10.6.8 on H57 Express Chipsets

UPDATE 000: 10.6.8 update went very well. Ran 10.6.8 Combo update, force quit installer. Ran 10.8 Legacy-Kernel installer. Restarted. No Sound -- put back original (rollback) AppleHDA.kext from original install -- all good!

 

UPDATE 001: It appears that Chimera now supports Intel HD Graphics 3000, and guess what this Dell has for integrated graphics? YUP... I will test this when I find the time, but amazing news - no kext edits, no EFI string - just Graphics Enabler in boot plist.

 

UPDATE 00: NETWORKING IS PARTIALLY BROKEN. All my NIC cards are giving only 50Kb/sec upload speed with OpenPS2Loader and VNC (FTP & SMB through XBMC on original XBOX is fine). Regular file sharing etc. with a WinXP machine is fine also. I am trying a 64bit only RTL8139 kext with my 8139C -- will report back soon!

8139C shows the same issues, indicating it may be a problem somewhere else in the System.

 

UPDATE 0: Some people are reporting a DVD spin-up at recurring intervals, which sounds quite distracting. I have posted Needed.zip HERE which contains all the tools I used to install, along with my /Extra folder. It contains the AHCI drivers I mention in the next sentence too! Please edit your Platform.kext with your UUID of your boot volume.

 

I can vaguely recall installing an AHCI driver from another Snow Leopard release (probably iAtkos s3), all I remember is that is supported the Intel Series 5 chipset. If you look through the kexts included, they have their own '5 series' section. This is probably what that second AppleIntelPIIXATA.kext is... (S/L/E or S/L/E/IOATAFamily). See above for link.

 

I am free of the disk spin-up issue, and in an attempt to help troubleshoot the situation, I am supplying some data (in screenshots) underneath. I am using stock DVD-RW that came with the system I have installed a Blu-Ray burner which works with Toast Titanium 11 + BDPlugin beautifully. Also note that I have removed the AHCI injector/s as they were not necessary for full support. Also included is the possible suspects, being JMicronATA, AppleIntelPIIXATA, and IOATAFamily kexts, these are copied directly from S/L/E. Of no great importance, I have also posted my PlatformUUID.kext, which I keep in S/L/E as well...

Three kexts which might fix SATA DVD spinup issues...

 

My PlatformUUID.kext -- edit this with your boot-UUID or risk DEATH!

 

My smbios.kext -- edit this to match your system specs.

 

Everything I Used!

 

 

UPDATE 1: Dual-booting with Windows 7 64-bit working. I needed to install AHCI drivers HERE(forced + silent) and edit the registry values as per HERE. I then needed to set Chameleon to ignore all other disks besides OSX default, and System Reserved - and renamed System Reserved disk to WIN7 in Chameleon PreferencePane.

 

UPDATE 2: I extracted and installed mach_kernel and System.kext from 10.6.7 Combo Update, ran Kext Utility, and booted with pmVersion=21 -- perfect with Stock 10.7.0 Kernel!!!.

 

 

IMPORTANT: GUID is the preferred partitioning method, and gives native HDD speed and full mutitasking/multithreading performance. MRB was tested, and is exactly 50% the speed of GUID, and is also laggy, and ridiculously unusable while multitasking - therefore USE GUID PARTITIONS!

 

ONLY TESTED ON CORE i3 INSPIRON - THIS *SHOULD* WORK ON OTHER H57 EXPRESS CHIPSETS AS WELL -- BE WARY OF DIFFERING INTEGRATED AUDIO/LAN CHIPSETS!

I just managed to get a 100% fully working Snow Leopard 10.6.7 install on my Dell Inspiron 580s (2.93GHz Core i3).

 

After four days of no sleep, and much experimentation, I have a (relatively) foolproof method of installation.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

THINGS YOU WILL NEED

 

Dell Inspiron 580s Core i3 (or Core i5) with Snow Leopard - Chameleon Graphics Enabler compatible ATI/NVIDIA PCIE card.

 

I would highly recommend upgrading the paltry 300W power supply, especially if you are running multiple HDDs and a decent graphics card. I updated to a Cooler Master 650W model so I could run my GeForce 9800 GT. It is also WAY QUIETER than the stock power supply.

