Possible to make an OSX Install USB without having a Mac Handy?

Hey guys, I'm pretty stumped here.

There are tons of guides that state you can make a bootable OSX install USB in the most simplest way possible if you have a Mac handy. Pop the retail disc in, pop an 8GB usb in and click the restore tab, select the .iso and then select the usb and voilá!

But, I don't have access to a Mac already  and I don't have a CD drive in this computer ugh so my last choice is installing from a USB... I have a Cd drive on my desktop so I am trying desperately to find out a way to legally make a bootable Usb that I can install OSX from on my pc without a Cd drive... without having a Mac handy already. No one I know has a Mac...

Is there any way at all I can do this? Whether it's with Linux or something else.. It's supposed to be really easy with a Mac, easier than making one for Windows or Linux but I just don't know :(

Thanks a ton for absolutely any help.

Now I've got a new problem.. I cant make the USB bootable.. no matter what. After using Transmac I copy the iso over to the USB so the usb acts like a complete image.

I cant boot it with #####, NAWCOM or just by trying to boot from USB via Bios. Nothing allows me to see the USB stick. I've done it the right way, I've followed all the instructions and for some reason I just cant get it to boot.

I have no idea why ##### or NAWCOM or my BIOS cant see this USB stick as an install .iso... :)

There actually several methods of installation from an USB drive:

 1. using one big (say 8Gb or more) flash drive both to boot and install OS X (the drive containing both boot loader and OS X image)
 2. using two drives, one (say 256Mb) as boot drive (instead of boot cd) plus another one for the OS X image itself (or OS X install DVD)
 3. using one drive (say 256Mb) as a boot drive (instead of boot cd) plus an image of OS X install DVD restored to a separate partition on the hard drive (I use the above method for my notebook)

USB drive MUST have some sort of boot loader installed (Chameleon or such) with all related components (such as /Extra with extra extensions and so on).

In any case you should set the USB drive (with boot loader) as the first boot drive in BIOS (or select it from boot menu). The above USB drive (the partition with boot loader installed, to be precise) MUST have a BOOT flag set to it, or it COULD NOT BE used as bootable device.

Wow thanks again for that.

So that means if ##### is run from a CD that it wont even bother to look for USB drives and you cant install SL from the USB. But if you run ##### from a USB and you have another one (or the image on the same one, on a different partition) that it is possible for ##### to see the image and then allow you to install it like you have a disc in the drive.

This would be so much easier if the little store near my place sold what I needed..

Thankfully I have a huge stock of USB sticks and an Awesome 8GB Patriot Xporter XT that I put the install image on.

I'll search around for a guide on how to run ##### from a USB.

EDIT: Oh god.. do I need a Mac for this.. ugh. Is my luck really this bad? I've tried to get around not having a Mac before by starting a Mac via VMware but it's not supported and I'm back to square 1 if I need a Mac for this...

Yes. Exactly!

There is an option for you to have a distro (Kalyway or other; though I don't like distros, but its the easy way to begin) disk restored to the above 8Gb drive and install from it. Those you could have OS X in no time and could go to the next step - retail install. I mean, you can have a basic running system (it doesn't matter if it has full resolution working or LAN/WAN/sound). Then you could do whatever you need.

I gave up... nothing has troubled me more than this and it's cost me my working OS installation. I had my files backed up of course but this has cost me days out of my week and it's not working at all... Apple really has made it so hard for people to get this working.. without a having a Mac handy it's pretty much impossible.

If you don't have a disc and you need to run ##### on a usb you need to swim through an ocean of terminal commands via linux or a possess a mac... if you don't have either you cant. So then you have to have your disc handy and if you don't you're out of luck again.

If you don't have a disc image handy either because your sister is borrowing it a city away and you encounter problems making a clone dvd from an image then again you're out of options.

If you don't have a mac you'll have to fight wind and fury to try and make a Virtual Machine work which is near impossible in itself. Not only that but if you don't have a proper intel processor that supports hardware virtualisation (my other noob pc that I am using now) you have hit yet another roadblock... I think I'm going to write on my tech blog about how hard this is and I'm going to 'suggest' to others to not bother if you don't at least have a Mac handy if you don't have the Disc handy...

I really hope in the future that there is an easier solution for this kind of thing. That some super kext comes along and you can install like you would a normal OS. Software should be without boundary... I don't believe anyone deserves the right to put a patent on software... though I know the world disagrees with me.

Thanks a lot for sticking with me. I'm going to use iATKOS S3 it's the latest Distro that I have found. Kalyway seems really really outdated and I cant remember the names of the others. It seems that iATKOS was the last to be abandoned. I don't like distro's either but that's pretty much my last choice.

Thanks again for helping, the guys at Tonymac86x abandoned ship when I popped the question...

EDIT: Actually that's a thought.. install iATKOS and then use that to restore the Usb and... Hmm. Now I just have to find that guide that told me how to put ##### and the retail image on the same USB with a Mac handy...

If the flash drive is big enough use 2 partitions (#1 for #####, #2 for retail).

It's 8GB so yeah it's big enough. How would I go about putting both on the same USB while making them both visible and bootable? It's such a shame that a DVD version of ##### cant see a USB image of the retail disc... it would save so much trouble. It's a really horrible setback of Chameleon.

Still in the process of burning iATKOS to a disc to see if it will work so I can do this step.

Gave up ;) iATKOS crashes on boot. My bios is also really locked up, it's an Acer BIOS and it basically gives me 4 options lol. Did a few googles and all the answers I got were 'Disable DEP' and I don't have an option to do so.

I think it's time to hang up the towel on this one guys. Thanks a lot though. I'll maybe get onto running Mac OS X on VMWare on my 'i' Core processor on the computer I actually want it installed on. It has HW Accel so I can use it.

Thanks so much for your help!
