Introduction - Why I Love This Laptop (Skip If You Want

;) )

Hey Guys! I bought my laptop about a month ago from the Source which had this on sale for about 530 after tax and mail in rebate. I love this machine, it was cheap and it even ran Crysis 2 on DX10 at around 30FPS, this may not sound like a lot but it was certainly playable and I didn't have to feel the burn of my money spent on an extremely high end gaming machine. Perhaps in a few years I would be able to afford something better, but I don't count on making gaming a major hobby right now as I am a student. Gaming was just a bonus.

I have to give out some credits to some people out on another forum though. I would have never found out about this model, or other amazing deals if RFDs did not exist. RedFlagDeals is another forum community which dedicates itself to finding the best deals around in CANADA :headbang: (yes I am Canadian) and had posted this up around the time I was looking for a laptop to use. So FIRST creds go to RedFlagDeals which has such a friendly and helpful community.

Here is a link to the very post that I got my laptop from:

Check them out sometime if you live in Canada.

Hackintosh Requirements!

1. A working PC/Mac that can download files!

2. A 4GB or Higher USB Stick/External Hard Drive/Something To Transfer Files With

3. A USB Mouse

3.5. A USB keyboard is optional, but certainly helpful if you ever do screw up

4. A Legal Copy Of Snow Leopard (buy legal, it's only $30, not like Windows)

5. #####/Empire EFI/Booting Method Disc

Now this gets somewhat confusing. I love #####, but I find that it kernal panics more often then any other disc. ##### is always the latest to update, but by including so many other kexts this doesn't allow me to boot properly. I used an older version of ##### (i3/i5/i7 Kernal Support Version) whic worked fine becuase it didn't have any kexts which interfered with the graphics card. If oyu are going to use #####, use the Legacy Version or try booting with the regular version with GraphicsEnabler=No.

6. These Specific Files

ATI Lion 10.7 Kexts (obtainable after a quick google search ... I'm sure I'm not suppose to post them here)

##### (inside TonyMacX86's download section)

##### (again, inside the download section)

My Package of Essential Files - Wifi, Keyboard + Trackpad, Battery (links included and attached to post)

Snow Leopard Combo Update 10.6.7 (obtainable through Apple's website)

Windows 7 64 Bit (only if you want to dual boot!)

External Monitor (it doesn't have to be new, I used one that was about 5 years old and could only handle 1024 x 768)

SwitchResX (obtainable through the official website)

Hackintosh Steps

IF YOU DO NOT WANT A DUAL BOOT WITH WINDOWS 7, SKIP THESE STEPS

1. Insert Windows Disc. Boot into it through BIOS by pressing F12. If there is not F12 option available, use F2 and enable the option through the BIOS menu.

2. Use the Windows button/Alt/Fn/Crtl + F9 to F12 when the screen for language pops up to start Command Prompt

3. Next, type in the following commands:

diskpart

select disk 0

clean

convert gpt

create part efi size=200

create part primary size=160000 (or w/e you want for your first partition's size in MB)

create part primary size=160000 (or w/e you want for your second partition's size in MB)

**A NIFTY TOOL TO USE FOR BYTES, MEGABYTES, GIGABYTES AND LOTSOFBYTES CONVERSION!**

4. Now eject your Windows disc and insert your #####/Booting Media and boot into it.

5. Swap your disc with Mac OS X and press F5. Wait for a bit.

6. Now, boot into the Mac OS Disc by pressing "Enter".

7. Select your language, then enter Disc Utilities through the "Utilities" tab above. Format the second partition as Mac OS Journaled and name the partition whatever you like.

8. Exit Disc Utilities and then install Mac OS. This can take about 20 - 25 minutes, go make yourself a coffee or something.

9. Don't be afraid if the the screen says installation failed. This is typical for some boot discs/media.

10. Restart your computer and swap your Mac OS disc with your ##### disc.

11. When you get to the boot menu, boot into the new installed Mac drive.

12. Your trackpad is most likely not working. Plug in your USB mouse and your USB with the required files and set up your account. DO NOT PUT IN A PASSWORD YET!

13. Now, use the combo update for 10.6.7, DO NOT RESTART!

14. Open ##### once and go through the installer until you get to the actual selection of kexts and boot loaders. Close it. Keep repeating these steps until "Installer" crashes. If it doesn't after about 5 tries, wish yourself best of luck and continue on to the next step!

15. Open ##### and select:

-#####

-OSX86 Software >> ShowAllFiles

-Drivers and Bootloaders >> Kexts And Enablers >> Misc. >> VoodooPS2 Controller

16. Run the installation.

17. Use ShowAllFiles (located in your Applications folder in the dock) and then locate your Mac hard drive in Finder. Here you will find a black box icon with the name called "boot". Delete this and replace it with the one I provided you.