 

an entire SATA HDD (faster is better) to put 10.6.6 onto. Dual boot untested, but installs to first partition nicely. Maybe keep extra partitions formatted as Free Space. Install Win/Linux/Mac in that order. No questions answered regarding dual-booting!

Patch and burn Hazard's 10.6.6i to DVD

Burn iAtkos S3 to DVD

Place AppleBCM5701Ethernet.kext.zip, BridgeHelper & [url="http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/279450-why-insanelymac-does-not-support-tonymacx86/"]#####[/url] onto CD/DVD or USB Stick.

 

Change your BIOS settings to AHCI, Suspend setting=S3, Restart after power failure=On !!!

 

restart

 

Change your startup drive to OSX SATA HDD

 

restart

 

Hit F12 to select startup drives - insert Hazard's 10.6.6i DVD - wait a few seconds - select CD/DVD - hit enter

 

When the boot splash arrives, hit F8 - type:

 

arch=i386 busratio=22 cpus=1 maxmem=2048 "Graphics Mode"="1024x768x32@60"

 

if you do not have a 2.93GHz Core i3, your busratio will be different - busratio is the multiplier that is used to get your final processor speed. ie: FSB (133) x busratio (22) = speed (2926 or 2.93GHz)

 

hit enter - wait 10 minutes until you reach the installer

 

Select your language, when the main installer window appears, select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.

 

Format your NEW SATA HDD as a Single Partition, using GUID.

 

Install Kernel, Chameleon RC5 with GraphicsEnabler & Restart Fix, VoodooHDA with Preferences Panel, and NTFS if you want write support for NTFS disks -- no fixes required at this point, as USB, AHCI, Network will be fixed later.

 

Restart

 

hit F8 - then type:

 

arch=i386 busratio=22

 

Set up Snow Leopard. You should have full QE/CI at this point!

 

Insert the media you made earlier, and copy BridgeHelper, [url="http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/279450-why-insanelymac-does-not-support-tonymacx86/"]#####[/url] and AppleBCM5701Ethernet.kext.zip to your Desktop.

 

Run [url="http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/279450-why-insanelymac-does-not-support-tonymacx86/"]#####[/url], and select and install [url="http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/279450-why-insanelymac-does-not-support-tonymacx86/"]#####[/url]. (fixes USB - sets 32bit start mode)

Manually install this Custom Kernel, from an old [url="http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/279450-why-insanelymac-does-not-support-tonymacx86/"]#####[/url]

 

Here is my Extra Folder in case it helps you. It contains a simple smbios.plist which got my RAM showing correctly. You may also wish to view my com.apple.Boot.plist.

 

Here is a PlatformUUID.kext that I am using - don't know if you need this, just edit the UUID value in Info.plist inside to be the same as your boot partition (find it by pressing "i" icon in Disk Utility) and throw it in System/Libray/Extensions, then forget it...

 

From this point on, you MUST RUN KEXT UTILITY after installing anything into /Sytem/Library/Extensions or /Extra directories! It's in your Applications folder

 

Copy edited AppleBCM5701Ethernet.kext (unzipped) to /System/Library/Extensions/IONetworkingFamily.kext/Contents/Plugins/ (replacing existing file).

 

Run Kext Utility

 

Restart

 

Run in Terminal:

 

sudo -s

 

(enter your password)

 

cp -R /mach_kernel /mach_beast

 

chmod -R 644 /mach_beast

 

chown -R root:wheel /mach_beast

 

reboot

 

hit F8 repeatedly when BIOS text disappears - you only have 1 second

 

type:

 

mach_beast arch=i386

 

hit enter

 

Now, in Terminal

Backup existing IntelHDA.kext (rollback), and the only thing not working after installing 10.8.0 legacy kernel is sound. Install backed up IntelHDA.kext with Kext Utility, restart -- and there you go!

 

Will try non-DSDT Lion at some point soon....

