I have an external hard drive (F:) and it just decided to start giving me problems today. Last night I updated a Microsoft Excel file, and today it will not open it because it has become corrupted. I also have a folder than is not very important that I would gladly like to delete, however I cannot because it too has been corrupted. I tried using a fileshredder program to delete the folder but it didnt work. I also tried to restore the files using Restorer2000 with no luck. Any suggestions on how I can atleast delete the folder(any other corrupt files I dont need) from the hard drive?(I dont want them to just be there even if they arent that important, they still take up space and I still dont want them there, im kinda picky about it). Any other way to save the Excel file and delete the folder? Perhaps programs that actually DO something. Thanks in advance.

open a command prompt (cmd) and then type this:

go to the hdd that has issues. f:

chkdsk /r (if i mind well)

it will check the disk for corrupted clusters.. (if there are some.. you'll lose some data but it should repair the filesystem..) so you might be able to browse and delete

this is the message i got when i tried to do a chkdsk

==============================================

F:\>chkdsk /r

The type of the file system is FAT32.

Cannot lock current drive.

Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another

process. Chkdsk may run if this volume is dismounted first.

ALL OPENED HANDLES TO THIS VOLUME WOULD THEN BE INVALID.

Would you like to force a dismount on this volume? (Y/N) n

process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be

checked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N) n

Windows is verifying files and folders...

Windows found errors on the disk, but will not fix them

because disk checking was run without the /F (fix) parameter.

the cmd also truncated some folders and found the 2 errors that i found earlier, but it didnt really do anything. should i force a dismount of the volume in an attempt to fix them properly? or try the restart method?

i ran a CHKDSK with the hard drive hooked up to a different computer and this time it seemed to work. my excel file now opens and the useless folder is now gone. thanks very much for the advice. i dont know why it worked on one computer and not the other, but the problem is still solved atleast.

  • 1 year later...

i think I've found a solution to your problem it's a program called mareew data recovery and it after scanning it shows you the files on your hdd

but you have to buy the full version to restore your file back

hope that helped