18. Restart your computer.

19. You will have a bootloader, but type in GraphicsEnabler=No when your selection box is over the Mac hard drive. Press enter to boot.

General Fixes And Graphics

20. Now that you have this drive as bootable, its time to get everything looking nice and running. Drag out all the kexts files I have included in my attached "Misc Folder" (except for VooDooPS2Controller) and the ATI Kexts (EXCEPT FOR THE x3000's) onto the desktop. Run #####.

21. Add:

<key>AtiConfig</key>
<string>Hoolock</string>

to com.boot.plist, located in you Mac hard drive folder under Extra.

22. Install SwitchResX.

23. Reboot

24. Now you should have a corrupted screen. DON'T PANIC! This is GOOD! This means that Mac detects your screen, is trying to input a signal to it, but the signal is too high res for the laptop to handle. Plug in your external monitor.

25. Your external monitor should be able to handle the res. If it says something like "No Signal", reboot Mac, but with the monitor plugged in.

26. Launch SwitchResX by clicking "System Utilities" (or that gear box for some newbs  ). Now, hit "Launch Daemon" and then go to the side tab that has a monitor on it. It might say "Unknown Display" or "VGA sometihngsomethingsomething". Select the current resolutions tab and select "1280 x 768, 60 HZ", this will get you a res with almost exactly what you want ON YOUR LAPTOP, but it will be cropped a bit.

27. Under the custom res tab, creat your own resolution. Your settings should be the same as mine. These settings were taken off some default one that didn't show up on SwitchResX, so it is sometimes buggy and will flicker. Tinkle with the settings a bit and it might work overall.

Exit confirm save and then reboot.

28. Go to SwitchResX again and then Launch Daemon. Now change your res to the one in which we made and VOILA! Mac OS working at full res.

29. Time to get trackpad working. Install the VooDooPS2 kext that I told you not to install with #####.

30. Restart and boot into Mac again. Now you should notice that your input devices aren't working. Plug in that trust old USB mouse and follow me.

31. Go to your Mac hard drive. Now navigate to:

System/Library/extension/VoodooPS2.kext

Right click it and left click "Show Package contents"

32. Navigate to:

Contents/Plugins

and delete the VooDooPS2Trackpad kext. This will force you're system to recognize your trackpad as a mouse. You won't get cool multitouch/scrolling features, but its better than having no trackpad at all. Reboot.

33. Delete the line:

<string>arch=i368</string>

in com.apple.boot.plist

34. Reboot into beautiful 64 bit mode (:

34. A. Install Windows on the empty partition. This will most likely make your Windows partition active, so using your boot media, boot into Mac and rerun ##### with any of the bootloaders. Make sure to replace the boot file with the one I provided.

Current Problems

Sleep is not working. I have tried using SleepEnabler.kext, but that doesn't work either. This laptop tends to become hot sometimes, a fix around would be to add

fn=3

which makes the fan run at 100%. This doesn't seem like the best solution as your fan can break from intense usage, but its what we have so far. If someone could compile a DSDT, I would be extremly grateful to that person.

ADDITIONAL NOTES

It seems that Gateway has created similar models to mines (i3 and 5650) which are going on sale right now. I believe this guide will most likely work the same on these laptops. The_marD, who has a similar laptop, has reported that his trackpad works with the VooDooPS2 kext and therefore is able to do all the fancy smancy stuff that I can't

The kexts I used are:

VooDooHda - 0.2.5.6

Highest version I found which could stop the annoying whine and enable microphone

VooDooPs2 Controller - Compiled by bcc9 for 64 bit

(Must be used with the AppleACPIPS2Nub.kext included)

http://forum.voodooprojects.org/index.php/topic,718.0.html

(EDITED TO INCLUDE AR9287/AR5B97 DEVICE ID)

IO82011Family.kext - 10.6.7 Macbook Pro Kexts, only working on the same kernel

http://www.kexts.com/view/1225-io80211fami...r5b97_wifi.html

ATI Lion 10.7 Kexts

(Some people debate whether or not to use the X3000 kexts, I used the ones included in the normal 10.6.7 combo update)

IOUSBFamily.kext (10.6.2 Rollback)

NullCPUPowerManagement.kext

Jmicron36xSATA.kext

Jmicron36xATA.kext

IOACHBlockStorageInjector.kext

FakeSMC.kext

EvOreBoot.kext

ElliottForceLegacyRTC.kext

VooDooBattery.kext
