Really slow animations, effects and especially launchpad

First mackintosh (yay), installed Lion on an old(ish) Acer m670g with an nvidia 7300GS 265MB.

Got everything to work ,recognizes graphics card, runs high resolution (1900x1200), network and audio.

All in all things seem to work. Until i trigger fancy effects - change background image, click launchpad (argh)

Especially the launchpad is like playing civ1 on my trusty old IBM PS/2 with 640k ram (those were the days) - you can actually see the lines get drawn..

Is the card simply to old, or is there something i can do ? a better driver than the one currently used ?

I use Chameleon + GraphicsEnabler and actually had to delete geforce.kext + gefore7xxx.kext to boot with a recognized card, i suspect this could be the culprit.

I i put the 2 kext files back, i get error + no boot.

I i put graphicsenaber=no i get generic video card and low res.

Help me obi-wan .

GraphicsEnabler doesn't necessary mean you have QE/Cl acceleration. That's probably your issue. Download this:

http://is.gd/RD6Tal

and check what kind of video acceleration are you actually sporting.

He said he DOES need GraphicsEnabler,

and yes, i suspect your card might be old, as when i had 8400gs i had some kind of laggy graphics, But you also have 256 MB ram which is also very small ram to use, as OSX is GPU hungry, you can try benching you GPU to see how it handle things,

one more thing is, check your model identifier, and use the closest to your configurations (macpro3,1 or 2,1 i think is best for you) cause i remember with some cards when i changed model identifier to higher models graphics became real unresponsive.

also, i don't know how much it can help, but maybe kexts from older system may work for you

EDIT: i also came across this, i think this will be useful to you

Thx a lot both of you, i will try glview400 when i get to the machine later today.

I have a feeling that QE sort-of works - i have shadows, stupid chess game works (slowly)

I suspect Noam is right in that the card is simply to old.

I'll see if i can find a card that stays within my 100$ limit - everything else seems to work really well, so its still a lot cheaper, geekier and uglier than spending 2000$ in a Mac :)

if you not so fan for high graphics performance (hence don't play games that often) there are a to of Nvidia cards that will work you almost OOB only with graphicenabler=y (or any other injection method you prefer).

i have 220 GT which is middle to low card, i'm getting something like 21 FPS on Cinbench (but for me it's good, for my internet, music, and DAW use of my PC)

also a LOT of 9800 GT reported to be very good, and basically just do search for a card that meet your requirements, then do a quick search here and Google, this will bring the light

I have the exactly same issue with my ATI 4730 HD Sapphire graphics card. Everything works perfect, except for that annoying lag in Launchpad and when I try to play HD videos from my HDD.

I managed to install my network and audio card with two kexts so I think another one for the graphics card would work just fine. I tried with ATI4800Controller but had no success.

I've actually borrowed an nvidia gtx260 from a mate.

And i have the exact same experience.

Card found, everything seems fine until a do the launchpad or other shiny things - butt-slow.

Will start looking at it now.

edit:

glview only says Apple software renderer

it also says "Video memory 0 MB"

seems like the card not accelerated/ wrong injection

try different methods to enable graphics

I've now tried about 5 different forms of injection with the same result.

Video memory: 0 mb and no hardware acceleration (it seems)

I think ill just stuff the 7300gs inthere again and us my hackintosh without fancyness.

Just a small follow up and a HOORAY.

I tried about a million different things - every injector known to man.

I the end i trashed my hackintosh so i couldn't boot it anymore.

Which was a good thing.

I reinstalled following this:

http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=256729

Which was also what i originally used, HOWEVER, this time everything works with GraphicsEnabler=Yes.

I did 2 things differently.

I used the App Store lion instead of GM

I ran both Extra_Lion AND Extra_Lion_DP4.... - originally i only ran the latter.

I now have a Core2Duo Hac that runs better than any Mac i ever used :thumbsup_anim:

I have a feeling that it's the same problem others seem to have - with no QE/FI .

Either the leaked GM on common torrent sites is {censored} - or there's something in the Extra_Lion.pkg that we've all missed.

Oh and also - thanks for all the excellent advice and good pointers.

This forum is awsome.
