Install Lion on PC without USB?

Hi.

I've got a Mac and a PC. I want to install OS X Lion on my PC too. I have no 8GB Flash drive, so I cannot follow any of the guides on the internet, except for one, which i believe is sticked on this subforum. But it seems that I need an older version of Mac OSX installed on the same computer, is it possible without? As I said, I have a MacBook Pro running Lion, and a PC (see below for specs)

I am not the best at this, I have only installed Mac OSX on a PC once before. Any help is highly appreciated.

PC Specs:

- ASUS P8P67 Pro Motherboard

- nVidia GTX570 Video Card

- i5 2500k Quad-Core Processor

- 8GB 1600MHz DDR3 Corsair Vengeance RAM

- 120GB Vertex 3 SSD (Only for Windows and some games)

- 1TB Samsung SpinPoint F3 (Going to install Mac OSX here, most of my Windows programs already installed here)

Cheers,

Erik :)

Edit: I've got one 4GB USB stick and one 1GB USB stick - the Lion Installer image isnt over 4GB, is it?

Edit 2: Can I follow this guide (P8P67Pro and Non Pro Lion install usb for dummies..)? Prepare the USB on my Mac, boot from the USB on my PC, use the Disk Utility on the installer to create a partition, and then install?

I have found an image for a bootable Lion DVD, in one of the usual places.

Of course it boots without problems on a Mac, but I don't know if one of the many available boot CDs would make it boot on a pc.

I got myself an 8GB USB drive now, however ^Andy^'s guide didn't seem to work. I am going to try another one later.

Edit: I will however wait until it is possible to Hackintosh the official release of Lion (coming out today)

You can use your Mac to solve the problem. Like this:

  1. Connect PC HDD to your Mac (via USB/Firewire enclosure)
  2. Create Guide Partition Table (I suggest you to use a separate OS X dedicated HDD, therefore you might need to format one of your disks or buy an additional one)
  3. Create partitions layout (1. System 2. 10GB partition for install image 3. Optional data partition)
  4. Restore Lion image to 10GB install partition (via Disk Utility; you will use this partition as a replacement for installation media)
  5. Install Chameleon (with all additional components it needs; do not forget to configure the appropriate files such as org.chameleon.Boot.plist and SMBIOS.plist beforehand) to PC HDD, using Terminal. Do not use any Chameleon installer on your Mac!!! Only manual install, as you should specify the correct disk/partition for the boot loader to install to!
  6. Disconnect the PC HDD and install it back to PC. Try booting from it. If everything goes right, you should be able to install the OS

If it indeed went right and you were able to install OS X successfully, you should be able to boot the OS. If it doesn't boot, use your Mac to solve the issue(s).

It's only a basic draft list of how it could be done. Therefore you might need to search this forum thoroughly on each step you don't know how to accomplish.

Same setup here.

started from my MacBook Air with this guide on a regular 4 GB thumb drive http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=256729 until the "Post installation step" (where I choosed MacBook Pro for the Sandy Bridge) (don't forget to copy the "package folder" humm ? which is approx. 3,5 GB)

and then worked after that with ^Andy^'s files :)

worked straight !!

then followed THIS thread GTX 5xx kexts for the GTX 570

I just need to tweak here and there to get a 100 % working Lion, but I'm close :)

good luck

no need to mention that disconnecting all unecesary drives HELPS A LOT.. I struggled 48h because of this ... unplugged an old drive and it worked way better :)
