Hi, from when I know a thing like Computer - I Know only Windows ( 95,then98,now XP - SP2 ). Now I've heard only rumours or smthn about MAC, cause in my country it isn't very popular. I've used Linux for a while ( few month's) but i didnt like it, so i decidet to keep my little little server on it only and I'll just keep using Windows. (I used Slackware 10.2, Mandriva 10.x , Fedora Core 5...) ...Now i wana escape Windows, and i want to use Macintosh, but I have NO idea's about it! ... Is it simple or hard to swich from WIN to MAC? And I Love gaming ( Counter - Strike, LineAge2 ...) ...is MAC Gaming compitable? Well yeah, somebody explain something about macintosh, please. Thank you :P

If you approach Mac and OS X as if you have never used a computer before, it will be very easy to learn and use - much easier that Win XP. However, if you start using it based upon how you use Win XP now you will probably get a little frustrated initially. Even so, the learning curve is VERY short, and in close to no time you will be wondering why you ever stuck with windows in the first place.

Gaming has always been good, though there have traditionally been less titles for Macs and their release dates are later than for PCs. However, this is likely to change in the future since Macs now use Intel processors. If worst comes to worst, you can use Boot-Camp (software you can download for free from Apple) and install Win XP on a second partition on your new Mac and play games that way.

If you're thinking about trying a Mac, definitely go for it. The interface is immensely better than windows and has rock solid stability and security due to its unix roots. I'm fairly sure, once you start using it, you'll love it!

Games is the only thing that ABSOLUTELY [EDIT] limited in OSX...

The great thing about these machines is they can actually run XP just like any other computer. Many people have setup their systems to where everyday things like e-mail, internet, chat, moviemaking etc are on OSX and simply boot XP when they feel like playing a game.

So it's really the best of both worlds... limited insecurities since you're not running XP all the time, and the simplicity of most software available for Mac

I'm sure you'll be anything but pleased...

Its a yes for Photoshop on Mac but you should specify if you are planning on a real mac or a hackintosh. On a hackintosh photoshop runs at terribly slow speeds because it is not universal binary yet. I don't know about the speed of Photoshop on a real Mac yet though. If you are one of the people that buys photoshop I would definately wait for it on Universal or Intel platform.

the only legal way to get it is to buy a whole new system, an iMac or a MacBook Pro. you probably would be able to get it if you downloaded osx through a torrent hough, and you can find out about that at http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showforum=85

  • 2 weeks later...
I have no idea what mac should I Try!

I need Photoshop - Dreamweaver - Counter Strike - Lineage. Mozilla FireFox :)

Photoshop - Available on OSX

Dreamweaver - Available on OSX (I actually prefer doing websites on OSX over Windows)

Mozilla (Firefox, Thunderbird etc.) - All available on OSX

Games... I never really played that much games, and never on OSX. But like others have said... With Bootcamp you could have a windows installation on the same machine, and just boot into Windows when you want to play games.

Also available on Mac OSX: MS Office, Openoffice, Opera, most Adobe applications, Apache webserver, PHP, MySQL database... and so on. You can find native applications for most work. Especially opensource software is often widely available on OSX.

1. you can try hackintosh first then decide, browse around the forum and wikipedia, im sure you'll get some info. That way you can "feel" it

2. find an apple store, and make friend with them, try it on on regular basis, and try to install your desired softwares (ask them)

3. find a friend who has a mac, and borrow it ( maybe its hard to do..)

good luck,

I still don't understand why people say that Mac gaming sucks. The games for Mac are just as good as those for PCs. And with Cider coming out, people will have no reason to complain about Mac gaming.

Maybe they only mean 'less title' of games in Mac :) But with BootCamp should be no problem anymore, right?

The linux distros you tried are more mainstream and for enterprise or commercial business users. You should user something more user friendly like Ubuntu, and if you can't download large files then Puppy is a good idea.
