Installing Snow Leopard On A Dell Precision 490

I decided to write this guide for the Dell 490 to try and help others get their 490 running. I have a put together a zip file that contains a 490Boot.iso, a Dell Precision 490 patched DSDT.aml file, a smbios.kext file and some extras all in one place so you do not have to hunt all over the internet to find them.

 

 

 

The specs of my 490 is as follows:

2x Xeon 5150 2.66GHz processors (shows in System Profiler as Dual-Core Xeons)

4GB RAM (plan to upgrade to 16GB later)

Gigabyte nVidia GeForce 8400GS (you will need to edit com.apple.Boot.plist if you have a different card)

STAC9200 on board audio (audio out works with VoodooHDA.kext)

Rosewill RC-400 Gigabit network card

250GB Western Digital SATA Windows drive

160GB Western Digital SATA Ubuntu Linux drive

400GB Western Digital SATA Mac OS X 10.6.5 drive

 

 

The DSDT.aml has already been patched for the SATA, HPET & RTC issues.

 

The smbios.kext will need to be edited with info to match your 490, such as cpu speed, memory & serial number.

 

The com.apple.Boot.plist will need to be edited if you do not have a nVidia 8400GS video card.

 

The first thing you need to do is download the Dell 490 Install here, unzip the package and burn the 490Boot.iso to a CD, you can do this under Mac OS X or Windows. If you do this under Windows copy the rest of the files to a USB drive or burn to a CD.

 

Boot from the 490Boot CD and at the boot prompt screen swap the boot disk with the retail Mac OS X install disk (just buy it). Wait for a few seconds and press F5 to refresh the prompt screen. Click on the OS X Install DVD and follow the prompts to install. My 400GB hard drive is partitioned to a 100GB Mac system drive & a 300GB Work drive.

 

When the Mac OS X installation has finished reboot with the 490Boot CD disk and at the boot prompt screen choose your Mac hard drive to boot from. After filling out the info Apple wants you to fill out you will come to the desktop. The first thing that needs to be done is to install Chameleon 2 R5 r693 to your Mac hard drive. Once that is done you will need access to the files you downloaded and put on a USB drive or burned to a CD. Copy the DSDT.aml file to the root of your Mac drive, I also have it in the Extra/Extensions folder. Copy the com.apple.Boot.plist & the smbios.plist to the Extra folder on you Mac drive. If you look there is a folder named Extra Extensions, you will need to copy all of the kexts in that folder to the Extra/Extensions folder on you Mac hard drive. To get the sound working open the Kexts folder in the 490 package and copy VoodooHDA.kext to System/Library/Extensions folder. Now go to the Apps folder in the 490 Install package and unzip Kext_Utility.zip and copy to your desktop. Double click Kext Utility and enter your password. When Kext Utility is finished eject the 490Boot CD and reboot your computer.

 

I have not received my Rosewill network card yet so this install does not have network support yet.

i have found your boot disk very useful and I can get everything working except my RealTek 8169 network card. If I use Realtex1000SL.kext the card is recognised but it connect and claim it is

 

connected with manual IP setup. but nothing happens. router does not see it, it cannot see internet any ideas

 

 

 

 

 

 

Thanks fo your dell 490 boot disk. I have an RTL8169 network card. Cannot get this to work. if I use EMPIRE boot disk

it immediately recognises networlk card but then gets stuck. Do I need to do something special for this network card to work.

Hi thanks very much for your small guide. Could you send us your exact configuration of your Precision 490 and also your BIOS version with exact settings (HT disabled?, CPU Count...etc.).

For my case, with Geforce 9500 512Mb, the precision doesn't boot with your CD.

Glad to see others rocking the 490.

 

Quick question: I tried in vain to get any other kernel than the AMD/P4 varieties (specifically the test7 kernel) to boot without KP on my 490 with dual 5160's. I assume from your post that you're using the vanilla kernel to run SL.

 

I forget which (legacy patched)kernel I've been using for a while now, but it supports hyperthreading on the 4 physical cores (to 8 logical) but precludes > 4G RAM, of course and no speed stepping.

 

I see you're using 5150's which are just a step slower than mine (same family I presume). Can you comment on kernel compatibility/performance/cpu features leveraged?

Hi,

He is using a Retail OS X DVD (10.6.3), so the kernel isn't patched.

 

For those who are using this card and doesn't get the QE/CL try to update chameleon and install a patched NVDANV50HAL.kext

 

About the network card, if it's not working... try putting the card in a different pci port (you have to open your computer).

I got Working my 490 now with this tutorial, Thanks.

 

If you have the Broadcom BCM5752 (pci14e4,1600) Network Card this trick can help you to make it work.

