Why does OSX installation statup speed vary?

I've been trying to get my OSX system up and running for a while now, and have probably started the installation at least 30 times. Sometimes however, the installation will almost fly up and running, while other times even starting up the installation takes several minutes.

I'm always installing from the same USB stick, so what could cause the startup speed to vary?
