Here is a quick guide on how to install Snow Leopard on an E725. At least, this is how I did it. At the conclusion of this, I have few questions. If anyone would be willing to help, that would be great! (I would have posted this somewhere else, but new users can only post here.)

This is certainly NOT the definitive guide to anything; I'm only a simple plumber. But it will accomplish what I have described below; on an E725, of course. And I'm only posting because, first, it might help someone else; and second, because I need some help (below.) But it hardly seemed fair to ask and not contribute.

Also, many, many thanks go out to the various online forums including, but not limited to, Kyle, Big Floppy Donkey Disk, and TonyMacx86. Without these, and other guides, I never would have accomplished this.

Oh, and I am posting this while using my Snow Leopard E725. :)

Install Snow Leopard 10.6.3 on an eMachines E725

A. Obtain an eMachines E725. (Important step. Some people, when trying to install SL on an E725, have caused themselves considerable heartache by overlooking this first step.)

:)

B. The E725 has three factory partitions**:

1. *: Recovery Partition (listed first in Easus Partition Mangager; 12 Gb.)

2. *: PQ Service (listed second; 200 Mb +/-)

3. *: C: Where Windows7 was installed**. (220 Gb.)

(**I list this because, I would like to get it re-installed at some point--one of my questions at the bottom; but I'll probably settle for XP right now. I can't just now because the Recovery DVD's I burned will not write to the MSDOS partition I created when installing Snow Leopard; see below. Nor will the DVD's write to un-partitioned space.)

1. The first thing I did was save the Recovery Partition(1 above) and the PQ Service(2 above) to an external Hard Disk Drive. I also downloaded a few things:

A. #####. Many thanks to TonyMacx86!

B. Snow Leopard Updates:

a. 10.6.4 Update (**Did not use.)

b. 10.6.5 Update

c. 10.6.6 Update (**Important: The one I downloaded was only like 140 Mb or so.)

I wasn't sure which I would need.

(I used Easus Partition Manager above, to right-click and copy the drives to an unallocated portion of an external disk drive. I did this while I still had Windows 7 installed.)

2. I did a Factory restore of the E725.

(Either "Alt+F10" at boot up, or "Start > Programs > eMachines > Recovery options > Restore.)

3. I burnt the 3 Recovery DVD's.

("Start > Programs > eMachines > Recovery options > Advanced options > Burn Recovery Disks. This way, of course, you can completely restore your E725 back to Factory settings if you want to. I did test this; it is working.)

Oh, I did not have to set BIOS settings to ACHI mode per TonyMacx86; they were already set to that.

4. Inserted ##### into the drive and restarted. Gotta say, ##### is freakin' awesome! (Middle of the page; you will need to burn it to a disc. Don't know how? Google it.)

5. Once ##### loaded, I ejected it and put in my Retail Snow Leopard, 10.6.3 DVD in the drive.

(I bought mine at a local electronics store: $29.)

Then, when the disc light went off, I pressed F5. That gave me the option to boot into the SL DVD.

6. After about 2-3 minutes, the Language selection came up. I selected English.

7. I then used Disk Utility to do the following:

a. Erase and Partition the ENTIRE hard disk drive.

(Which is why I saved ALL partitions to an external disk, AND made the Recovery DVD's.)

b. Create 2 (two) partitions:

1. 125 Gb, Mac Partition, Journaled

2. 125 Gb, "Free Space"

(Initially I tried this as MSDOS so that I could install Windows. And, according to some of the sites I have listed above, you will need it MSDOS to install Windows for a dual-boot. But with my Recovery DVD's only, Windows 7 will not write to either MSDOS, or Free Space. And I haven't gone any further yet, so...)

8. After creating your partitions, select Options (bottom left in Disk Utility) and make sure you use GUID Partition Table.

9. Proceed with Snow Leopard, 10.6.3 install. I de-selected all Printers, all Languages (except English,) but I did select X11 and Rosetta.

10. The install finished, though the screen would seem to pause if you didn't move the mouse. I then re-started.

11. Using #####, I had the selection of the ##### disc or Snow Leopard.

I clicked Snow Leopard and set up the computer.

Here is what was working at this point:

a. Mouse Pad: just fine, including two-finger scrolling.

b. Volume: it seemed to be at about 70% of what it should be.

c. Video: but it only gave me the option of 1024x768

(which I want to change.)

d. USB: worked fine.

e. Ethernet/LAN: works fine.

f. Wireless: NOT WORKING.

g. Other ports: Video out, Sound out, Mic in, Card Reader: Don't know.

12. This done, using the update packages described above, I updated to 10.6.5.

And here is where what I did is different than other guides. I DID NOT USE #####.

Then I re-started with the ##### CD in the drive. It worked.

13. This done, I updated to 10.6.6.

Once again, I DID NOT USE #####.

Then I re-started with the ##### CD in the drive. This update worked also.

14. I am now using 10.6.6 to write this. post-722680-1295665651_thumb.png

Here is what is working now:

a. Mouse Pad: just fine, includes 2-finger scrolling b. Volume: fine, same as above.

c. Video: same as above.

d. USB: NOT WORKING NOW.

e. Ethernet/LAN: fine, same as above.

f. Wireless: working, but see below (**)

g. Other: same as above, NOT tested yet.

Also, I COMPLETELY disabled all sleep/hibernate settings.

(**How I got the wireless working: I had an older iMac with a bad Logic Board. I robbed the Broadcom wireless card out of it and installed it on this machine. Worked fine. It saved me having to find a kext. The odd thing is that the card I took out was a Broadcom1030, and the one I put in was also a Broadcom.)

Here is what I would like help to get working:

a. Video Resolution: E725 is supposed to have 1366x768

b. USB

c. Enable Sleep Settings

d. Make it recognize, properly, the DVD-RW drive.

(It recognizes it, but not properly: IE, in Profiler.)

e. Anything someone reading this might suggest.

f. I would LOVE to know how to take the 12 Gb Recovery Partition and create an ISO or DVD that would work on this machine. I suspect that, when the DVD's see that the disk is not 250 Gb like it should be, they refuse to continue. So it may be something as simple as altering a file (.ini, etc?) in the contents of that Recovery Partition. Any thoughts at all about this would be greatly appreciated.

If you have any questions about anything, and I able to answer, I will.

If you are wanting to help me solve the problems I listed and need information from System Profiler, or whatever, let me know.

Thanks.
