Guide for Acer Aspire 3830T-6417

It took me about 3 days to get everything working so I thought I would share my experience. The Acer Aspire 3830T-6417 has a 13.3" screen and Core i3-2310 with no internal dvd drive. Amazon offered it for $479 back in August and it sold out in hours so I expect a lot of people out there have this model. After much experimentation, I was able to get almost everything working:

* HD 3000 with full QE/CI and res change

* internal Wifi

* trackpad with 2-finger scroll and gestures

* audio

Sleep doesn't work and I don't know about ethernet. Here's what you do:

First, install 10.6.3:

1. Restore 10.6.3 retail dvd to 8gb flash drive with Disk Utility (you must use a flash drive, it doesn't work from the dvd)

2. Plug ext. dvd drive into left usb 2.0 port, 8gb flash into right

3. Boot ##### 3.11, then press F5

4. Launch installer (on 8gb) with -v

5. At installer screen, unplug dvd drive, insert usb mouse plug

6. Use disk utility to partition disk as GUID

7. Customize options, uncheck all but Rosetta (optional)

8. On reboot, unplug 8gb flash, insert mouse, and boot with #####.

9. Press F5 and then boot new partition with –v

10. At Welcome, press Fn + F8 to mute distorted audio

Next, update to 10.6.8:

1. run 10.6.8 updater but don’t reboot

2. Run ##### 3.80 (must use Chimera 1.4, not 1.5 which is in 3.90) with these options, but dont reboot

#####

VoodooHDA 0.2.72

IOPCIFamily Fix

IOUSBFamily Rollback

Nullcpupowermanagement

Voodoo Controller

Macbook Pro 8,1

Don't select:

USB 3.0 (causes system freeze when port used)

Voodoo Trackpad (causes trackpad to not work at all)

3. after ##### is done, open terminal, and replace /boot with Kyle_c’s boot file (attached)

4. reboot

WIFI-- Install kext (not kernel) from here with ##### (no modifications necessary):

http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=257011

In my first attempts, I used ##### 3.90 which claims to support HD 3000 natively but all I ever got was a black screen. I also tried Lion, but that was unsuccessful as well.

this guide is so useful it should be a sticky

thank you.

i have things to add,,,many of the laptops use hard drives that do not allow either chameleon or chimera to boot (4k or something weird like that) so the best way is to take the hdd out of the laptop and connect it as a usb hdd.

Now one more thing..kyle boot file is used to replace the original boot file that the bootloader installs(chameleon/chimera) so the kyle'c boot file has to be renamed to boot and the .txt must also be removed, thats done in mac os by right clicking on the file then show info then name and file extension, change name and check the hide extension box and save.

terminal command for remove ir rm filename and to copy is cp filename (for details google how to install chameleon manually)

one more thing,,,i have succeeded in installing Lion and boots well with chimera1.5.. but the only reason for me to go back to Snow Leopard is the fact that wireless didnt work on Lion for some reason? maybe u have an idea?)

Sleep etc is no go still,,although im new to this and need to do more research.

Thanks once more for the guide.

Thanks once more for the guide.

I have the 3830TG and I follow your instructions, but the bootloader never sees the external USB copy of MacOS...any ideas?

I restored the DVD directly to the drive in MacOS. Partition scheme GUID, but that shouldn't matter since I overwrote the whole drive.

Thanks!

To install SL i also used USB but not the exact same way coz my external DVD rom didnt read my retail SL dvd and i didnt have a mac or access to a hackintosh so what i did is a long process but it works. In a windows machine i extracted (ripped) the install dvd using clone cd and saved it as OSX.iso.

Then with transmac i formatted a 16gig USB thumb drive with this iso image. now i have SL on the USB.

Then i connected the usb to the laptop and booted with ##### cd( using external dvd) , ##### showed the usb as MAC oS install dvd and from there i continued....

for me i connected DVD rom to USB3 and mouse on other USB and USB thumb drive in the third usb port.

Interesting. I will have to try that...I didn't run my external USB DVD off of USB3 since I assumed there would be more compatibility issues on the Renesas USB3 controller than the Intel USB2 controller.

I didn't go through the long Windows-based process, but hopefully my Mac-based process should work equally well.

Didn't work for me. Which ##### did you use and which BIOS do you have installed??

OK, here's what worked for me: (I may have made my life more difficult by using the latest BIOS 1.05: I could never successfully boot the second disk/USB media)

1. Switch to iGPU only mode in BIOS (Optimus is only supported in Win7 and in Linux via Ironhide, silly)

2. Swap out crappy Atheros bgn card for a AR928x or Broadcom 9432b (Bluetooth is not on the same PCB with the WIFI card as I had thought)

3. Use another Mac or Hac to restore the SnowLeo 10.6.3 (the $30 copy you purchased ages ago) DVD/image to a partition on your drive

4. Boot that installer partition with the latest ##### (non-Legacy, 10.6 only; I booted from the blue USB3 port and put the power USB connector with the skinnier cable in the adjacent USB2 port)

5. Install SnowLeo to a different partition

6. Boot the newly installed partition with #####, and install PS2Controller, NullCPUPM, PM states, and FakeSMC via ##### (npci and PCIRootUID fixes not needed with latest version, build 1394)

