Appears to hang, but video going to external monitor?

Hi,

I got 10.6.3 installed ok by following Tony's ##### guide. I updated to 10.6.8 and ran ##### but I then cannot boot the 10.6.8 partition. It appears to corrupt the graphics and hang, but I still see the hard disk access light flashing occasionally.

I found this video:

where the guy has same problem as me exactly. He is able to remote desktop into his computer when this happens.

I wonder if maybe the video is being redirected to an external DVI/HDMI/VGA monitor that isn't really connected. I remember this was a problem with 10.4 on some dell laptops.

My hardware is an Asus K53e, Sandy Bridge i5 2410M, Intel 3000 Graphics.

I don't have an external monitor to test my theory with, but does anyone know of a way of telling the computer to use the internal monitor? On the 10.4 issue on Dell laptops the trick was to jumper a couple of pins on the VGA port with a paperclip.

Thanks
