iPod causing system lockups

I have a 15GB 3rd generation iPod which i have been having problems running on my Macbook Pro for a while now.

When i plug in my ipod it appears first on the desktop - then when i try to launch iTunes sometimes the window fails to open and itunes sits in the background not responding. Then if i try to force quit the application the whole OS (bar the mouse pointer) freezes and i have to reset it manually by holding down the power button.

Also when the iPod does mount correctly in iTunes, when i try to unmount it, it dissapears from the iTunes source list but the iPod still displays the "Do Not Disconnect" message on it's screen - even after i have quit itunes and put the laptop to sleep.

Thirdly if i have my ipod connected the iPod icon appears on the desktop to show it is mounted. If i then try and launch disk utility it sits forever searching for drives to display. I have to disconnect the ipod and then force quit.

I have updated iPod firmware, restored to factory settings etc still to no avail - has anybody else experienced similar symptoms?

Yeah sometimes when i start a song in a playlist/album it skips to the next one. Thanks for the tip i had forgotten about diagnostic mode altogether. I've started the scan...

...it passed. Hmm maybe i'll try and get it mounted so disk utility can scan it. Could be an excuse for a new one - hopefully some higher capacity nanos will make an appearance soon.

Hmm so disk utility eventually mounts it - trying to do a repair fails with an error and trying to erase the drive causes an i/o error - looks like the disk is screwed then. I even dismantled and re-assembled it to see if anything was obviously wrong - there wasn't.

I guess the question now is do i buy a new 5g now or wait and see if the nano capacity gets upped in september...

new ipods may or may not come out of the WWDC ( though 99% of me says they wont, and they probably will not.) There will of course be a new ipod around christmas time. DO you want to wait that long?

I suppose you could buy an ipod nano now, and a new ipod after they come out. your choise, my ipod photo is still wokring good.

another chiose is to buy a broken 3G or #G harddrive off ebay and replacing it. 3G 's are awesome, you might want to get it wokring, and then buy a new one.

lastly, an alternatlive way to fix this, is to drop the ipod. this may or may not fix it, but for many people it has helped ( i wouldnt try it honestly, but whatever)

it sounds like a hardrive problem, but note that i might be wrong. the fact that it skips songs is pretty wired. connector might be loose, to the hardrive.

good luck, whatever happens

Try hitting the iPod while its running. Also does the iPod play songs. If nothing else try with firewire on a PC/Mac. I have fixed a lot of iPod HDD's by just hitting it.

Also if the HDD passes, then ur disk aint dead. Go into windows, format the disk using diskutility. Now go into Diskmode and restore it.

If still nothing, restore with Windows, then restore with Mac. That replaces the userland (I think).

Well i connected it to my windows partition and tried to open up disk manager. It didn't appear becuase the drivers hadn't installed properly. Reinstalled drivers and restarted then opened up disk manager again. Logical Disk Manager service wouldn't start and reported an error in the event log. Restarted - driver had crapped out again - reinstalled and launched ipod restore - restored the software but failed to format the disk because of an I/O error. Banged iPod off side of my desk until it started beeping, then i banged it again and it stopped beeping. Rebooted into OSX and launched iPod restore from there - again hits an i/o error while trying to format.

The disk is making loud clicking noises so it seems the disk is well and truely b0rked.

clcking noises WAAAAA

those are bad, even if there are NO ipod drivers in windows, it will recognize your ipod as an external device

as a last resort you could use the HP format tool to reformt and stuff. Ive jsut heard of it, people mostly do it when they've f***ed up their IPL install.

other people on this site know what thier talking about, perhaps someone else has a few tips.
