Hello everybody! This is my first ever tutorial on the forum and I hope everybody enjoys it!

What you will need:

Computer running OS X

Minimum 8GB Flash Drive

Access to the internet

Time

G74SX Kit: G74SX.zip

Pre-Installation

(Assuming that you have 10.6.8 already installed, if not do so or access another mac)

Follow this guide to make a bootable Lion flash drive:

http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=256729

DONT USE THE CHAMELEON IN THE GUIDE! Instead use

http://www.kexts.com/view/1820_[pkg]_chameleon_2.1_r1518.html

or the chameleon wizard in the G74SX Kit

Installation:

1. Plug in the Lion flash drive and turn on the laptop

2. Hit escape when the Asus logo shows and select your flash drive

3. Choose your installation in the chameleon loader

4. Install

5. Boot into the chameleon loader again but this time select your Lion installation

Post-Installation:

1. Download the G74SX kit

2. Using the kext loader, install all the kexts in the package into System/Library/Extentions

3. Repair the permissions of S/L/E (may take quite a while)

4. Copy the "Extra" folder from the kit into the root of the installation drive and Reboot into chameleon and boot Lion again.

5. Go to System/Library/Extensions/

6. Open up a terminal window and type

sudo su

Enter your password when asked then type

"nano" (without the ") and drag NVDAGF100Hal.kext into the terminal window

7. A text editor inside the terminal window should appear. Insert

"0x125110de&0xffe0ffff"

(without ") below

0x06c010de&0xffe0ffff
0x0dc010de&0xffc0ffff
0x0e2010de&0xffe0ffff
0x0ee010de&0xffe0ffff
0x0f0010de&0xffc0ffff
0x104010de&0xffc0ffff
0x124010de&0xffc0ffff

Press ctrl + x to save

8. Install the latest Cuda drivers from:

http://developer.download.nvidia.com/compute/cuda/4_0/drivers/devdriver_4.0.50_macos.dmg

9. Reboot into chameleon and boot with these flags: GraphicsEnabler=Yes GraphicsMode=1600x900x32

This will enable graphics acceleration and increase the resolution.

Other Thoughts:

Everything works but the SD card reader! If you have a G73SX-BBK7 Best Buy edition like me, the WIFI will not work either because there is no kext for the Intel Centrino -N Wifi and WiMax network card. If you have any other model, you'll be fine! I couldn't get the Chameleon.org.boot.plist to work properly (caused kernel panics) so I have to type in a flag every time. It might work for you.

I bought a G74SX-A1 from COmpUSA and installed Lion had no issues what so ever. I returned it because my Job decided to buy me one instead from CDW.

I kept the hard drive because it was mine. Now when I try to boot, I get this message. STILL WAITING FOR ROOT DEVICE.

This makes no sense at all? What Bios Version are you on now? I was on 201 but there is now a 202 release and tried that with the same problem.

That message means that its not able to boot the Sata drive? Its set to AHCI in the Bios. Do you have UEFI disabled? Also under Intel ® AT Configurations I have both items disabled in there.

I just cannot figure out what the heck is going on. I even installed Lion fresh from a USB flash drive to the 2nd 750GB drive and that one has the same issue.

It it possible Asus has done something to the Bios so that it will not boot the drive if it detects any other bootloader other than Windows?

I keep scratching my head on this one.

Maybe it was because I installed Chameleon on the EFI partition before. I will try and reinstall it that way to see if that makes a difference or not.

If not then ASus has done something to the Bios on this build. It took CDW 30 days to get one for me they were on backorder so who knows what Asus did?

EDITED 9-28-11

I was correct. In order for the drive to be recognized I had to create a chameleon on the EFI partition but that was not enough I have to have to Boot file on the root of the drive. It would not boot if I had the boot file in the EFI partition. Same with Extra folder had to be in the root of the drive not the EFI

This is the weirdest thing that has happened to me in a while.

What is the purpose of the AppleACPIPlatform.kext and IOPCIFamily.kext I don't seem to need them.

[sOLVED] EDITED 12-2-11

This problem is actually due to the newer hard drives incorporating the new Advanced Partition Scheme 512E. The fix is to install chameleon to the EFI and I think I was able to move the Extra folder to the root (from terminal window cd to /) of the drive but the boot file has to be in the EFI for now until Chameleon supports these newer hard drives.

Hi,

nice procedure, it works like a charm.

A few supplementary hints :

Boot from hard drive :

- Delete AppleHDA.kext from S/L/E

- Install Chameleon r1518 on your hard drive.

- Add GraphicsEnabler option to yout boot.plist

AppleHDA conflicts with the voodoo hda version and has to be removed.

If anyone manages to change screen brightness with keyboard, please tell me how.

agentdomo, where did you get the dsdt.aml file? Did you create it yourself? Did you perform edits, and if so, to what sections? I have a G74SX, and wish to edit mine, but I'm not 100% certain which fixes to apply, and where to get them.

Also, I'm a bit confused about the resolution, the G74 should have a native res of 1900x1080 instead of 1600x900, and I didn't have to edit the NVDAGF100Hal.kext. Were you able to get full resolution before the edit? Is the edit only required for full acceleration and not for resolution?

Lastly, did you use a special kext for the Sentelic touchpad? I've found that using the voodoo kexts for the ps2 port and touchpad make it functional, but it doesn't have some of the extra features like gestures or disable the touchpad while I'm typing. Makes it difficult to not have accidental repostions when you type... :)

Thanks for the tutorial!

How I can install chameleon into HD? Because I had to use the Lion installation Pendrive to boot into chameleon all the time :S

Sorry for bad english :(

See my post above yours. Are not able to boot the drive after you install Chameleon? See if you get the same message I got GPT test then error. If so then get the latest Chameleon installer or Chameleon Wizard and install Chameleon into the EFI.

You can either leave the Extra folder in there or move it out into the root of the drive where the kernel is.

I am trying to do this thing on my G74-BBK9. I went through the steps to set up the flash drive and bios and for some reason I still can't get my flash drive to boot. Any ideas on what this stupid newbie is doing wrong?

Andrea_D , I normally do not answer to PM's unless they are from admin or moderators or someone I already know sorry. Just search you will find out how.

Has anyone tried to install ML golden Preview on the G74? There is some new thing now that besides a DSDT we need to have a modified ssdt table and dropSSDT=yes and no p/c states in the CABP?

Also we need speedstepper to mod our AIPM which I have been doing since 10.7.

Anhow we will need an updated tutorial for G74sx

I did manage to get this to work in VM just fine. If the WiFi doesn't work and a kext doesn't exist i will just wait a bit...The VMWare version with updated graphics only drawback is "almost" full screen, but i find when i am using it i don't notice at all.

A new update.. I am just getting familiarized with OSX. I did find that I can change the Resolution after i install VMsvga2 without any problems. I just didn't know where the settings where to change my desktop resolution....done now though. Runs just like native, until I attempt to run something in High Resolution. Not a big deal really, I can keep things in smaller windows on this 1920x1080 space.
