smorf
Hi Guys, my quest is to update an iPhone 3G to 4.2.1 with jailbreak and carrier unlock. It has baseband 04.26.08 and the actual Firmware is 3.0 (7A341). I googled now for a long time and tried a little, but it did not work out. I understood that it might be a good idea to preserve the baseband and unlock with tools like blackrain or similar, as other tools might use the iPad baseband 6.15... and this might not be a good idea. So I tried the way with snowbreeze, but I get stuck at restoring the custom made IPSW in iTunes. (Error 1600). Can anyone guide me a nice way to get this thing running an unlocked and jailbroken 4.2.1? I have a Mac and a PC, so I could go for every possible way. Thanks in advance!! smorf

Firstly, did you mean your iDevice is: 1) iPhone 3G or 2) iPhone 3GS If it is iPhone 3G, I sugguest you stay with the current iOS. Coz, 4.2.1 would really make it lag big time. Else, if it is iPhone 3GS, try using the updated version of Pwnage Tool to make acustom IPSW restore file. Probably you are making an IPSW file, which might be ending up as a corrupt or incomplete one. Only then, can you successfully restore it to your iDevice. Lastly, don't forget to use TinyUmbrella or edit /etc/hosts to redirect iTunes to verify package to saurik's servers. Only then, would iTunes be fooled into allowing the older IPSW to be restored. Thanks in advance!! smorf I have updated my iphone 3G with Redsn0w 0.9.6rc14 and an original 4.2.1 firmware from apple. You can only do this if you have an official carrier unlock in your country, if this is true you can proceed. Start redsn0w and choose cydia and deactivate, place your exotic SIM in your iphone and follow the instructions on the screen. after the jailbreak start iTunes, iTunes will ask to update. DO NOT UPDATE !! iTunes will then say it's unlocked your iPhone and you will have an unlocked and jailbroken 4.2.1 installation. This is the way i did it and it worked for me. good luck!
