kyuzumaki Posted November 7, 2010 Share Posted November 7, 2010 I want to play around with my kext files to get the microphone and alc889 audio working (currently using voodoo and my headphone jack) The issue is i've been using my hackintosh for months now and would like not to wreck it. The last time I played around with the audio kexts I caused a kernel panic and ended up having to reinstall. Anyone know of a way to boot a kext while keeping the one that works on the system so I can revert if it causes a KP error? Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Sure firstly get yourself an external USB drive then use the diskutil restore function to take the install you use every day and put in on the external once done install boot loader you use onto the external now it will be a bootable clone of your normal install. Use this external to do all your experimenting on, for the .kexts use something like mv /Extra/Extensions/some.kext /Extra/some.kext.old12345 just put some other memorable name on it so you can tell the version(s) apart. Don't forget to rebuild the Extensions.mkext every time you make a change and to put the old file back you just need to reverse the mv command and rebuild .mkext file from your normal install.
