I am worried about windows not recognizing the card or not being able to play games properly. I may not go into the testing because I have never flashed my graphics card bios, I was just curious how it effects other operating systems.

The fix addresses an issue people are having in both windows and hackintosh. Think of it as a bios update on your motherboard.

Hi guys,

I'm joining the freeze discussions since I installed my MSI GTX 460 OC yesterday.

After installing the NVIDIA drivers, I was able to choose my native resolution (1920x1200) again, but the card was not recognized properly in System Profiler (no device description, no rom version, 64mb ram). After upgrading to 10.6.7 (from 10.6.5 I think) and Chameleon RC5, the card was properly recognized after installing the NVIDIA drivers again. Since then, it's freezing very often, about three minutes after GUI start, if I don't run any video/screensaver. Surprisingly it even freezes if my VLC window is hidden behind another window, which sucks because having to watch porn all the time is very exhausting.  

Anyway, the graphic acceleration is very low. If I run GLview, I get values around 3000fps on 1920x1200x32, but Dock animations and the QuickLook (pressing space after selecting a file) is very low and the screensaver I run as wallpaper is stuttering. Can anyone confirm this?

Still hoping that better drivers will be released soon, because I'm using OSX as primary system and it worked perfectly with my old 8600GTS.

Hey all,

My 0.5 cents on this

Installed latest nVidia drivers (00f03v7), RC5 latest chameleon, 10.6.7 and having ONLY kernel panics.

Currently using iTunes visualizer method to prevent fixes.

I'm trying to understand if all of this is happening because of HDMI out on graphics or power states?

Guys,

Small thought,

Will it work if we try Mac OS Lion 10.7 Dev. preview 2 AppleGraphicsPowerManagement.kext ? I don't have DP2, can anyone give it a shot?

They said that on Lion DP2 the issue has been fixed.

I can confirm that my fermi is not freezing anymore with DP2.  I do notice some grfx corruption in the dock reflections and when resizing a vlc window, but otherwise it's smooth.  I don't think there is a way to backport the drivers to SL (i've tried copying over the drivers already and it caused my SL to KP).

Thanks for lettings us know about copying drivers ! Well, either nVidia will have new version of drivers or we will have to wait for Lion. Any way, it will be fixed! : )

I would like to ask if you can be so kind please. If you can upload the AGPM(Apple Graphics Power Management) that you have in Lion, please. To verify it, because I'm making some test with the one that we have on Snow Leopard and I think that I've got it. But As I have been seen somewhere that Lion is having Several graphics card. Because I just could found on Snow's one, the Nvidia 260, 220 and Nvidia 9500 profiles on it.

Yay, looks like I've found a way to fix it! Actually, not me, just info from Tonymac forum! I freekin' knew it, I knew it had to do with power management kext!

Here's how to do it (with screenshots bellow):

1. Find out what's you Mac's identifier, mine is MacPro3,1.

2. Go to \System\Library\Extensions\ and show contents of AppleGraphicsPowerManagement.kext, open Info.plist from it with Plist Editor or similar tool.

3. Expand IOKitPersonalities, then expand AGPM tree, you will see all the Mac's supported with this kext.

4. Lines MacPro4,1 and MacPro5,1 both have vendor device with 0640 device ID. There is also 05e2 device ID, but that is different graphics card, do not touch it since it contains different values. I changed device ID's from 0640 to 0e22 on both MacPro5,1 and MacPro4,1.

5. If you have MacPro3,1 model identifier (which is easily changed in smbios.plist from chameleon) then change MacPro4,1 entry to MacPro3,1 in Info.plist

6. Create a EFI string (I used OSx86 Tools to build custom string). I've attached it bellow, it's for 460 GTX. Then insert string in Chameleon (I used Lizard for it)

7. Repair permissions with some Kext Utility

8. REBOOT : )

Bellow is screenshot with how it should look when you're done with editing Info.plist. Also attached is EFI string for 460.

Alternatively, you can try my Info.plist which works with MacPro3,1. Not sure if it going to work, but you can try copy/paste.

OS is much more responsive and graphics are more fluid now!!!

Thanks An1r0n, thats an excellent find. Are you confirming that your KP/freezes are gone after this fix?
Testing out now on my 460GTX... will post again after I give it some time to potentially crash.

note: I didn't need to inject any custom efi strings. I believe that Chameleon 2 rc5 already has efi strings built in for Fermi cards.

I've just reinstalled my OS X SL 10.6.7 and I already made the changes so. We are going to see now. I also will keep post for further information. About how it is going

Did you receive KP's or freezes still??? I still received freezes      I'm sorry and Also we would like to review how do you have set up your com.apple.Boot.plist please an1r0n, because I'm still having freezes

Hey guys,

Well, I had a damn KP after more than 6 hours of uptime and no freezes. {censored}. Strange thing, KP did not happen because of nvgf100 kext, instead of com.apple.geforce.plist. Hopefully, this is valuable to someone who has indepth knowledge about this issue.

BUT, i think that this might be a half of the solution. Freezes seem to occur just because of applegraphicspowermanagement kext, so I think editing kext might have eliminated at least the freezes.

Let's try with VLC or iTunes visualizer running, that way we won't get KP. Hopefully, now there won't be any freezes.

Whoever tried to edit applegraphicspowermanagement kext, please report if you had freeze after running VLC or iTunes visualizer.

Just freezes or KP? Did you do all the steps? Which Chameleon are you running? Newest nvidia drivers (from nvidia site, quadro 4000 for mac)? As for com.apple.boot plist, use this Lizard

I tried with graphics detection, but it didn't go so fast as with custom EFI string. I read this first in comments somewhere, really works faster.

Thank you! It worked for me. It hasn't got any freezes for two days now. Before I got freeze every like 10 minutes or so. I downloaded your files and replaced and did the EFI string. My card is Zotac gtx460.

Yeah I still have KP, so far twice, but less. I used the official driver of Nvidia. Here is my com.apple.Boot.plist

Guys,

Seems like adding arch=i386 to com.apple.boot.plist (I suggest using Lizard tool, just select 32bit compatibility mode and it will add it) will increase uptime! I still haven't had freeze nor KP, for full day.

32bit kernel boot makes sense...

Also real Mac Quadro 4000(fermi) Mac Edition has KP Problems !
