. Superdrive or optical or CDROM is now GONE - external enclosure

on my Macbook Pro mid-2011 model.

You need to get this caddy: http://www.newmodeus...products_id=410

The above caddy is the cheapest with good build quality and good for heat dissipation.

There is another model named OWC Data Doubler (http://eshop.macsale...ting/DDAMBS0GB/) but I didn't like it because more expensive and made out of plastic, seems flimsy and breakable.

Anyway, get one of the caddy and youtube how to replace the superdrive:

Voila! Now you have ample of storage space in your MbP.

My lappy is flying with all these storage and SSD. I'm loving it.

Edit: See screenshot for my final product.

Thank you for your experience. I will make just two important remarks:

  • OWC Data Doubler is made of metal.
  • Additional disk if it is HDD, should be set in place instead of the main SSD.

So the SSD-drive should be mounted in the caddy. It's all about - a sudden motion sensor,

which is very important for the proper operation of the HDD in a shaking or falling.

  • 2 months later...

i also removed my disc drive and placed a ssd with a caddy, its best to use the ssd in the caddy in my experience due to no moving parts and heat, its worth it though, my mac 2.26duo boots in 15 seconds,