7. Set up the app store and download Lion

8. Run xMove with a new small partition that you create

9. Boot the installer partition with rBoot LE

10. Clean install Lion on your SnowLeo partition (that was just for practice, right?!)

11. Boot the new Lion install with rBoot LE

12. Use the appropriate version of ##### to configure all of the features you had previously in SL, including GraphicsEnabler for Intel 3000

12b. Upgrade to the latest version of Chameleon 2.1 with Chameleon Wizard (I like to do it to partition and bootfile)

13. Install the ethernet driver (AttansicL1C kext) in S/L/E

14. Use Kext Utility (Lion version) to rebuild your caches, repair permissions, and update to 10.7.2, then enable TRIM for your SSD via Terminal

15. Use Gparted on another laptop to copy you original Acer/Win7 install to the Windows partition on your brand-spanking new SSD (mine is a Crucial M4, but I recommend a Vertex 3 with FW 15 if you think the M4 is dated)

16. Run gptsync from the same Linux install you used Gparted from

17. Repair the Win7 bootloader with the Win7 installer booter DVD by running it multiple times and doing bootrec /fixmbr and bootrec /fixboot

18. Boot into Windows, verify that TRIM is working, and install EasyBCD so that you can access all of your OSes from the Win7 bootloader; use diskpart to mark your Win7 partition active if you want to use the Win7 bootloader

19. Install Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot without a swap partition and install the bootloader to the partition, not the disk, despite any warnings you see

20. Run gptsync again (you shouldn't have to reinstall the GRUB/Linux bootloader unless you add a storage partition at this point and the partitions are re-ordered)

21. Mark your Win7 partition active again and reinstall the Win7 bootloaders if you must; then boot into Windows and add the Ubu install into your EasyBCD config

22. Enjoy!

Other notes:

This is mostly time-intensive stuff I am contemplating:

1. Removing the heatsink/fan to address thermal issues with a little Arctic Silver 4 thermal paste

2. Attempt to replace the low-res 1280x768 LCD with the similarly-sized 1600x900 panel from the Asus UX31

3. Attempt to solder on a push-push type SIM-card slot and MiniPCI-E bracket to add an internal 3G modem (perhaps not worth voiding my warranty; I did try to get a European version with the slot, but that was an epic fail)

4. Fix brightness control/Fn keys and the RTC error with a DSDT patch

5. Figure out an audio solution better than VoodooHDA

6. Go outside and get a life :-D

Hello

I have Acer 4830t with probably the same spec like 3830t and I am running osx Lion 10.7.2 with working wifi.

I am missing working brightness control the most.

Also not working bluetooth, sleep, usb 3.0 and ethernet(not so important for me).

At the end very nicely working hackintosh laptop.

Wifi card and kext from the first post. I installed iATKOS L1 with ext. cd drive and connected ext. hard drive or usb stick just to trick an osx.(iatkos L1 is otherwise installed on internal drive). iATKOS L1 installed with PS/2 option only. After installation I booted with rboot-LE and -x (need to connect ext keyboard once) and after start protocol used #####: #####,vodoohda 0.2.72,pci configuration fix, use kernelcache, macbookpro 8.1. At the end I installed wifi kext from the first post. After update to 10.7.2 I reinstalled wifi kext. I hope I did not forget something.

This instructions are when we are using ##### 4.0.3. With ##### 4.1.0 we do not need to check pci configuration fix and kernelcache. After audio installation maybe there will be panic on restart. Boot again in Lion, put something in usb then restart and it should be ok. Any question ask.

Thanks to skyfox for all his works.

Uhhh I am tired. After two weeks of working lion with working wifi I decided to reinstall lion just to see how this is going. And you guess what, I can not get wifi to work any more. I am trying now for 3 days different combinations but nothing helps. I even rolled back bios (which I updated in beetween). Nothing helps. I have enough. I am searching for usb wifi solution or for another half mini pci express card. Someone knows for OOB working card?

It looks like this tread is almost dead. Anyway I have sleep, ethernet and brightness control working too. The only thing not working is a card reader I think.

How did you do? Can you explain which version u used and what kexts you chose and so on.

I still check this every morning, IF someone has posted any good idea of how to install mac os x on this acer laptop.

I have so much problems during installing to mac os x.

BTW: I'm new here :(

Hi Simphony,

I have the acer 3830T and followed your recommendations and ended with successful installation of 10.7.2.

Can you please tell me how did you achieve the following:

- Luminosity control

- Sleep (mine only goes to sleep if the power adapter is not plugged otherwise it will wake up instantly)

- Connect directly to a preconfigured wifi network since I need to do it manually at each boot

Can you please tell me as well if you had any luck with the following:

- Bluetooth

- usb 3.0

- 10.7.3 since I didn't succeed so far using multiple approaches.

many thanks!!

Hello again!

I've been off with this hackintosh for a while, but got so inspired to buy a mac, i was like, well, i can atleast try one more try.

soo, ive installed 10.6.3, and it works ok. I've no audio, wifi or the right resolution. But when i update to 10.6.8, it stops after i while, and get the error saying i have to hold down power button. How can i get 10.6.8, when this is happening? Is there a possible way to get wifi, audio without using 10.6.8? I mean, i can live with an old system, if the audio and wifi works.

Thansk in advance!

Oscar
