hi guys!

ok, so I'm new to this, I was just wondering if this setup is compatible, and what would be the best install dvd/other method to use? I have access to another mac if needed.

Motherboard: Asrock M3A785GMH/128M

North Bridge AMD 785G Revision 00

South Bridge AMD SB700 Revision 00

processor: AMD Phenom II x2 555 3.2Ghz

graphics: onboard

sound: M Audio 2496 (I assume this should work easily as there is already mac drivers for it?)

ram: 4GB DDR3 1066mhz

harddrive: samsung HD502HJ SATA 500GB

I tried burning iPC 10.5 to a dvd and booting from it, but after typing -v it just rebooted...

thanks in advance for the help!

Which version of iPC 10.5.6 is it the Final Version FFP5 Universal........and did you burn the DVD very slow as you should, at ≤ x4.........?

the readme that came with it says iPC OSx86 10.5.6 Beta.. I didnt realise there was a newer version, im still very much in the researching stage of this and I was evidently getting a bit ahead of myself by even trying to boot from it...

ive also just put another HD in my box.. a 60gb drive from a macbook (so im guessing it should play nice with osx?)

is iPC the right installer for me, if i get hold of the version you mentioned? also I wasnt aware that I should be burning at a slow speed... I looked through a fair few tutorials before trying the install, but none of them mentioned this.

thanks a lot for replying!

What is your integrated GPU chipset?

Before trying to install OS X, I recommend that you remove the M Audio 2496 PCI card

What happens when you boot using -v -f cpus=1 maxmem=2048.....?

chipset is AMD 785G, ATI HD4200 Graphics. I'll have a go with the soundcard disconnected, I tried with the string you entered but got the same results. thanks!

EDIT: I tried with the soundcard disconected, but I got the same results, both just with -v and with the commands you suggested! :rolleyes:

Once you're done installing, drivers for your Delta 2496 can be found here: http://www.audio-evolution.com/drivers/

You cannot use the original drivers from M-Audio, they are for PowerPC macs only - there are no Intel Macs with PCI slots so they never wrote an Intel driver for the M-audio.

thanks a lot, much appreciated, I'll make a note of that for when i actually get past the Darwin loading screen! haha :)

Other options are iATKOS 4a, LawlessPPC 10.5.4, IDeneb, XxX 10.5.6 Universal_Final, Leo4All AMD, iATKOS S3 v2, Ducky-Macosx86-10.5.4 build v.1.1x etc.

How have you set up your BIOS for SATA/ATA?

Try booting with

-v busratio=20 cpus=1 busratiopath=3 noapic maxmem=2048

would any of those options be any better for my setup? i tried the commands you suggested, and they did get me further than before (i got so excited) but unfortunately they seem to reach this point and then stall:

"waiting on <dict ID="0"><key>IOProviderClass</key><string ID="1">IOResources</string><key>IOResourceMatch</key><string ID="2"> (this line goes off the screen here)

ot-uuid-media</string></dict>

I havent set up SATA in my BIOS, as both the HDs i have in there are SATA and they work fine with windows, I wasnt aware I needed to enable it? sorry for my ignorance, I am trying to learn haha

thanks for your help! ive read many tutorials and none of them sem to go into this, just the bits after getting the intaller running!

In your BIOS does the SATA Controller setting have an AHCI mode? If so, enable it.....I am assuming your DVDRW is SATA too.......

Yes it does, i have just enabled it, and my DVD drive is SATA, tried booting with just -v and the commands you posted before, but both are just reaching the same point they were before i enabled AHCI mode.. ;) thanks again for your patience!

Now that you have enabled AHCI mode, try booting with

OK tried that, but still no luck... just restarts and ends up back at "press any key to start up from CD ROM..." etc

Also, since enabling AHCI mode, I'm struggling to get back into windows... ;)

startup repair doesnt seem to be doing anything... uhoh!

Windows 7, i managed to get it to boot back into windows by disabling AHCI mode

I have another HD in there for OSX though, ready and waiting haha

cheers

Re Windows 7 and AHCI mode, see here........this way you can run Windows 7 with AHCI enabled........

Try disabling USB Legacy/Storage Support in BIOS if that is an option and then once you have set Windows 7 to run in AHCI mode and are back in AHCI mode in BIOS, try booting with

-v busratio=20 cpus=1 busratiopath=3 maxmem=2048

ok got windows & playing nice with AHCI now, thanks for that... disabled USB legacy support too (which has stopped my oldschool mac keyboard from working :) small price to pay though!)

AND...

IM IN!

got the Mac OSX Preparing installation screen up so far... so from this point its just working out which kexts and drivers i need? any suggestions?

thanks a lot for your help so far by the way, youve been really patient and i wouldnt have been able to do it without your help... i will be sure to donate to your paypal once im up and running!

