NoMadMan
FR is keeping me from upgrading my media rig to Lion. Are there any alternatives that even come close? Ive tried Plex and I didnt really like it. I just need something simple and straight forward like FR. Buying an Apple TV isnt an option. NoMadMan
no need for other apps. the directions pinarek posted works painlessly. here is the directions translated to English. i didnt edit it: FrontRow with the lion good message for all who use a OSX as a MEDIACENTER. The FrontRow (10.6.7 ) also runs under lion, (current with 11A430e). In order to use FrontRow must only some files from the 10.6.7 in the OSX lion will be copied. Here, I give only the Quell-Pfade, the target are similarly in the Lion. /System/Library/CoreServices/FrontRow (The actual program) /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/BackRow.framework /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/iPhotoAccess.framework /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/iTunesAccess.framework (The iTunes.framework is probably already available, not overwrite) The front Row-Launcher (in the programs/FrontRow) you need not, here it is not working. 8( I have an alias instead of the Font Row-Programmes (the your in CoreServices you have stored) is created and placed these in the Programme-folder. FrontRow starts after double-clicking on the screen, I get it but only after 1x print of the ESC-key (so it is unfortunately also with the MacMedia in the living room under 10.6.7 ). I used the files from 10.6.8. I copied the FrontRow App from snow leopard to lion and executed the app without problems. the command+esc to start FR works fine also. Thank you for the heads up pinarek!!
NoMadMan
Pinarek I also find it appropriate to change the title and pointing the readers to your post.
NoMadMan
I did the same mod on my MBP and i can no longer execute FrontRow.app or use the command+esc keys to launch. Haven't really looked into why a hackintosh can execute FrontRow.app and not a real Apple machine. weird... oh, also my trusted Apple Remote isn't able to launch FR either. nyolc8
For me it worked first time, then exited from it, and now only the process starting, the app not appearing. :/ EDIT: Ok it's working but only with this method: double click on "Front Row.app" (which in the core services) and then press Esc once. And then it appear.
NoMadMan
that's ok Pinarek. the post was not intended directly to you. its for others who might be able to contribute to this thread. maybe there will be a better way to execute FR in the near future. NoMadMan
Working method on hackintosh and true apple machines. Files needed from Snow Leopard 10.6.8: 1. /System/Library/CoreServices/Front Row.app 2. /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/BackRow.framework 3. /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/iPhotoAccess.framework 4. /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/iTunesAccess.framework * if item exists on Lion. DO NOT overwrite * 5. /System/Library/LaunchAgents/com.apple.RemoteUI.plist * Download FrontRow 2.1.7 and use Pacifist to extract the file or copy the code below and name it as "com.apple.RemoteUI.plist", without quotes. <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple Computer//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd"> <plist version="1.0"> <dict> <key>Label</key> <string>com.apple.RemoteUI</string> <key>ProgramArguments</key> <array> <string>/System/Library/CoreServices/Front Row.app/Contents/MacOS/Front Row</string> </array> <key>MachServices</key> <dict> <key>com.apple.RemoteUI</key> <true/> </dict> </dict> </plist> 6. /Applications/Front Row.app 7. reboot or logout/login Working: Remote: Rowmote iPhone App with Rowmote Helper (Hackintosh) Keyboard: Front Row.app from Applications Folder, command+esc Another alternative, which I have not tested, is to download FrontRowUpdate2.1.7.dmg from Apple download and install it. But I can't guaranty that it will work since 2.1.7 didn't come with OS X 10.6. Post back if you got the alternative to work. I have to take credit for step 5. It's the file that's needed to launch FrontRow using the software remote and keyboard. Everything else is credited to the guys over at pinarek's German forum. Thats all folks! PS. Do not PM for files you need
nyolc8
@NoMadMan: Thank you, working perfectly now (don't have to press Esc anymore to start)

NoMadMan
^-- it shouldn't. i mixed osx86 and real mac by mistake. but Rowmote and other remote control apps (wifi) for frontrow and itunes will work
NoMadMan
FYI, New iTunes 10.4 update breaks Podcast and possibly other FrontRow plugins. Movies still work.
nyolc8
10.4 breaks Music as well. And this problem is present on Snow Leopard too, so I think it will be fixed by Apple.
NoMadMan
its not a Snow leopard or Lion issue but an iTunes issue. Everything worked under Snow leopard also i had no problems with FR under Lion. But as soon as I upgraded to the new iTunes, any plug-in that requires iTunes broke. Although I hope Apple with fix it, I doubt they will since FrontRow is dead to them. I've downgraded to iTunes 10.3 since its not too often I do anything productive with iTunes and I certainly don't need the new full screen feature. Having the ability to use FR with my remotes is a priority since I have plenty of podcasts and movies.
