Are the mysterious hangs killing my OS drive?

I have been running 10.5.8 (upgraded from 10.5.6) on a GA-EP45-UD3R / Q9550 using the iPC OSx86 10.5.6 Universal PPF5 (Final).iso to run Logic.

Everything has worked fine, however I have been plagued by mysterious hangs which give me the eternal rainbow wheel and although infrequent can occur at anytime, whether working or resuming from idle and in any application.

I have tried disabling network and other background processes and have tried searching for clues in logs and the activity monitor, but with no luck. These hangs are irritating but I can live with them, the thing that grates is that eventually, rebooting from one of these hangs will do something bad to the sectors on the OS drive, meaning i have to start from scratch with a new HD.

Can anyone recognise this problem and give me some advice? TIA!