 

 

Copy the kext (AppleBCM5751Ethernet.kext) to /System/Library/Extensions

and to /System/Library/Extensions/IONetworkingFamily.kext/Contents/Plugins don't forget to delete first the existing kext here.

 

Now we are going to repair the kexts, open Terminal:

 

sudo chown -R 0:0 (drag your kext)

sudo chmod -R 755 (drag your kext)

 

Do the same in the places that we have the AppleBCM5751Ethernet.kext

 

Reboot and Enjoy!!

 

I'm having problems in Snow Leopard with stream videos and audio, but I can download files and surf the web very well. :-( I think i have something bad with my Flash.

 

But in Lion is working 100%!!!!!

Is it possible to get your bios settings as my own sticks on the grey boot screen and cant go any further? I tried to install from the [url="http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/279450-why-insanelymac-does-not-support-tonymacx86/"]#####[/url] cd and when i eject the [url="http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/279450-why-insanelymac-does-not-support-tonymacx86/"]#####[/url] cd and load OSX 10.6 install DVD, it also reboot on the grey apple logo screen. I cloned my sata hardrive from my other working hackintosh to another sata drive and connect it to the Dell Precision 490 i am still getting stock at the same apple grey screen. Please help.

xk3r, is your adapter showing as 'Built-In' using this kext? I have a 490 and can't get anywhere with AppStore in Lion. I suspect it's because I can't get any of the 'built-in' tricks to work.

Hmm.. I just got a Dell Precision 490, Quad Core as well with 2 gigs of Ram and a 128MB NVIDIA QUADRO FX550 card. I've been trying for most of the weekend to get it going with OSX but no luck.

 

Using the Dell 490 boot cd in the first post, I can boot, but then when trying to load from a Vanilla Snow Leopard install it just fails with KP's. I've tried lots of different -v -x etc options, even tried [url="http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/279450-why-insanelymac-does-not-support-tonymacx86/"]#####[/url] with a number of different options, and even disabled sound (as that seemed to work for one person). Often the KP's seemed to be different, to begin with it was the PCI Root UID not found. (my graphics card is in PCI slot 2), and another one was around what seemed to be a CPU thread (expecting 3 threads but only found 2, or maybe it was the other way around)

 

Anyone have any suggestions about why it's not even loading the vanilla install?

Ok in case anyone wonders.. the KP's I was getting around the CPU were due to this issue - http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=186609

So I got a version of Snow Leopard 10.6.3 and installed from that and things were working a lot better.. Though I still can't boot up normally. It just freezes once it gets to the area around the DMOS loading section. Think it's a problem with some other kext/bios setting.

Snow Leopard OSX86 10.6.6 SSE2/SSE3 Intel Only by Hazard but it cannot see my h/d<LI>so tried iAtkos 10.6.6 and same result, DU just cannot see the drive.<LI>BUT Ideneb 10.5.5 distro sees the HD and installs especially if i dont add any extras in the customisation, and it install and reboots just fine.<LI>had trouble seeing my CPU's properly but i reset everything in the BIOS and it sees 2 CPU 4 Cores, which is good cos I have 2 x quad cores ready to go in 2.33GHz.So it is nothing to do with what file system or partitioning is on the drive, because I am attempting the 10.6 disc again with my 10.5 taking up Partition 1.

 

I'd really like to know how others got over that, or why these two distros cannot see the drives after all is'nt DU the same and just ripped from a legal disc?

 

I had a look at smbios file you laid out and understand how to edit that and the info i will require to put in regarding CPU Memory etc

 

I have been trying to do a netbook Samsung @ the same time and having similar results choosing the wrong drivers turning the mic into a Theramin that was weird, so i understand choosing the wrong driver can totally screw up an install.

 

 

 

I've watched a lot of crappy youtube videos most of whom sail through an install if only i had found it that easy.

 

i see someone has resolved the Broadcom ethernet issue, so i'm a bit tentative about kexts even bootloaders so far even hough i've usually clicked one of those only once has abootloader installed!

 

i especially want to get a bootloader on the netbook as I have 3 partitions on that and I'm using the 3rd part for OSX but it will always be completely unbootable as is it will require a loader

 

thats something i notice on those YT vids OSX always seems to be on Partit 1.

 

also they never quite show you everything working.

 

So any help tips etc much appreciated I will get a new SL tonight see if that helps.

I am going to try iDeneb v1.4 10.5.6 on own right now to see the results i get.

All good recognised 2 Cpu x 2.33GHz all 8 Cores

 

Memory all good too

 

IDeneb does not give a lot of driver support options or an addition of bootloader either

 

but it did install a lot faster.

