Under the preferences of the virtual machine, click on "Network" and select bridged network. Point it to the device that you use to connect to the net and everything should work.

First of all, get rid of 10.4.1. It's from last summer! It's old, slow, nothing runs on it, and highly unstable. Get at least 10.4.4. You might have better luck.

1.- you are using vmware from win or from linux?
2.- when you installed vmware workstation you was asked for network adpaters will be activated, and in whiich modality?, try yo install vmware again and look for that...
2.- during the installation look if your ethernet card (tou use it in windows) vmware places it in vmnet0,1,2,3....in bridged mode and when you configure your virtual OSx86, you have to select, not bridged, try other and look for vmnet (with number of vmnet vmware cofigure it)
i had the same problem on linux, and i got internet on XP, on OSX86 and LAN for sharing files between XP and linux via samba (with another ethernet in host only mode)
