Create a virtual screen and access it with remote desktop? [solved]

I'm not sure if this is possible at all, but it seems like it would be useful to me.

I have a laptop and a desktop, both running OS X. The desktop is running 10.5.8 and it has two monitors attached to it. The laptop sits next to those monitors, using it's inbuilt screen.

I use the desktop to run Logic. While I'm using Logic, the laptop sits mostly unused except to idle on Linux or to offload processing with Logic Node in OS X. It also acts as a synergy server.

I was wondering if it were possible to create an additional virtual screen on the desktop, which could then be accessed with a VNC viewer on the laptop. This means I could have my desktop more or less running over three screens, while still allowing me to offload processing to the laptop's processor. It seems like a waste to have the laptop sitting there with nothing much on the screen except a browser.

I can certainly access the desktop with VNC and it works fine, but of course it is only a mirror of what I can already see on the two monitors.

Is such a thing doable?
