How can I tell if I am running on 64 or 32 bit version of lion if I click on activity monitor it shows all my programs at 64 bit, but if I go to terminal mode and type in uname -a it shows I-386 meaning 32 bit? I have using a desk top computer with a Asus PQ5 motherboard with 8 gigs of ram

It's not important, it doesn't work the same way as in Windows.

OS X is a 32/64-bit hybrid. Just like on a real Mac, as long as your CPU has the EM64T instruction set, you can run 64-bit apps and access up to 32GB RAM even if you're running in 32-bit kernel and drivers mode.

Apple > About This Mac > More Info > System Report > Click on Software > 64-bit Kernel and Extensions: Yes or no

No but like Moderator said it is a Hybrid what you are looking at what is it booting up in not what the application are running in, do this go to Apple/About this Mac/More Info/Software/Applications and to the right you will see 64-bit click on one that is 64 bit and look at the bottom of the screen and you will see it is running off the 64-Bit.

Unlike the windows 64 bit software everything is running 64 so if you install a 32 bit application it will NOT WORK. We have the best in both worlds can load a 32 bit program and run it with no problem.

I am surprise to see the version of Photo shop C5 I have is running in 32 bit, but VLC A FREE program is running is 64 go figure.

Hi honored ice-cream lover mod :pirate2: (and whoever else feels addressed) !

I am wondering if I would gain full 64 bit support by just swapping the Core Duo in my Toshi's PGA socket-M, Micro-FCBGA (FCPGA6 - link to detailed specs below) with a socket-compatible Core 2 Duo. Some chipsets are not 64 bit compatible, see here, but mine (Intel 945PM) is.

Thanks,

Bugs

UPDATE1: P100 = Europe & Canada, P105 = rest of the world. The Toshi Satellite P105-S9337, also with the Intel 945PM chipset (there it's called 'Mobile' as supposed to 'Express' on the product page for mine) and using the same BIOS as mine, has a Core 2 Duo 2GHz T7200 and IS 64 bit capable (as are the P105-S9722 and the P100-316).

UPDATE2: now look-a-there: here's somebody who successfully upgraded his Dell Inspiron E1505's Core Duo T2400 1.83GHz (same as mine) with the mobile Core 2 Duo T7200 2GHz which is used in at least three of the Toshiba Satellite P10x Laptops (making them 64 bit compatible). That guy is now running Window 64 very happily. I am getting more positive about this.

I have my P100 disassembled right now anyway, and a refurbished T7200 is only $70. The 1.83GHz has been running extremely silent and cool, so I don't have the slightest doubt that the 2x 170MHz more would cause any temp. prob.

Opinions :) ?

Wrong, best of both worlds for windows x64 too, 32 bit apps work fine on x64 windows! If the app installs a driver, eg a print driver then the driver has to be x64, on my hack mac, my usb audio interface only has mac 32bit drivers, it's up to the manufacturers to develop x64 drivers and often they don't, even for recent hw ;)

Now, Photoshop has been full x64 on windows since CS4, go figure

I didn't say you said there was no 64bit version, the facts are Photoshop has been 32 and 64 bit since CS4 on windows, that's a version before the 64 bit mac version and you did talk a load of old {censored} about 32 bit apps not running on windows 64 bit, please don't make stuff up.

:P interesting keyboard you got, with a '3 2 key' LOL, please post a photo .... you might want to add an 's' :)

I know this works on REAL Macs, even already with Snow Leopard. Are you sure this works on PCs? To work on non-Apple hardware it would need to be a feature of the kernel. Are you sure it's not a feature of a Mac's firmware?
