GUIDE UPDATED 06/02/11! Now fully functioning OS X installation and also guide is easier to follow! To view the original guide please see post number 3 of this thread.

Hey there guys (and gals)!

I have finally got my Mac OS X installation fully functioning (now 100% working!) after almost 1 month of tinkering and hair pulling. Since this community has helped me quite a bit, I have decided to do a guide (tutorial) of sorts to help others that may have a system similar to mine. Below are my system specs, but I am going to assume this method should work for a system similar to mine.

System Specs:

Intel Core i7 2600K [HT On] [5.0GHz] [1.440V] || Corsair H50 [Push/Pull Exhaust] || Asus P8P67 Pro [bIOS 1606] || MSI R6870 Twin Frozr II [Crossfire] [1000MHz Core] [1200MHz Memory] || Patriot Sector 5 16GB (4x4GB) DDR3 1600 [1600MHz] [1.65V] [8-8-8-24-2T] || OCZ Vertex 2E 120GB [OS X], Western Digital Caviar Black 640GB [RAID0] [OS X Data], Western Digital Caviar Green 1TB [RAID1] [OS X Backup], Samsung SpinPoint F3 1TB [Windows 7], Western Digital Caviar Green 2TB [External Data] || LG Super Multi Blue GGC-H20L || Cooler Master Real Power Pro 1.25kW || Asus MK241H, Samsung SyncMaster 2232BW+ || Cooler Master Stacker 830 [Modded] || Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Titanium Fatal1ty Pro || Logitech Z-5500 || Sony MDR-V6 || Apple Magic Mouse, Apple Magic Trackpad, Logitech G700 || Razer Vespula || Apple Wireless Keyboard, Logitech G110 || Apple Mac OS X 10.6.7 Snow Leopard, Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate x64

Prerequisites:

Andy's Boot CD 4.0 [Download]

Retail Mac OS X 10.6.3 DVD (or earlier Snow Leopard DVD)

Mac OS X 10.6.7 Combo Update [Download]

[url="http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/279450-why-insanelymac-does-not-support-tonymacx86/"]#####[/url] (Only required if you don’t have P8P67 Pro, or if you need something from it)[latest version] {Download}

TRIM Supporter (only download if you have an SSD) [Download]

Antipop (only download if you hate the popping noises OS X makes when it turns off the sound) [Download]

Preliminary Steps:

1. Download everything in the prerequisites and burn it on a CD/DVD or Blu-ray or put it on an external hard drive or USB flash drive.

2. Burn Andy's Boot CD 4.0 onto a CD, DVD, or Blu-ray (I wouldn't waste a Blu-ray though .)

3. Turn off your computer.

Installation Steps:

1. Unplug every other drive from your system minus the DVD drive and the target installation hard drive. (You don't NEED to do this, but I would just so it won't screw up your Windows 7, or whatever, installation.)

2. Spam the delete key to get into the BIOS.

3. Using UEFI or BIOS change your boot order to DVD drive first, then your HDD second. (Note: at this step you can choose to revert everything to stock, but my installation went fine at my 5GHz overclock and with my 16GB RAM and both of my 6870s.)

4. Save UEFI or BIOS settings and reboot.

5. Pop in Andy's Boot CD and make sure your computer boots off of it.

6. Wait for the bootloader to finish loading.

7. Once your are at the Andy bootloader screen remove the Boot CD.

8. Pop in your retail OS X installation DVD.

9. Wait for the light on the drive to go out.

10. Press F5 (or spam it).

11. Once the Mac OS X Installation DVD appears navigate (using your arrow keys) to it and hit "Enter".

12. Wait for OS X to load.

13. Once you see the installation screen go to the top and hit "Utilities" and then "Disk Utility".

14. Format your HDD to Mac OS X Journaled (Extended) [partition it however you like].

15. Once that's done close "Disk Utility".

16. Continue the installation of OS X (this takes nearly 30 minutes depending on your hardware and what you are installing).

17. Eat popcorn, walk the dog, leave your computer, w/e but make sure to check back every so often.

18. Once the installation finishes and it asks you to reboot remove the OS X installation DVD and insert Andy's Boot CD again.

19. Reboot.

20. Let it boot off the Boot CD again and select your OS X drive (your hard drive) once the bootloader appears.

21. Finish the installation (we’re almost there!).

Post-Installation Steps:

1. Log in into your newly installed Hackintosh!

2. Move all of the files downloaded in the prerequisites onto your desktop.

3. Run the 10.6.7 combo update and then reboot by booting from the Boot CD again.

4. Run Andy's P8P67 Pro Package (it is on the Andy's Boot CD) [only use the ATI6000 package if you have a supported ATI 6000 graphics card, otherwise use the other package].

