jotokun Posted October 20, 2010 Share Posted October 20, 2010 My initial reaction is DO NOT WANT! So long as I dont have to use the iOS features thats fine. If I wanted that I'd use my ipod touch. When I'm on a desktop computer, I want to use it as a desktop and not an oversized ipad, which itself is just an oversized ipod touch. What scares me is the possibility of the app store becoming the ONLY source of third party apps. Scottapotamas Posted October 21, 2010 Share Posted October 21, 2010 i also feel that the approach for OSX is more for the 'consumer'. The limitations for the apps submitted are too strict. This release shows a gradual shift from the profesional platform that OSX was (and preOSX for that matter) to the consumer user base. This also resonates with the + 10% marketshare stuff and xxmillion iOS devices. In other words, power users will be limited. Consumers and new OSX users will be brainwashed into thinking that the AppStore is the only place for apps. Because of this shift, less powerful software will be developed, because who would want to develop software that isn't on the market and easily accessible to everyone In all, this gradual (5+ years) is worrying for most of us on this forum, as pretty much all of us are classified as power users. What I really fear is that development will shift to the consumer side, where more money is, and leave power users crippled in the long run. (that said, many of us could make buckets of money!!!) Steve has already told that app store is not the only way to download the apps but he thought it would be the best place to discover new apps. Regarding the some kind of restrictions that Apple might put on the developers, I think it is inevitable and quite a right thing to do. You really don't expect Apple to approve every apps that've been submitted. So the question is how much restrictions are we talking about? I have a full hd display and often thought that OSX and of course Windows can't get the most out of it and that's why I really like the full screen app feature. Other features that'd been mentioned also are beautiful. Mission Control, switching between apps with a gesture etc. Of course, we have to see the final build of the Lion and other features to judge if it really is worth calling "Lion". I am surprised it took them this long. To me the only big thing that was announced was the Mac App Store. Consider that this is going to make crazy profits for Apple as people will simply love the convenience of the service. If Apple makes crazy profits from Mac Apps that means they will pay more attention to Mac Hardware and that is good for us. This also means people will ultimately pay less for their software just as Apple's other software download services have dropped the prices of their respective media. Lower priced commercial Mac apps is a good thing. The Mac developers will make more money as they will not have to deal with physical media, so more developers will be attracted to the Mac. This will be yet another nail in the coffin for physical optical media. I completely welcome that trend. Ultimately everything will be downloaded. I look forward to the day that everything on a Mac is totally solid state. If the price of flash media drops dramatically people will be using SDHC and other flash based media as a replacement for blueray and other high capacity optical media. The zealot like Apple fanatics that I've dealt with (who claim I had all things Apple, lol) like to call Apple products "appliances". That means no modding, no changing, no customization...you have absolutely no control over what you bought. I've been waiting for the App store for the Mac to happen for a long time, and the only reason they don't restrict where you will get software for YET is because OS X is a desktop OS and desktop OSes for the most part have been open platforms. Because of this, there would be a backlash. All we have to do is give it a few years and I expect to see the Mac Store the ONLY place one will be able to get their software. Maybe not with Lion but with the next OS after that. Apple has enough "dull bob" consumers to out number the rest of us by 100 fold. Apple could easily accommodate people like us, but they don't want to. They have no need to because if we step aside, 10 more people will take our place. Hence why the Global Market killed the Free Market. Hell, it doesn't even matter what the laws say either. The FFC says jailbreaking is legal but the "contract" you get from Apple overrides the law because the courts deem it a "negotiated, personal contract". This is why, Danielmramos, touting the end of physical media is a bad thing in our society right now. There is only really ONE company that treats consumers right when it comes to digital works. That is Stardock. The rest, are just predatory, arrogant, greedy business people that care nothing about our rights and only care about their overly insane large profit margins. The physical medium is that has kept businesses from enacting these ways years ago, they couldn't control the product once it was shipped to the retail store. Today, that is no longer the case. We've seen how Steve Jobs reacts to things. We have read his words and seen how he thinks. He might not hate us all "personally" but I'm sure he does think we are immoral, unethical people because we use OS X on the same PC hardware they sell, just without the "Logo & Apple Tax". Steve Jobs has forgotten his roots and the fact that his ENTIRE FAME AND FORTUNE is because at one time, he would be doing exactly the same thing as we are doing here today. Nothing bad, wrong, and only marginally illegal because of over reaching laws enacted by specific industries to protect their profit margins. When it comes to Lion itself, there isn't really anything that I see that I would need or use. Even if I went out and bought a magic mouse or track pad, the features added so far are rather meh. It seems that most of what Apple is producing software-wise is just something a middle aged, yuppie housewife would use while she sips her wine in the middle of the afternoon because she has nothing else to do. Things that easily impress those on the lower end of the tech knowledge scale but do not much else. Though, one more prediction, at some later date, I don't expect anyone being able to get the Mac OS via a disk. It might be with Lion and the Mac Store that you won't be able to get the standalone DMG updates either. I just don't understand why Apple dislikes us so much. We either spend money on the OS, thus allows us to BUY MORE SOFTWARE (like from the app stores) than have us not buy anything at all. I say, in many ways, it is a disservice to the shareholders. lol Maybe it is the fact that we know there is no such thing as a "PC vs Mac". Apple will do what Apple will do. I said Apple would eventually drop physical optical media and everything will ultimately be downloaded. I do not think that means you will not be able to have a locally installable version of the OS; however, it will be on a small flash drive and not a DVD. I don't think S. Jobs likes us either, but we are too small for him to give a frak about. One thing in our favor is that the Mac App Store will actually be more of a reason not to give a {censored} about us. They are going to get our money eventually through the app store and they know it. If they wanted us all dead in the water by now they could have done it a long time ago. Oh, and even if you don't buy their hardware you will all pay the Apple tax. The tax will come in the form of 30% off of the top of whatever we buy from the Mac App Store. I don't like very much the apple store but i'm not warried about the multi touch gesture... in the end i believe that will be the same as on snow leopard. Not gonna happen. Key features of Lion: New ways of switching between apps faster. Better multitouch interaction. Full screen views. Resize windows from any corner. New scrollbars. I would love the feature where apps can resume where they were last, like in iOS. my hackintosh boot in 3 secs with a low grade kingston 64gb V series gen 1 with newer SSD, our hacktintosh should make use of this feature a lot I love the current interface.