That is really good news........glad to help......... :)

OSx86 requires a systematic and patient approach.........even more so with AMD CPU and chipset MOBOs than with nForce chipset + Intel CPU MOBOs....I should know....LOL

Once OS X is fully installed you may be able to re-enable USB legacy support........

ok i followed your instructions, selected the options you suggested, and the install seemed to go ok, but after rebooting, my computer just booted up into windows 7.... thinking this might be due to the order of the hard drives in the BIOS, I put my OSX drive as highest boot priority... now i just get a constant loop of loading Darwinx86>reboot... any ideas on that?

thanks a lot, please tell me if i need to stop asking you for help and start googling! ;)

EDIT: so i managed to get a bit further...

using the list of bootflags you gave me earlier, I managed to get as far as the familiar "in just a few steps, you can register and set up your mac" screen... which to me was incredibly exciting!

however... now ive reached this screen, the PS/2 keyboard doesnt function at all, but with a mac pro usb keyboard(the old style one, came with powermac g4 et al) the up and down arrows work, allowing me to scroll through the available languages, and to my surprise the volume control and eject keys all work, but thats it! also, my usb mouse is working movement wise(x-y) but button clicks are not working! how frustrating! any ideas for this!

thanks a lot Verdant, I wouldnt be this far if it wasnt for your assistance, and I'm sorry to keep asking more from you! it is honestly appreciated!

The best way is Windows 7 and OS X on separate HDDs and then to install EasyBCD 2.0 on Windows 7 and Chameleon on OS X.........

In System Profiler, what do you see under USB.......?

I managed to get past the post install screens and I am now running OSX pretty comfortably! in fact I am posting from OSX on my PC right now! thanks for all your help :huh:

a few teething problems I have encountered though...

I can only boot up with the busratio=20 boot flag, so I added this to com.apple.boot.plist, now it boots flawlessly... but to be honest, I'm not really sure what it does, is it going to pose much of a problem in the long term or anything?

also, spotify seems to hang at the logging in screen, is this a common problem?

adium also doesnt want to work, the icon is covered by a light grey crossed out circle (not really much of a problem, just need to use a different MSN/AIM client i guess!)

I can only select 1024x768 resolution too... is there any way of achieving a higher resolution?

I'm really shocked how stable it all is, I havent had a single kernel panic or anything yet (touch wood!), wireless drivers are a bit strange but once connected they seems to stay connected, so cant really complain!

I managed to get past the post install screens and I am now running OSX pretty comfortably! in fact I am posting from OSX on my PC right now! thanks for all your help :blush:

a few teething problems I have encountered though...

1. I can only boot up with the busratio=20 boot flag, so I added this to com.apple.boot.plist, now it boots flawlessly... but to be honest, I'm not really sure what it does, is it going to pose much of a problem in the long term or anything?

2. also, spotify seems to hang at the logging in screen, is this a common problem?

3. adium also doesnt want to work, the icon is covered by a light grey crossed out circle (not really much of a problem, just need to use a different MSN/AIM client i guess!)

1. The busratio is equivalent to the Bus/Core Ratio, which is the ratio of your CPU’s highest frequency to the FSB i.e. front-side bus frequency.......and since CPU frequency = FSB x Multiplier, the Bus/Core Ratio is equal to the Multiplier......i.e. the busratio is used to specify the CPU's clock multiplier.

The multiplier only affects your CPU frequency for a given FSB frequency, whereas the higher your FSB, the higher your system performance because the FSB links the CPU to the GFX card bus and RAM bus via the Northbridge chipset.......so, having an unlocked multiplier allows you to increase system performance by reducing the multiplier and increasing the FSB frequency yet keeping the same CPU frequency...... and running with a FSB/RAM frequency ratio of 1:1 is recommended for stability.......

The multiplier value is a critical component of the kernel’s timing code, and apart from the FSB frequency, the performance of audio, graphics, USB and other time-critical processes also depends on multiplier value..........

Since OS X does not naturally support AMD CPUs (hence AMD CPUs cannot run vanilla Apple OS X kernels, only patched kernels.....), it needs to be "told" the busratio because it cannot determine the AMD CPU's clock multiplier......

2. and 3. Not sure.......you will need to research via Google

4. In your com.apple.Boot.plist file you can include a line to boot with your display's natural resolution:

In Terminal type,

sudo /Applications/TextEdit.app/Contents/MacOS/TextEdit /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.Boot.plist

which will open your com.apple.Boot.plist file in TextEdit and allow you to directly edit and save changes to your com.apple.Boot.plist file............

Use TextEdit to insert

<key>Graphics Mode</key>
<string>Horizontal pixelsxVertical pixelsxColour Depth@Refresh Rate</string>

"Use your LCD display's natural resolution values"

as shown below (only part of your com.apple.Boot.plist file):

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>

<!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">'>http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">

<plist version="1.0">

<dict>

<key>Graphics Mode</key>

<string>1280x800x32@60</string>

<key>Kernel</key>

Or,

Modify the com.apple.Boot.plist file as follows:

1. Go to the Terminal, and at the $ prompt, type in

sudo nano /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.Boot.plist

2. Enter your password when requested. Use the arrow keys on the keyboard to move the cursor within the Terminal window.

3. Type in (without any spaces anywhere except where there are spaces)

Graphics Mode=1280x800x32@60

between <string> and </string> under <key>Kernel Flags</key>.

as shown below (only part of your com.apple.Boot.plist file):

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>

<!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">

<plist version="1.0">

<dict>

<key>Graphics Mode</key>

<string>1280x800x32@60</string>

<key>Kernel</key>

4. Move the cursor the Terminal window down until it no longer moves, then press Ctrl O and then Enter, to save the modified com.apple.Boot.plist file.

5. Press Ctrl X to Exit and type "exit" at the $ prompt to log out of the Terminal and then close and quit Terminal.