5. Get this SleepEnabler.kext from here (http://www.kexts.com/view/1057-sleepena ... 0.7.1.html).

6. Put it in Extra/Extensions folder on your root drive.

7. Run Kext Utility to repair permissions (Kext Utility is on Andy’s Boot CD) and edit your com.apple.Boot.plist to add “pmVersion=23” string (without quotes) to the “Kernal Flags” key (my bootloader as an example is listed below).

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">
<plist version="1.0">
<dict>
 <key>Kernel</key>
 <string>mach_kernel</string>
 <key>Kernel Flags</key>
 <string>arch=x86_64 pmVersion=23</string>
 <key>GraphicsEnabler</key>
 <string>Yes</string>
 <key>Timeout</key>
 <string>5</string>
 <key>Legacy Logo</key>
 <string>Yes</string>
 <key>UseKernelCache</key>
 <string>Yes</string>
 <key>UseMemDetect</key>
 <string>Yes</string>
</dict>
</plist>

8. SKIP THIS STEP! It is no longer needed because the DSDT.aml is now automatically inserted via Andy's package. Put the DSDT.aml (it’s attached on this post) into Extra/Extensions folder on your root drive.

9. If you have an SSD run TRIM Supporter.

10. If you hate the popping noises that OS X makes when it turns off the sound run antipop.

11. Reboot from your hard drive by removing the Boot CD.

12. Everything should be working now (eSATA, ethernet, USB 3, SATA 3, bluetooth, sleep, wake from sleep, etc.)!

13. From here on out if your system is working and you’re happy with it then you’re done and can close this guide. Otherwise, keep going!

Cleaning Up:

1. After the reboot hopefully everything is working. Check your About This Mac to check that all of your hardware is recognized.

2. Try running DVD Player.

3. Try running GeekBench.

4. Try running Cinebench.

5. Try running other OpenGL games.

If everything works then you are golden! Otherwise, check the troubleshooting section below!

Troubleshooting:

Graphics:

Set GraphicsEnabler=Yes in your com.apple.Boot.plist to get pull graphical acceleration via Chimera (or Chameleon). To get DVD Player and Geekbench working make sure to set a framebuffer (eg. AtiConfig=Duckweed).

Note: Duckweed is the framebuffer that worked for me (and others, apparently), but if it does not work for your try others (listed below).

List of possible framebuffers:

Pithecia
Bulrushes
Cattail
Hydrilla
Duckweed
Fanwort
Elodea
Kudzu
Gibba
Lotus
Ipomoea

Overlocking:

You CAN overclock, but you need to do a few things first. Make sure to disable EIST (Intel Enhanced SpeedStep Technology) in BIOS. Then you can overclock via Turbo or base multiplier (I got my chip to 5GHz with this, but I run it at 4.2GHz for 24/7 use). My Geekbench and Cinebench scores are listed below. NOTE: Overclocking can be potential hazardous so do it at your own risk.

Here are my Cinebench and Geekbench scores with a failed 4.2GHz overclock (ie. EIST is still enabled in BIOS):

Here are my updated Cinebench and Geekbench scores running a 4.2GHz overclock:

Dual booting:

If you want to dual boot OS X with another OS (ie. Windows 7, Ubuntu, etc.) then what I would recommend is to install the other OS on a SEPARATE hard drive. You can install it on a separate partition, but frankly it is safer on a whole separate drive. Once you finish installing OS X just install the other OS on the other drive. Then boot off your OS X drive and select your desired OS via Chimera or Chameleon.

[url="http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/279450-why-insanelymac-does-not-support-tonymacx86/"]#####[/url]:

[url="http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/279450-why-insanelymac-does-not-support-tonymacx86/"]#####[/url] is not necessary if you have a P8P67 Pro board since everything is in the Andy package. If you have a Deluxe or Vanilla board (or another P67/Z68) board then you might need to use [url="http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/279450-why-insanelymac-does-not-support-tonymacx86/"]#####[/url] to get some of your stuff working. Otherwise, everything should be golden!

Conclusion:

Well ladies and gentlemen that is all there is to it! Frankly, I think installing OS X on a PC is quite easy and more fun then installing Windows 7 and at the end of the day I use both Windows 7 and OS X for different purposes, so frankly all the arguing about which is better is pointless and since I built my own computer I get the best of both worlds :D

If you have any questions/comments/suggestions/or whatever then please post in this thread or PM me and I'll be more then glad to address it!

Oh, PS and BTW...Taylor Swift inspired me to take the daunting task of figuring out how to install OS X and actually installing it and getting it to work all the way to writing this guide. Don't ask me why or how...she just did. I <3 her and Taylor Swift FTW :D;)

Thank you man this is the best guide ever. I have a question for you after we install that are we still boot everytime from CD or can we make boot without CD?