 

That is it, you should have perfect 10.6.7 running at full speed, with full Sleep/Restart/Shutdown, all 4 cores running (2 cores x 2 threads -- more on the i5). Core Image and Quartz Extreme, plus all resolutions and refresh rates, All sound inputs/outputs should be functioning, including HDMI/Digital Out. Tested most available software to be working fully. Use -force64 at Chameleon boot screen to try out 64bit OS and apps.

 

UPDATE: Working PERFECTLY in 64-bit all the time. Updated MacFuse to Tuxera version 2.1.9beta to get FUSE/TrueCrypt working

 

THINGS NOT WORKING

 

DVI->HDMI adaptor=Black Screen - WORKAROUND with vbios ROM injection from 8800GT -- see here. I believe this happens on real Mac's too... testing again tonight with new all-in-one DVI->HDMI cable!

 

THINGS UNTESTED

 

nothing - all working except esoteric networking upload issue, and DVI->HDMI adaptors.

I have been trying to get my Inspiron 580 running from a retail Snow Leopard install for the past three days. In the end I'm always left without sound or lan. I have wanted to get this running without using any downloaded distro, but as of today I'm officially fed up with this computer. I will begrudgingly download the Hazard distro and see how it goes.

 

Thanks for your hard work and for putting this guide together. I am looking forward to having a functional 580 Hackintosh by this afternoon. I'll be sure to post my results when I've finished.

I tried iAtkos S3 and also [url="http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/279450-why-insanelymac-does-not-support-tonymacx86/"]#####[/url]/MyHack + Retail DVD, all to no avail. I may have been trying those in ATA mode tho (silly me!). Make sure you patch the DVD with the provided ppf file -- there are good instructions on ppf-o-matic around the place. Hazard's install was by far the easiest, and the 10.6.7 update went surprisingly smoothly, except for the size of the download!

 

This is without a doubt, the easiest, and most compatible Hackintosh I have ever built. I have been running Cider and WineSkin ports on this system without a hitch.

 

I should warn you that IF YOU ARE DUAL BOOTING, after formatting your GUID HDD, you MUST BOOT INTO WINDOWS, and LET WINDOWS SEE THE NEW DRIVE!! If you do not do this, you will only get boot0/boot1 errors booting OSX86.

 

I am here to help, and supply any .plist's ot .kext's or /Extra contents you need (not that you need many).

 

Remember also, that you need an NVIDIA Snow Leopard supported card. There are some that just don't work under Snow Leopard (My DVI -> HDMI adapter doesn't work). Stuck using VGA at Full-HD res

 

Also heed what I say about the power supply.

Thanks for the reply, I've been having a little success and a little failure. I have followed the guide and successfully installed Hazard's 10.6.6i. Then I install BridgeHelper and upon reboot I have a kernel panic. So I start over...

 

Now my questions are:

Is BridgeHelper really necessary? My processor is an i5 650 (Clarkdale I believe, not Sandy Bridge).

What actual benefits does BridgeHelper provide for this architecture?

Why do we want to force the OS to 32bit?

Is there a way to take a step backwards when I've caused a kernel panic? Re-installing every time wastes a lot of time.

 

On the hardware side:

I intend on adding a secondary hard drive in the future and will definitely upgrade the power supply before doing so.

I have noticed that after installing VoodooHDA, the speakers make a loud pop at startup and shutdown. I don't know if this is normal or not.

I have an NVIDA GeForce 310 which is supported in Snow Leopard and appears to be fully functional. I'm using DVI output to 1920x1080 and all the fancy effects are working.

I have a Teac internal card reader with Bluetooth that I pulled from my Inspiron 530. The Bluetooth is working and I have a magic mouse paired and working with it. I haven't tried the card reader yet, but honestly that is of little concern to me at this point.

 

I haven't gone past the point of Installing BridgeHelper yet. I will most likely try again this evening.

First up, I used a dumped DSDT (from Chameleon preference pane) for quite a while. Then I dumped it completely, with no side effects, so I think it is entirely unnecessary.

My processor is a Core i3. It worked for me, I think the new version is 10.7 kernel, so may not be best using that version (especially on 10.6.x). I actually have to rebuild the kext cache (-f) after switching kernels, or it won't boot.

