Digital Performer 5.1 on hackintosh questions

Hi.

First post here as I've just come across the whole hackintosh thing.

I have a dual 1.8 G5 running DP 5.1 and have hit the CPU wall with some of my larger VI projects. I have this dream where I can complete an entire project without having to bounce VIs and plugs to disk to free up CPU and retain the flexibility and playability (maximum hardware buffer of 256 samples) of running everything in real time right through to printing a stereo mix. I use mostly light VIs (Vanguard, Filterscape,), a few heavyish plugs (Hydratone, altiverb) and run Reason in Rewire mode for most sampler duties.

I can't afford a Mac Pro for a good while but the idea of a fast hackintosh (maybe even Core 2 duo based) could be an alternative, so I guess I'm looking for experiences/advice that might be relevant to this sort of activity and point my in the direction of hardware people have found reliable.

I currently run three monitors with a second video card in the G5, but I think I could cut that back to two. My interface is a Metric Halo Uln/2 (firewire). I have a USB midi interface (MOTU fastlane). Ummm....thats about it I guess.

Any help/advice greatly appreciated.

Cheers.

Bill.

Whoops, forgot to mention that I notice a few people that have posted here use DP so I'd be interested in comparisons between DPs performance on G5 PPC hardware and Intel.

Cheers.

Thanks for your reply Retroz. I had read the really long Conroe box thread so I realise there are a number of alternatives floating around. It's hard to distill all that info down into something you can get your head around, but I gather most things can be made to work. Dual monitors seems to be an issue though.

I guess I was hoping for info from people who were specifically using a Conroe box as a DAW with dedicated audio hardware (like your mackie). And also some indication of what to expect performance wise with these types of applications, rather than just an xbench score which can often be pretty misleading.

Ok. Seeing as no-one has experiences to relate on the comparitive performance of DP on their Hackintosh as compared to a PPC Mac, how about Logic Express users?

Has anyone used Logic Express on both a PPC Mac and their Hackintosh, and if so, how do they compare in terms of plugin and track count and general performance allround? System specs would be great of course.

Thanks in advance.

Bill.
