I have an old 15" Macbook Pro 1,1 with 2.16 GHz cpu and ATI graphics card. I'm pretty sure my logic board has failed. I get no display on the MBP screen or on an external display, but the computer will boot up. I can access the machine via VNC over the network.

I had been cloning my drive via CCC so I do have a bootable external drive to boot from. I would like to boot into the external drive (so that VNC will work) and erase my internal drive before selling it off for parts. I can't get it to boot to that drive. I really don't want to disassemble the machine just to wipe the drive, what a PITA.

I hold the 'Option' key on boot, starting when it chimes, hold it for about 5 seconds, then press the right arrow (assuming there are two choices displayed), then press 'Enter'. Nothing happens. Am I doing it wrong? Any tips on how to wipe my internal drive?