So little it probably isn't important. Some memory and busratio autodetection I think. I would stick with stock installed kernel (skip BridgeHelper permanently) if it works. You may need to add your busratio=xx line into your kernel flags tho...?!

 

For me, it stopped me having to type in busratio=22 each time, but this may have been fixed by [url="http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/279450-why-insanelymac-does-not-support-tonymacx86/"]#####[/url] anyways. Reinstall, and check About This Mac, and more info. See if the RAM and other speeds etc. are anywhere near accurate. Also, check if all cores/threads are registering. My computer is 100% Mac now, so I am loathe to change anything at this point.

 

Why do we want to force the OS to 32bit?

 

This is a personal preference. It works fine in 64bit, I have tested it. I only have 4GB RAM, and it runs super sweetly in 32bit, so why change it? I may see small improvements in multitasking/video-playback, but is that worth the added instability? Yes, it does crash more often in 64bit mode! At least half the applications on the system are 32bit Only!

Use my guide (which needs some work) with this section:

 

Run in Terminal:

Do this immediately after booting into a successful install, you will also want to copy /System/Library/Extensions/System.kext, (which is matched with this kernel) to somewhere safe. If ever you cannot boot into the desktop, you can try booting in single-user mode (-s) with mach_beast at the boot prompt (F8 at startup). You can always boot off the Hazard DVD, and use Terminal to copy backups into their correct spots, and reset their permissions. As it happens, I didn't have a single issue with my i3. I was typing arch=i386 and busratio=22 at ever boot tho

 

BTW: what was your Core i5 busratio value?

Mine does this too, a slight annoyance, but it does let you know that startup is nearly complete...

 

Also, there is native support for this sound chip, without need for VoodooHDA. I believe it is an ALC887 (not at the computer at the moment, so cannot check). The ALC88x family is well supported, with all analog/digital lines functional and complete. This may be able to be activated with an EFI string. I will look into this tonight.

It's pretty awesome, isn't it! I have a GeForce 9800GT 512MB PCIe, and it runs incredibly. The GeForce G310 that came with mine was faulty, and locked up the computer after a few minutes... any computer, any OS, even with new heatsink/fan! Also, if you do some research, you will see it is functionally IDENTICAL to the G210 -- the lowest entry-level card in the series. Anyways, I'm sure you will upgrade when you need extra graphical grunt.

I can confirm that the multi-card reader works (superbly) with SD-Cards up to Class 6 32GB, and also Memory Stick Pro Duo up to 8GB. I'm fairly sure everything on the front of the box should work!

 

Did you not receive a built-in card reader under a flap in the front? I must apologise if I haven't stated this already, but I am using the mini-tower 580 (580 MT?).

It's working now, though I do have a couple of small issues.

 

Although sleep is working, I lose Bluetooth upon waking. The option to wake from keyboard or mouse is grayed out. When the computer wakes, nothing attached to the Bluetooth works.

 

The DVD drive makes a strange noise every 5 minutes or so. It's almost like it's reading the disk, but there's nothing in the drive.

 

There's still the loud pop on boot up and shut down, but I can learn to live with that one I guess.

 

Did you not receive a built-in card reader under a flap in the front?

I did, but it didn't have the Bluetooth in it so I replaced it with the CAB-200 from my Inspiron 530.

 

BTW: what was your Core i5 busratio value?

I found a posting that had instructions on calculating your bus ratio.

Using that guide I found my bus ratio to be 24. When calculating the processor rate it comes up with 3.192 (3.2GHz).

 

As far as your guide goes, it worked for me. There were a few struggles and I'm sure there were a few things I missed that made me need to start over and do it again. One thing I didn't understand was what the instructions were for after installing the network card. I understand now that some of it is to make a backup of the mach_kernel for recovery purposes, but the rest doesn't make sense to me. If I were to make any suggestion, it would be to explain what is going on in the later parts. Otherwise great guide, thanks for the help.

