so after a year and a half and 2 different computers, i finally have a stable 10.6.3 install running with sound, network, and graphics w/ QE/CI, but im a little hesitant to update since, technically, im still a n00b at all this.

so heres my system specs

Mobo: MSI P43 Neo-f

CPU: Intel Core2Duo 2.4ghz

Ram: 3gb (3 x 1gb) DDR2 800mhz

GPU: Sapphire Tech 4670HD 1gb DDR3

Distro: iAtkos S3 10.6.3

im also dual booting along with Windows 7 64bit

the only reason im hesitant is that i had to jump through a few hoops to get my graphics card working, i.e. replacing boot files and editing boot.plist.

it's not a problem of editing them, i know how, it's will the update "break" my system? i do have a Time Machine backup from the day i got it to run too, so i can revert back.

so, can i update normally (through software update or combo update) or will it be too much hassle to be worth it?

thanks,

Only you can say if any hassle is worth it. Just make sure you have a tested bootable backup first. I prefer using Carbon Copy Cloner to Time Machine. I backup to a separate disc & install chameleon to that disk to make it bootable.

If you use a legacy kernel that will need updating as will sleep enabler if you use it (delete sleep enabler before updating)

thanks, the only thing is, is that i dont know about the boot file, other than it needs to be modified so that the framebuffer for my graphics card is set to "flicker" other than that its a standard kernel as far as im aware. ill attach it for you though. as for my backup, i know it works, i tested it out to make sure.

other than that, updating wouldnt hurt then?

If you have current backup with everything working as it should, then if it were me, i would try. BUT it is your decision, it it your system.

Unless you need to update to run certain software, you my want to leave as is. Again your decision

I can't make the decision for you and certainly can't promise an update will go smoothly.

ill probably give it a shot, just because, i really dont need the update, but im picking about computers, its just an OCD thing.

thanks for your advice/help

I would suggest making a bootable backup to a USB HD using CCC and use that as your testing platform. Don't forget to install Chameleon on that USB drive to make it bootable.

alrite..look at my pc spec below... it is so much similar to yours...!! my advice is to upgrade your os to 10.6.6 .. before you do that..please know that i used hazard 10.6.2 to make my installation work... it was the easiest install i ever did... you can install it via software update or via combo update downloaded from apple..

may i suggest a better alternative.. my success rate depended on the usage of hazard distro..are u willing to download it..and do a clean install if you dont mind the hassle... otherwise my explanations could cause certain complications.. !!

so lemme know.. !!

Can't agree. IMO that is just swapping from one distro method to another. Better keeping installs as vanilla as possible

Adding kexts to Extra/Extensions folder unless they will only run from S/L/E

Not touching the original "com.apple.Boot.plist" only editing the one in the Extra folder.

I agree too. I wouldn't have suggested my method if his config wasn't close to mine... the reason i told him to switch to hazard was due to the smallest number of kexts i've ever installed.. Want a list of what i installed..

check this out.

in hazard 10.6.2

10.6.2 combo update

pc efi 10.5,

evo enabler 4870 extra extensions,

apple rtc ,

ahci satafix,

ioata family fix

.. there are only 3 kexts in my extra/extensions folder... i have everything working out of the box except sleep ..

i think the hassle would be worth it....!!

If it were me and I was going to install or re-install on this hardware, I would go with a retail install. Much cleaner than any distro.

That was largely why I left iAtkos and moved to vanilla (as in the retail SL upgrade DVD).

I use only three modified kexts (only one broke due to 10.6.6):

1. ATIFramebuffer.kext (required by HD5450-specific CI/QE enabler for 10.6.4+; is *not* broken by 10.6.6 Combo Update)

2. VoodooHDA (normally used by HDMI audio-out from AMD HD5450/Manhattan HDMI audio, but broke in 10.6.6 Combo Update)

3. ATY_Init.kext (required by enabler referenced in #1 above until application of 10.6.6, which obsolesces this kext).

I've added two drivers:

1. kX Project driver 1.30 (swapped X-Fi XtremeGamer PCI out for Audigy Classic that had been shelved)

2. Ralink wireless-N driver for SL (factory driver for Tenda WG311U wireless-N stick)

The only two hassles is that x86_64 bootup is slow (much slower than an i386 boot). No Kitchen Pitchin (what I call kernel panics) - just slow as the dickens. The other is that I have to swap sound cards (I use the X-Fi XtremeGamer in 7 Ultimate x64 and in the same slot where the Audigy Classic goes on the Hack side), which makes a complete shutdown a mandatory (in either direction).

Otherwise, I use the same apps pretty much on both sides (the only difference is that Firefox 4 beta *is* my default Web browser for the snowed-in kitty, but not for Windows 7, where IE9 RC rules the roost).
