Dell Inspiron 6400 Installation Issue

I am currently trying to set my Dell Inspiron 6400 to dual-boot both Windows 7 and OSx. I created an 80gb partition on my laptop's hard drive and formatted it in the HFS+ file system using Parted Magic. When I got to installing OSx, the entire process was seeming to run very slow; the graphics were not smooth and the menus that I had to click through took a few seconds to respond to my click. However, it successfully installed. Upon restarting my computer and trying to load OSx, I ended up with a gray screen that told me that my computer needed to be restarted. I followed these directions and got the same screen again.

I then tried booting verbose after Googling what that meant in the hopes that it would get me in, but instead I saw the following as part of my screen:

MAC Framework successfully initialized
using 10485 buffer headers and 4096 cluster IO buffer headers
  Unsynchronized TSC for cpu 1 : 0x0000000691394d9c, delta 0xe6a141c0

Given that I am a total newb when it comes to Mac, I honestly am not sure what has gone wrong here. I believe that I read somewhere on the forum here that the panic thing is caused when an unneeded driver is installed in the customize section of the Snow Leopard installation. Does the above chunk say that I indeed installed the wrong thing using customize? And if so, what can I do to make sure that I don't install the wrong thing when I go to reinstall Snow Leopard?

Oh, and below are the specs on my laptop:

  • Dell Inspiron 6400/E1505
  • Intel Core 2 Duo T7200
  • ATi Mobility Radeon X1400

Which guide did you use to install OS X?

Also which installation did you use? Retail or patched?

it's a dell... if you're doing the iatkos route, when you boot the installer, type: "cpus=1" (minus the quotation marks, that will make your installer run in just 1 core). then, when you get to the drivers, instead of choosing RTC, choose RTC 32-bit. (that is one of your problems why you're getting a KP).

Oh jeez; I read my post a few times to make sure I didn't leave something out and I ended up doing just that. wacko.gif I was using iAtkos S3 V2 and followed the read me file that was created for it and posted on Teh Paradox. I couldn't find a guide from someone who has the same laptop as I do that listed what they checked off in the customize menu so I read the descriptions carefully and clicked what I thought I needed to have.

I am indeed going the iAtkos route. I tried the "cpus=1" in the boot menu but it didn't seem to make a difference if it was supposed to clear up the, for a lack of better term, choppiness of the installation. I will give the installation another go, though, using both the cpus=1 setting and making sure I click RTC 32-bit and see what happens.

Well, I tried to install OS X once again using your recommendations, and lo and behold, I am now posting this from OS X! :)

Edit: My keyboard is now functioning thanks to the VoodooPS2Controller, but my touch pad is still not functioning. Is there a Voodoo kext specifically for the touch pad?

delete VoodooPS2controller.kext and install ApplePS2controller.kext or something. just extract it from the iatkos install cd using pacifist.

I actually said screw it and reinstalled OS X and made sure that I chose drivers this time under the PS/2 section and I now have a fully functioning keyboard and touch pad! I think the last thing that needs to be taken care of is the video card and I will be set.

Ditto here, 3 days it's taken.... though 1 day of it was after trying to shrink my windows 7 partition and losing all the partition info on the drive. One day was spent restoring those partitions.... so 2 days! I have speedstep working and wireless (Dell card) and shutdown and sleep. Video is the proper resolution and working great. I just need to add some of the kexts for things like SD card reader and battery. Thanks for the tip about RTC 32-bit. That got me past the boot crash screen and up and running. Very exciting.

I'm running the same OS and I have most likely done the same thing. I don't want to reinstall because I had many issues getting this far on this Dell D 820 I had it up and running but with no wifi or lan. I read some posts and followed their instructions. Well let's just say that it crashed and had to perform a redo. I'm getting this. panic(cpu 1 caller 0x4fb232): "A kext releasing a(n) OSArray has corrupted the registry."@/SourceCache/xnu/xnu-1504.3.12/libkern/c++

I got this far by implementing the -x -v npci=0x2000 at boot.it also reads unsychronized TSC for cpu 1 as well Any clues on this?