Thanks You MacMeister! I have been wanting to take the plunge and make a Hackintosh for a while. When I came across your posts in Tonymac and Insanely Mac I decided to take the plunge and I bought a Inspiron 580 i5 yesterday. I know its going to take some work but I'm looking forward to it (for now at least ). I am hoping to revive my old Motu 324 PCI based recording studio that has been stuck on Tiger with an old MDD 1.24GHZ DP G4. If this works out it the next step will be to see if I can get my PCI card working! Again thanks for your time and sharing you knowledge!

I made a fairly sweeping statement for only a single install on a (nearly) stock Inspiron 580MT.

 

I have discovered that Safe Sleep (Hibernate) does not work on my box (although I never use it, and I disabled it with pmset).

 

I assume you mean that your options in the BIOS (wake with mouse/keyboard), which means that you did not have S3/STR selected in the BIOS power management settings (You probably have S1/POS). Once that is selected, you should be able to wake from Mouse or Keyboard!

 

You need to disable legacy USB (USB Mouse/Keyboard) support to get proper USB detection. This will then NOT ALLOW you to do many things, such as boot from USB stick, or enter kernel flags at startup (you cannot even break into the bootloader). If you need to make changes, break into the BIOS early, and set Legacy USB again, make your changes, then restart and disable it again.

 

I will take some digital photos of the BIOS, and post them with the guide. I also have some other screenshots to post. And I will record a movie to give an idea of speed/responsiveness == it is quite impressive.

 

So to summarise -- the only two things not working on my box are Hibernate and DVI->HDMI adaptor. The HDMI adaptor issue affects real Macs anyway. I shall be updating to a 4xx soon, so should not be an issue.

 

Another thing I discovered was a kernel panic after making changes to /Extra/com.apple.Boot.plist. You need to repair permissions, or alternatively type -f at the bootloader -- everything is fine thereafter. It happens quite regularly when switching from 32bit to 64bit startup (without the -f flag).

 

Keep me up to date pls...

 

PCI cards can be very finicky. I recently purchased a SATA PCI card, and a 4-port USB 2.0 card, and neither of them worked under Mac. They are based on well known VIA chipsets, so I may still do some research there.

 

MOTU are still around right? They have OSX support, so you might get lucky -- also, there may be some hacks by other users to get it working on 10.5/10.6

Also, I checked my kernel with uname -a, and it says it is a 10.6.0 kernel -- this was supplied by my version of BridgeHelper -- new version containes 10.7.x I believe. I cannot reboot into the OS without this BridgeHelper. Actually, I had almost given up trying a Snow Leopard install, when I found the BridgeHelper file by accident on my USB stick -- did a search on Google, and the rest is history.

Apologies, it seems that hibernate modes 1 & 3 are both working, although there is no sound on Wake! Also, there is an 8 second white screen before it resumes.

 

I will try other sound kexts to see if I can improve this.

 

Also, I am going to attempt to install new beta 32/64 bit MacFuse from Tuxera, to see if I can get 64-bit Truecrypt working (only app not to work in 64bit so far).

 

More news as it comes to hand.

A little research has lead me to find out the PCI structure no longer is supported in the 10.6 code for Motu, so it sounds like I will have to upgrade to a PCIe Motu 424 card. Regardless I'll still give it a try. From what it sounds like Snow Leopard might not register PCI at all as it was phased out in the early G5 days. Have you managed to get any of your PCI slots to work in your Inspiron 580 hackintosh?

There is now a 1080p movie capture of my Inspiron 580 Mac... Just to give you an idea of speed at the entry level (Note. new 1.5TB SATA HDD and old GeForce 9800GT 512MB installed -- so not stock standard).

PCI has worked right through Leopard, and into Snow Leopard. I have a few PCI cards that work great (some with drivers, some without -- eg. ANY RTL8139 PCI NIC cards work without drivers, some others have drivers supplied.

 

If you have a spare PCIe (I guess they mean the small 2x stubby one), then you should be OK, if they have OSX 10.5.8/10.6.x drivers. I have an old 2 port Si PCI Raid card, and it has drivers (not the exact ones, but they work).

So, your mileage may vary. There appears to be OSX drivers for 324/424 PCI cards on a quick Google search!!

