Macbook roast

The macbook is inarguable the best designed laptop ever. No laptop is better than the macbook. Its 100% perfect.

That said, no laptop can be perfect. In the store, I thought it was a bit flimsy and the screen was angled a bit low and a bit dim. I don't know if thats true, I didn't spend much time there. I've heard issues about the battery and overheating.

I would like to have an open discussion about Macbook and Macbook Pro complaints. Since every apple issues discussion I've started has been ruined by the bickering of apple fanatics, this forum has a few rules (moderators please enforce):

1) Comments must be from actual first or second hand experience or benchmark tests.

2) NO POSITIVE COMMENTS WHATSOEVER! (we know them or not)

3) No questioning the validity of the contents of ANY post. If you disagree, keep it to yourself.

4) No quoting.

5) Exaggeration is acceptable.

6) If you disagree with these rules don't post here.

See if this works.

Well I'm on my fourth macbook

the first two were overheating

the third recieved the dark brown spots around the trackpad and bezel

apple sent me a new one

and now it is getting the spots as well

-- Before I had the macbook i've had

Two 15in Powerbooks

12inch Powerbook

two 14inch iBooks

I've also had a Viao, Dell XPS, Inspiron 6000, and the HP Livestrong edition

-- And I believe I'm qualified to say that these MacBooks are not anywhere near what I would call Apple quality. In fact I call mine the reason I might not buy another Apple computer.

p.s. I forgot to mention the crappy Video power, battery life, build quality, and kernal panics!

I'm surprised that these products have such severe overheating and quality problems for two reasons.

1- Not many other manufacturers are having problems with Core Duos in terms of overheating, these processors generally run very cool and you can see them running cool in an 800$ Acer every day.

2- Asus manufactures them (AFAIK) and Asus notebooks (especially high end ones) stink of quality and robustness.

About the overly applied thermal paste : it is not possible to see that sort of carelessness on any Asus product, I can't explain how it could happen on Macbook/Macbook Pros, perhaps the Macbook pro was rushed off the assembly line to be among the first core duo notebooks in the market but how could Apple or Asus not learn from their mistakes and have similar problems with Macbooks, that I can not answer.

Ahh, just the thread I need. Now here are my complaints:

1. I hate the moo. I bought a computer not a cow. I didn't think a $1400 computer would have cow-like behavior

2. I have the overheating. This dang thing gets up to 200 degrees F. I'm surprised that that there hasn't been a fire yet.

3. That stupid whine. It's not really the worst of the problems, but it can get really annoying when I'm in a quiet room working.

4. The most annoying problem of all. The discoloring. I didn't buy a multi-color computer. I paid for a white MacBook. I can't stand looking at it.

Why Apple, why?

UPDATE: Apple real worked some wonders with the new firmware update. The moo, overheating, and whine are a thing of the past. :)

The battery life seems to really suck on my MacBook. I don't know what the standard life is but it seems to be pretty short.

This thing gets so darn hot that at times it is not bearable, but not too often is it that hot

Getting a black one was great for me, no discoloration.

you included macbook pro complaints, so here it goes...

i bought a $2500 laptop with a huge ass apple on the lid. it was overheating and the temp sensor didnt work, so i couldnt even read the prcessor temperatures and the cooling wouldnt always kick in. i also had the whine. it would squeal like a freakin 2 year old who doesnt get her way. i ignored it, but then got it repaired and i got a flawless logicboard and temp sensor.

and then they upgraded the processor speeds a couple weeks after i bought mine.

it moo's, it gets hot, its turning yellow, its going back to apple tomorrow (only for the latter, seems the rest is normal behavior)

edit: i dont want to seem positive but the new firmware update seems to have cured the moo and it seems to be running cooler. maybe to early to tell though.