 

ATI X1300 Full range of resolution

 

No Quartz support

 

No DVDRW

 

So that's iDeneb Ver;10.5.5 So still only on Leopard

So we begin again:

 

Now the fact is Poster NUM: 1 done a clean install with their boot disc and Retail SL

 

So I thought to try out a few things, since it did not work for me.

 

In XP setup under AHCI no HD detected under SATA OK so I tried that out with the iATKOS distro both times nothing no HD what they changed in their disc utility I dont know!

 

Back to the original install instruction, so I tried both SATA & AHCI for the posters install same every time that screen of death, this is getting to be like Windows blue screens!

 

Now poster 1 had a Nvidia card so I swapped out my ATI for a Nvidia same result death.

 

I don't now if there was some other BIOS Setting that required changing he never said, I have mone at default settings.

 

(Even as I type out this iDeneb has just seen my HD once again and doing the partition, that does not make sense why are these new distros iATKOS and HAZARD failing to detect HD's? using the correct AHCI setting.)

 

So why does it not work for me and the HD I am using also came from a G5 so its mac certified.

 

Now if any of those people who has success I even see Lion by XK3R installed please shed some light.

 

Now do the 490's have two boards or was it just a bios update because there are 2 spec sheets from Dell one Global one Europe/UK

 

UK: max supported 5100 Family xeon max 1066 FSB

 

Global: Max supported Dual 5100 series 1333FSB & Quad 5300 series 1333FSB

Maxtor 250 Gb From G5

 

I have used ATI X1300 256mb & Geoforce 9600 512mb but only ok with x1300 iDeneb 10.5.5

loaded ok with geoforce and i installed the injector for 512mb from customize options but it got stuck on restart, so nvidia did not work for me

 

Would really like to have SL or Lion

Is it possible to get your bios settings as my own sticks on the grey boot screen and cant go any further? I tried to install from the [url=&quot;http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/279450-why-insanelymac-does-not-support-tonymacx86/&quot;]#####[/url] cd and when i eject the [url=&quot;http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/279450-why-insanelymac-does-not-support-tonymacx86/&quot;]#####[/url] cd and load OSX 10.6 install DVD, it also reboot on the grey apple logo screen. I cloned my sata hardrive from my other working hackintosh to another sata drive and connect it to the Dell Precision 490 i am still getting stock at the same apple grey screen. Please help.

7gb DDR 2 RAM

Sata 400gb, 400gb and 80gb Hardrives

So we begin again:

 

Now the fact is Poster NUM: 1 done a clean install with their boot disc and Retail SL

 

So I thought to try out a few things, since it did not work for me.

 

In XP setup under AHCI no HD detected under SATA OK so I tried that out with the iATKOS distro both times nothing no HD what they changed in their disc utility I dont know!

 

Back to the original install instruction, so I tried both SATA & AHCI for the posters install same every time that screen of death, this is getting to be like Windows blue screens!

 

Now poster 1 had a Nvidia card so I swapped out my ATI for a Nvidia same result death.

 

I don't now if there was some other BIOS Setting that required changing he never said, I have mone at default settings.

 

(Even as I type out this iDeneb has just seen my HD once again and doing the partition, that does not make sense why are these new distros iATKOS and HAZARD failing to detect HD's? using the correct AHCI setting.)

 

So why does it not work for me and the HD I am using also came from a G5 so its mac certified.

 

Now if any of those people who has success I even see Lion by XK3R installed please shed some light.

 

Now do the 490's have two boards or was it just a bios update because there are 2 spec sheets from Dell one Global one Europe/UK

 

UK: max supported 5100 Family xeon max 1066 FSB

 

Global: Max supported Dual 5100 series 1333FSB & Quad 5300 series 1333FSB

I tried all different sizes and no luck on the 490. The main problem is when it meet to boot up at the apple logo it just keep restarting from that point. iAtkos S3 went through installation fine, but when it reboot after the installation completed it just wont pass the grey apple logo. I cloned another hackintosh drive and same thing happening. Well I can get iDeneb 1.3 (10.5.5) installed i had prob with 512mb Nvidia card buy 256 ATI oK

 

choose the minimum amount of fixes patches drivers, just see if you get it loaded 1st.

 

Set Bios to defaults then you have to reassign boot CD I got an install like that. with that distro, use the CPUS=1 fix or type it in before

 

I don't know enough to give you more than that sorry

My 490 is now running SL smoothly with a Gigabyte 6450 (AMD Radeon). Picked it up from Newegg with a $20 rebate- though looks like that's over. No extensive testing, but it did stream 1080p from youtube flawlessly.