PS. Realtex 8xx drivers included in [url="http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/279450-why-insanelymac-does-not-support-tonymacx86/"]#####[/url] work perfectly!!! choose all options, and only 888b card, and run System Utilities at the same time... DON'T FORGET TO TRASH VoodooHDA.kext and .prefpane FIRST!

Your settings for audio installation and the network driver that I would have never found otherwise have made this the perfect installation. I ran out and picked up a retail copy iLife 11 and everything there appears to be fully working as well.

 

Bluetooth still doesn't work upon wake, but I'm not too concerned about that.

I wouldn't worry too much about that. A supported (tiny) USB adaptor will fix all that... Some logitech mice come with a near invisible one...

I just downloaded some video into iMovie from a Flip HD camera, put together a simple video project and opened it in iDVD. The sound worked on both the theme and the movie content. Is the audio problem you're having within the program, or on the produced DVDs? I'm going to try to burn it to a DVD to make sure that's all working as well.

That's what prompted me to try again with the retail disk.

Here's what I did:

• Using your guide, setup my BIOS correctly with AHCI and power management to S3
  
• Downloaded [url="http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/279450-why-insanelymac-does-not-support-tonymacx86/"]#####[/url], [url="http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/279450-why-insanelymac-does-not-support-tonymacx86/"]#####[/url] and [url="http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/279450-why-insanelymac-does-not-support-tonymacx86/"]#####[/url] from tonymacx86.
  
• Downloaded SleepEnabler from kexts.com
  
• Downloaded the BCM5701 Ethernet kext from your guide (I can't thank you enough for this kext).
  
• Downloaded the 10.6.7 combo update from Apple.
  

I put all of the miscellaneous files on a flash drive and burned [url="http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/279450-why-insanelymac-does-not-support-tonymacx86/"]#####[/url] to a CD. Then proceeded to follow the basic [url="http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/279450-why-insanelymac-does-not-support-tonymacx86/"]#####[/url] guide.

• Boot from [url="http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/279450-why-insanelymac-does-not-support-tonymacx86/"]#####[/url], replace with OS X install disk, push F5, boot into the installer.
  
• Partition the disk with disk utility, single partition, GUID.
  
• Customize the install to remove additional languages, then begin installation.
  
• When prompted to reboot, put [url="http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/279450-why-insanelymac-does-not-support-tonymacx86/"]#####[/url] back in. Reboot and select the new installation.
  
• Run the combo update, but don't reboot.
  
• Run [url="http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/279450-why-insanelymac-does-not-support-tonymacx86/"]#####[/url] selecting: [url="http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/279450-why-insanelymac-does-not-support-tonymacx86/"]#####[/url]; System Utilities; ALC8xxHDA; ALC887/888b; AppleHDARollback; EvOreboot; NullCPUPowerManagement; and Chameleon Default Theme.
  
• Remove the [url="http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/279450-why-insanelymac-does-not-support-tonymacx86/"]#####[/url] disk and reboot.
  

Not sure if I needed all of the options I selected in [url="http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/279450-why-insanelymac-does-not-support-tonymacx86/"]#####[/url], but it's working with that configuration. In the steps ahead, I'm not sure if I need to run System Utilities in [url="http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/279450-why-insanelymac-does-not-support-tonymacx86/"]#####[/url] again but I do it anyway just to be safe.

• Place the SleepEnabler and AppleBCM5701Ethernet kexts on the desktop and run [url="http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/279450-why-insanelymac-does-not-support-tonymacx86/"]#####[/url]
  
• Rerun [url="http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/279450-why-insanelymac-does-not-support-tonymacx86/"]#####[/url] and select only System Utilities. Reboot
  
• Open com.apple.Boot.plist and add <string>busratio=24</string>
  
• Checked for Updates, installed and rebooted.
  

All done, everything rocks. I also have an update for NVIDIA from tonymacx86, but I haven't installed it and I'm not sure if I will. At this point it's all working so I installed iLife '11 from a retail disk and it went without a hitch. Now I'm going to go back through your guide and follow the details that you've added, including your BIOS settings and your Extra folder.

 

One last note: As I was writing this out I burned a disk from iDVD and can confirm that it's working as well.