I STILL HATE THE YELLOW

Starting to feel glad I hav'nt "LOCKED" myself into the "THINK DIFFERENT CROWD" .........LOL. Hey guys and gals, I told ya a long time ago that apples hardware was NO BETTER than any other manufacturer's, and that you " BLINDLY FOLLOWING MAC FAITHFUL" would have to soon learn this lesson. Just in case I get flamed...lets remember "I OWN A MACBOOK PRO"(Pics are on this site) so don't start calling me a troll(Not that I really CARE...LOL). Anyway, not trying to rub it in your faces, just "KEEPIN" IT REAL" (looking over shoulder, hoping a Dave Chapelle skit does'nt come back to haunt me....LOL) . In my opinion (although this is the first true Apple I've owned besides my S900 clone, which I guess does'nt count...LOL) apple cheaped out on the manufacturing "SPECIFICATIONS" and materials which it's true hardcore fans..ie most of the users on this forum, deserve. You guys should REALLY take heed of this situation, as Apple has really screwed up!!! I really hope that my MBP continues to work well (it's not perfect as I'd thought it would be but decent), cause if they screw me over like they've done you Mac "FAITHFUL", I'll NEVER consider another Apple product. Good luck to all, and I hope all your problems get resolved, as they deserve to be...... :):sorcerer::tomato::)

1. Overheats, not to the point that it shuts down, but it hurts to hold it.

2. A bit flimsy Not that much, but there could be some improvement

3. Screen Cleaning let me tell you, it's tough.

And sandmanfvrga, It's a great computer, but there are lemons as there are with any computer. This is a NEGATIVE comments thread, not all the great aspects.

Well, I would like to say, that I haven't had my MacBook for very long, just a few days, so some of the problems might not show up yet, like discoloration.

On that note, my problems, are the speakers are too low, its hard to hear anything out of them with any level of background noise.

The heat doesn't seem abnormal to me, but I did just update the firmware. To test Im running an app at 100% cpu usage, and watching temperature ad it hasn't gone above 65?C once. To note, I've had the app running for over 3 hours now to verify that it was the case.

I hope it fixes everyone elses issues. As far as discoloration, I think that is due to having your hands on the pads and the reaction of the material to skin and oils. Just my 2 cents.

I tested my new macbook today, and got the max temp to 81 degrees celsius, using ableton live at 166% processor load. Is there maybe a better benchmark program like cpu burn or cpu prime for xp? I mean xbench goes too fast to get the maximum temp stabilized. One other thing is that when running cpu demanding tasks it jumps down to 1.5 ghz, and sometimes even as low as 1 ghz. Do your macbooks also drop down like this when the cpu is under heavy load?

Comparing with my laptop pc, the cpu frequency on the macbook at idle seems a bit high (1.5 ghz), if it would go down to 600 mhz or so when idle, the temperature should decrease a lot.

Think I gonna try the new firmware, but first I want to know if my macbook is too hot, referring to those drops in cpu speed.

I guess my biggest gripe about the MBP that I got was it was part of a lemon production week. Most/All the MBPs from that week had bad logic boards that caused it to crash randomly whenever Airport was active. Needless to say after dropping $2000 on a machine I would hope that the kinks would be worked out by week 20. Anyho, I then dealt with AppleCare not wanting to take the machine back until they could verify the problem. So they send me to the nearest Apple store. I produce the problem and the "Genius" decides that making a new account with a different name fixed the problem. I go home reluctantly, machine crashes. Call AppleCare for the third time. They tell me to reinstall the OS after reformatting for the 4th time. FINALLY they decide to have me send it in for replacement. A free carrying case and new MBP later I was up and running on a near flawless machine. Thank god. I feel better having gotten that out. Thanks for the oppertunity ^_^

You can run two instances of chess (drag a copy to your desktop) and set both to computer vs computer. That will definately peg the processsors at 100%.

Yup, thats what i mean. i called apple care and they sent me a box,got the chance to get to my nearest apple store today though so i think im gonna take it in there and have them do it.

I forgot to mention the vertical coloued lines when i turn it on, but i know how to fix that now.

I've got the discoloring badly. I think I'll give Applecare a call to see about getting my MacBook fixed. Thanks for the info.

I miss my macbook because of these issues..

1. Random shutdown... it will not give you any signal, like hung ups, kernel panic or freeze... ITS JUST RANDOM SHUTDOWN.. see here for video..http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3LU8chsw1Rk ... once it started it will be frequent... and apple doesnt care..

2. Progressive finely colored vertical lines on boot-up... you will get shock once you have this

The coloured vertical lines seem to be caused by resetting the PMU after updating to 10.4.7. I have read that it can be cured by just changing the screen resolution in OSX and then putting it back again. didnt have time to test this before i sent my macbook back to apple today but i told them about it so if it comes back and still does it there will be trouble.

ya... pram and pmu reset and changing resolution back and forth once you able to boot seems to partially solve the rainbow effect... but should a new macbook must do that??? none of my laptop on windows do that... its frustrating having this issue