You do not need the CD after installing the Chimera (or Chameleon) bootloader (which is done when installing Andy's package). The bootloader is installed on the HDD and you can boot without the CD/DVD in the drive.

Hi, I did build some installer packages for the P8P67 board (non Pro version) however as I don't own one of these boards myself I was unable to test them.

If anybody would like to give them a try the links are below..

P8P67 Installer.zip

P8P67 ATI6000 Installer.zip

Assuming these packages work you could use them instead of the Pro packages contained on the bootcd.

6950 is not supported under OS X. You need a new graphics card.

^Andy^ I have a P8P67 plain board. What do the installer packages have different than your original ones? Is it just the ethernet driver or more thing?

Aznboy1993 is the SleepEnabler.kext only for making your computer go to sleep? If you do not install it do you have any sideeffect (KP or hang with black screen?)

Thanks guys for your great work!!!

Hello, this is my first post, but I've been reading these forums lately, I'm triyng to install SL on my pc:

Asus p8p67 EVO

Intel core i7-2600k

XFX HD5870 1GB

8GB Gskill ripjaws cl7 (But I have only 4gb plugged in while installing SL)

Plus a few hard drives, but I'm installing on a OCZ vertex 2, and I use to unplug all the others while installing osx

I followed this and another guide andy's posted, with pretty similar components.

I'm using andy's boot v4 and everything looks going fine. Problem is that once I install the 10.6.7 update, it looks like it can't reboot. Loading the apple white screen seems to take forever. Already tried "-v", "-x" options, but nothing to do. Any clues? Is my mainboard too different? It sounds pretty strange to me, since the chipset, the uefi and almost everything else are the same... If I don't remember wrong the only different is that the evo has got 4 sata3 and 2 lan, there shouldn't be any other difference... but I may be mistaken...

UPDATE:

I have SL 10.6.8 running thanks to your new boot cd!

I followed youre guide step but step with only a small difference, here's what I've done:

Boot with andy's boot v5

Installed osx sl 10.6.3 from a genuine retail DVD.

rebooted with andy's boot v5.

completed the installation, repaired permissions and run 10.6.8 combo update. Got KP almost at the end.

rebooted with andy's boot v5, no success selecting the osx drive. Then i rebooted, put the retail DV again and repaired permission from disk utility on the installation drive.

Rebooted with andy's boot v5, got to the desktop again, showing 10.6.8 :)

Installed the p8p67 (non pro) package, rebooted without andy's boot CD and got to the desktop quite smoothly!

Here's my specs:

Asus p8p67 EVO rev3

Intel i7 2600k

XFX HD 5870 1GB

OCZ Vertex 2 60GB

4x2GB (8GB total) G-Skill ripjaws cl7 1600mhz

Ah, I've installed it with all the 8GB of ram plus front case USB 3.0 (forgot to unplug both :D ), no problems at all :)

Now, the only problem is that I need a boot manager in order to boot and select the rest of the hard drives, an Intel x-25 80GB SSD in wich I have win7 installed, plus a WD caviar black 1TB for Data.

I also haven't got the audio and the LAN running, I'm gonna try with [url="http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/279450-why-insanelymac-does-not-support-tonymacx86/"]#####[/url]. I'll update later!

Thanks for this great work, Andy! I really love you, mate! :D

Why not use EasyBCD2 on your windows 7 drive to add a boot entry for os x and set the windows 7 drive as the first bootable drive in your bios? that way you can use the windows 7 bootloader to select the os? (that's how I have mine set up).

I'll give it a try very soon, thanks!

UPDATE, everything seems working perfectly now, I switched the ethernet cable into the other LAN controller and the audio is working perfectly after a permissions repairing ad a reboot :D

Thanks again for the wonderful job, Andy!

P.S.

Is there a way to manually set the GPU fan speed? XFX HD 5870, thanks in advance!

Andy, sorry to bother you again, but I've tried adding a boot entry for OS X, set win7 ssd as the first boot in the bios. Now, when I boot I see the menu with the 2 OS, but while win7 boots perfectly, OS X doesn't. It opens a third hdd in wich I use to store data, no OS installed on it. What am i doing wrong?

Ah try this - temporarily disconnect or disable the third hdd, boot windows, delete the boot entry from easybcd for os x, recreate it, reboot and make sure it works and then reenable the third drive and see if it still works.

EasyBCD auto detects the drive and it looks like it got it wrong so you may be able to trick it via the above method!

EDIT - Woohoo my 200th post (well nearer 300th but since my original account was deleted I had to start again! (annoying because I can't update the original post in the installation guide thread with the updated links or latest installation instructions).