I see, you are using the Apple kernel (my legacy kernel has sleep support built in). I also reinstalled latest iDVD and sound works a treat!

 

I can now state categorically that everything is working on my box (only thing I haven't checked is new sound drivers after Hibernation -- but I am almost certain that it will work. Tested Time Machine yesterday -- all good. I also removed (what I consider to be) troublesome PreferencePanes (Startup Disk, Apple Update, MyMac).

 

Also, TemperatureMonitor is working sweetly, with both core temps showing accurately.

 

I am currently using Chameleon's GraphicsEnabler option, but I had this working before with an EFI string (created on 10.5.8). I may reinstate this scheme, as it might improve Hibernation startup times (I guess it takes a while to read 4GB from memory anyways...)

 

I have full sleep support WITHOUT SleepEnabler kext... I assume you are now using Apple official kernel, so Sleep is now broken? is this correct?

64bit MacFUSE (this was a bit harder to find)

64bit iTunes

 

More than half the apps on my system are still 32bit, but they run fine in 64bit.

 

PS. My startup is very slow -- there is a timeout or stall somewhere in there. I may have to debug this a little, as I recorded the startup procedure on my digital camera, and it took longer than 60sec!!! It may have been doing a disk check in there somewhere... Yes, I do believe there is an FSCK running there, as there is copious disk activity, but a slow startup all the same. This may be included in the actual retail Snow Leopard...?!

 

On average, I would say the startup time after BIOS disappears, is about 20sec - 25sec.

I'm running 32 bit. This is going to be my Pro Tools machine, and since Pro-Tools isn't 64 bit I don't see any reason to change that.

Dual boot only seems to work effectively on a cold start (from shutdown).

 

A restart will often change the disk no's around, hiding the wrong partitions, and renaming the wrong partitions.

 

HANDY HINT: reboot into Windows/Linux with a Shutdown, not a restart!

I have a question about the initial set up, do I have to create a partitioned disk for the hackintosh install (ie. one drive) or can I use two separate hard drives in my system and have one as my Windows 7 partition and the other as my Snow Leopard install? Also what is better for a dual boot system, like yours is currently set up. I don't know if I really want to run it as a Windows 7 PC but if the option is there why not, unless it affects the overall stability. I am kind of new to the hackintosh thing so excuse me if this question seems basic.

Hey Lex, that is great news.

 

I use a different disk for each OS, I installed Windows first, then Linux, then OSX - replacing the Linux drive, as there is really only room for 3 mounted drives in the case.

 

I had a spare (recovered) 1.5TB SATA drive spare, and managed to squeeze it into the case. I needed to remove my Mint Linux 500GB HDD, but no biggy, as I installed the OSX drive in the same spot. The grub install is still there, on another HDD, so it won't be hard to reinstate.

 

So, I have Win 7 installed first, on it's own hard drive.

 

Another partitioned drive that is both NTFS, has grub installed

 

GUID partitioned third drive, both HFS+, MacOS installed on first partition.

 

I have found it VERY beneficial to have OS X on its own drive, and Windows on its own drive... etc. etc.

 

This makes multi-booting via the BIOS an option if anything goes really wrong.

 

PS. You will need AHCI SATA drivers for Windows!

For those having issues with DVD spin-up recurring, please see my first post (guide) at the very top!

 

This is NOT a VANILLA RETAIL INSTALL!!!

 

This is a Hazard Install (whatever that entails), a few unnecessary kexts removed (eg. AHCI-injectors), with NO DSDT.aml, and NO SleepEnabler!!!

 

I have also replaced the legacy kernel/System.kext with the ones from official Apple 10.6.7 Combo Update.

 

Added a kext for Network, and installed a multi-kext package (Hazard DVD) for sound.

 

I reckon I am at least 99% virgin MacOS, the only changes are Network/Sound kexts, PlatformUUID.kext, smbios.plist, and customised backgrounds for About this Mac, and Installer. Oh, and I get a kernel panic if I don't use pmVersion=21 as a boot flag.

I discovered that Chameleon was choking at dual-booting due to a USB ThumbDrive being inserted in a hub at startup. All consequent dual-boots have been perfect through Chameleon with this drive removed!!!
