installing Chameleon and AHCI SATA mode don't play nice

I'm trying to install OSX onto my friend's Lenovo Ideapad Y550P and for some reason, I can get a perfectly good version of Snow Leopard installed until I try to install Chameleon onto the internal drive. Once I install Chameleon onto the internal drive, I can't even get the Lenovo splash screen to appear -- including the options to go into the BIOS or boot options menu.

If I physically remove the internal drive, however, and put it in an external USB enclosure and boot from there, OSX runs just fine.

Alternatively, if I have my SATA mode set to Compatible instead of AHCI, then I can get past the post/boot splash screen and into Chameleon, but then I get "still waiting for root device" after that. Any help with this would be much appreciated! And of course, I can offer more details as needed.
