I recommend getting something external, USB or Firewire. You can take it with you, use it with laptops, on someone elses PC or Mac, etc etc..

http://us.focusrite.com/usb-audio-interfaces/scarlett-6i6 for example. This gets you the same I/Os as the Maya plus MIDI and an extra headphone output.

Read the user guide (click downloads) to see what you can do with it. The only (very minor) inconvenience that I can see is that it isn't bus powered - it uses an external power supply.

I like the idea of using the spdif i/o as an effects send, I didn't know that was possible. I have the older version of the 6i6, the Saffire 6 USB, which I like a lot. It only has two inputs though, the 6i6 allows recording all 4 inputs simultaneously, it has two extra line level inputs on the back that the Saffire 6 doesn't have.

Scarlett MixControl + driver from Jan 20th for Mavericks is here:

I also have this sound card but so far no luck on 10.8.

I try at all costs to avoid USB for the latency issues. It appears that now the ESI Maya xtE soundcard is running on my ML 10.8 system by using one of the older drivers, not the newest one. The driver that worked is MAYA44_XTe-Mac-v1_07 and is available on the ESI site for download. The 1.08 driver did not work on 10.8. All analog and digital inputs and outputs are functioning correctly. This could be an option for those needing ADAT in and ADAT out on osx86/hackintosh builds.

Someone who requires ADAT in their setup probably has an audio interface that costs a lot more money than what we are discussing here. I'd like to hear what Coo'see will be doing, it's easier to recommend something when you have some idea what it will be used for :D

I don't have any latency issues with my Saffire 6, and that's USB 1.0, which is fine for recording one or two channels at a time. I did have to buy a separate USB PCI-E expansion card to get latency down, but that's a known issue that pertains only to the Saffire 6, which needs to be connected directly to a "root hub" in order to get the lowest possible latency, on both OS X and Windows. The 6i6 does not have this problem.

Anyway, I imagine there would be issues if I had to use 8 inputs simultaneously or something like that, but it's just great for solo recording one or two channels at a time.

Virtual instruments are fine, perfectly playable - even drums - and it (as well as the 6i6) has "passthrough" monitoring, which means zero latency monitoring while live recording.

With my Saffire 6, the only way you'll see latency enough to be annoying, in a live recording situation, is if you are recording with a VST effect applied, because then you can obviously not use "direct monitoring".

I'm sure the same goes for the 6i6.

never bought a card from ESI, to expensive and there support is awful, because there's none !

they released a new version - ESI MAYA44 eX - which has macOS driver support, if someone is interested - 169 € /

using - Creative Sound Blaster Audigy RX - right now, bought it for 20 € and with the modified kx driver everything's fine :-)

The modified kx audio driver is the kx audio driver mod by ITzTravelInTime? because if yes i am the person behind that mod :)

thank you so much - works perfect - i saved more than 100 bucks, because of you

yes, and I have also dome some other test on my modded driver, I have treated the optical out of the card on Mac and it works!, but if you want to discuss about the audits rx it's better to go in the kx audio driver mod thread, because we are going a little bit off topic
