With the new Chameleon out and Update 3 of Lion OS X everything is working in my custom built Mac.

There is a need for an update on the instructions on how to install Lion OS X update 3. There are different directories but the philosophy is the same as the first developer edition so I will not dive into these details, they are trivial.

One word of advise, if you have Snow Leopard installed, install the new Chameleon and let Lion OS X get installed under its umbrella environment.

For instance in my case the installation started with full resolution (GTX 480) on my two monitors.

You need also to have ##### downloaded since the network card won't be recognized on Asus P6T.

Now if you have set AHCI for your hard disk configuration you will be able to install Lion OS X update 3.

When Lion OS X finishes with the introductory screen and log in you will have QE/CI out of the box on a GTX 480

In my case what I did is to run #####, I chose easy install, installed the network kexts and the definitions for a Mac Pro. Then I installed the new chameleon and I rebooted. Magic I had now Internet access. Then I fixed the OpenGL bundle according to Netkas to have OpenCL and I installed the new version of CUDA. Rebooted. Magic I had now OpenCL and CUDA for my machine. Then I installed AppleHDA for the specific chipset that P6T has rebooted and voila I had the onboard sound recognized, tested Skype for microphone and out sound at the rear of the case, the front panel is only for audio so plug there your speakers or if you have an optical enabled surround system it works also.

So by doing all this with Chameleon, #####, AppleHDA, P6T, GTX-480 I have a fully working and stable Lion OS X. Shutdown and reboot work perfectly. The only drawback with the new Chameleon is that it goes idle on boot for about a minute or two but then the system is revived and everything is working perfectly.

Hope to you success on your installation as I have. Well Custom build Macs are a pain and only for geeky people. If you are not find a person close to you that is or buy a Mac if you can afford it. I can't at this period so I am happy with this. For instance the system that I have in Apple terms costs around $3000 I am saving them for a Mac BookPro when it supports the AMD 6970M chip or better. Then it will be time for me to buy and afford it and actually use it for GPGPU in which I am becoming specialized. I believe that MacBook Pro will be a must for developers on Mac specializing in GPGPU and 3D as I am. The only PC Laptop which is worth transforming into a MacBook is a custom built Sager which has dual 6970M dual cards and it costs $3000, I find every other PC Laptop transformed into a MacBook as a waste of time not to say a joke for Professionals.

Some additional notes :

1)The Launchpad is buggy when you insert new applications it sometimes hides the icons.

2)Safari is also buggy it needs to reload many times so if you do something important like filling in a form or writing a long letter it will drive you mad if you need to refresh.

These are the only bugs I have seen in update 3

Also:

1) It will be nice if they insert the dot under the active application again

2) OpenCL info gives you a 0Hz clock info (for the GTX 480) which is trivial since it is the only thing you don't mind when programming since you actually know the clock speed from the card specs. Probably netkas missed to correct somewhere the OpenGL bundle or there is a need to alter also something else.

3) The nightly built of Little Snitch works wonderfully in Lion OS X, try it.

4) I was able to connect to Apple Mac Store (well this was not so wise but hey curiosity killed the cat as they say :-)

In July when Lion OS X comes out actually buy it, it costs $30 don't be cheap downloading it with P2P. My God it will be downloaded by all the planet they will make billions again...

With this I conclude, και σε άλλα με υγεία (as we say in Greece when we think about the economic crisis we have now...:-)

Cheers
