Sony Vaio VPCEA46FG

Hi,

I have been using osx86 since Kalyway 10.5.1 and was using iAtkos S3 on my old laptop until recently I purchased a new Vaio (VPCEA46FG). I could not keep all the specs needed for osx86 in mind while buying this model as it was just perfect for my use.

SPECIFICATIONS

 • Sony Vaio HM55 Chipset
 • Intel Core i5 480
 • ATI Radeon 5470
 • (officially) Intel High Definition Audio(but windows has realtek drivers  ) and ATI HDMI Audio
 • Atheros 9285 Wireless
 • Marvell Yukon 88E8059 Ethernet

So here is the install report :

Using Retail DVD + ######

Installer starts only with GraphicsEnabler=no and it does not detect USB ports. So I formatted my drive (GUID) and installed the OS. It boots fine with ######. Installed ###### with #####. Boots right off the hard disk, but nothing else works. No graphics,LAN,wireless, sound or USB. Managed to get the wireless working with a modified kext for Atheros 9285.

Using iAtkos

Boots fine with -v cpus=2. Interestingly USB ports are detected by this DVD, so I went ahead and tried a USB drive. Selected optional kexts (including ATI enabler).Same story here. Nothing works except the wireless (with the modified kext).

What all I tried

Wireless : modified IO80211Family.kext for Atheros 9285 - WORKS

Sound : Voodoo 2.7.2 Package - Device detected(sound controls shown in settings) but no sound ALC272 patched Voodoo Works for front mic, headphone jack and speakers.

USB : IOUSBFamily.kext - DOES NOT WORK Works with option USBBusFix=Yes

Graphics : Followed the guide here : http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php...50256&st=20, no progress.Cannot view EDID info in windows or mac. Force EDID and Hoolock works with Lion

Ethernet : As of now I don't think there is a working Marvell yukon kext for 88E8059 available.

So in short, except wireless I am stuck with a install that is no good. Is there any other hint/procedure that can help me get it going?

Thanks.

More info :

The USB is now detected by the retail disc when I use : USBBusFix=yes. When I use Lion kexts for ATI 5000 controller, the screen just turns blank.

Is there really a way for at least getting the desired 1366x768 resolution in ATI radeon 5470, I would be happy even without QE/CI ;)

I did all that you mentioned. When I use chameleon, it boots up but then after starting darwin the screen goes blank. I tried using ##### CD, and the OS booted just fine. But in this way DSDT is not loaded, neither is any modification done from above is useful, right?

PS : I have formatted my entire hard drive, no windows installation exists :D So I am still waiting for this to work.

the problem must be the video

no video fix in DSDT

try with -x

Wireless also has the patch

http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=252481

the ideal is to use Snow Leopard Retail

I also think that the problem is in the video. But do you think it has something to do with the motherboard? I am using retail installation on my hard disk. Also, no version of chameleon(RC4, Aserebln,RC5 or Kabyl) can boot up my install even while using GraphicsEnabler=no, it's just ##### that can boot it up. Although I got 1366x768 resolution by the good old kernel flag "Graphics Mode"="1366x768x32".I have to type that each and every time I boot up, as ##### is using a Preboot.dmg. Any idea how to add this kernel flag to ##### image, as I cannot boot from chameleon even when I compiled a custom Preboot.dmg for RC5(or added it to boot.plist on hard disk). Spent like more than 12 hours (continously) on this yesterday. I will still look out for something once I get back home from work.

Thank you so much MaLd0n for your help, I got to learn something new from you :)

PS : The notebook that I am using closely resembles a Macbook white in looks (and that's why I purchased it) and if Snow leopard works fine on it, it is a very good cheap alternative to Macbook.

I was able to get it working with chameleon RC5 (with some minor modifications). It works in VESA mode as of now. There is a strange problem that I face. The Realtek Chip that this notebook has is ALC269. The device is detected when booted from #####(shows controls in Settings) but there is no sound. When I boot from Chameleon, the device is not detected! I have tried modified AppleHDA for ALC269, VoodooHDA and almost all other combinations of these two.

Any pointers?

EDIT :

The realtek sound chip was ALC272 (phew..). Tried various kexts for all realtek chips and finally this one worked from another kext repository website. So ALL is working now

USB - 100 % (USB 2.0)

Sound - 100% (Speakers,Headphone,Mic)

Wireless - 100%

Graphics - 50%? (no QE/CI , but proper resolution. ATI 5470 Kext/rom waiting..)

Trackpad - 100% (with multi touch gestures)

Ethernet - Waiting for 88E8059 Yukon kext.

At the end the fan speed is more than that on Windows 7 installation. Looking for the "proper" kext to fix it.

Cheers.

Hi Sangx,

I have a Sony Vaio VPCEB1S0E :

Wireless : 100% - Atheros 9285

USB : 100% - IOUSBFamily.kext (USBBusFix=Yes)

Graphics : 99% - HD5470 - (QE/CI - 1366x768 resolution - Internal LCD support with EDID - just no translucent bar)

Ethernet : 0% 88E8059 Yukon (No kexts)

Sound : 0% - No kexts

Trackpad : 0% - No kexts

I can help you to fix your graphics if you want...

Could you send me the links about Sound et Trackpad kexts?

Thanks,

Hi all

Sorry for a late reply. I assume all the kexts have been shared except trackpad. I have used the same kexts that tonymacx86 has used in #####. I will upload them as soon as I reach home. No other kexts works for multi touch on vaio afaik. For sound, I am using ALC272 kexts from kexts.com (if you have Intel high definition audio, this most probably will work).

I still am on VGA mode, and Hakoudbato, I would appreciate if you can help me fix the graphics problem. About battery indicator, I don't have it as it is not really important factor for me (the laptop light blinks when it is 15% left .. hehe)

EDIT : Your battery kext works fine! Thank you.

Have you noticed that VAIO runs at about 57-60 degrees on snow leopard whereas it is 45-50 for Windows 7? I have tried almost everything, but this temperature does not come down and the fan makes audible noise as well.

For properly temperature you have to use your dsdt file. With this I have native speedstep working.

Sangx,

I followed the same guide : EDID tutorial

I didn't find the EDID of my screen with tips and tools of this tutorial, so I used this windows tools : Monitor Asset Manager

When your computer start with the correct EDID in VGA mode, replace some kexts in Systems/Library/Extensions by kexts in this zip: Kexts pack 2.

And reboot with GraphicsEnabler=Yes and AtiConfig=Hoolock

Tell me if it's not working, or if you didn't get it (sorry for my english)

I don't have dsdt and my fan laptop is too speed. I'm interested if you succeed to fix it ;)

Alright guys, are you using a kext along with "usbbusfix=yes" to get USB working? I can boot iAtkos S2 and the retail disc usinf #####, but my USB HD isn't showing up. I know getting OS X on a Sony Vaio is a pain in the arse, so I'd much rather mess around with it on an external drive first :)
