Apple LED Cinema Display 27 inch on a Hackintosh

Hey guys,

I've been researching for a while, but I really didn't find any reliable info about this. Is it possible to get the new 27inch Apple LED Cinema Display to fully work with Hackintosh? By fully, I mean on integrated webcam and speakers that works. I currently have 8800GT with two dual-DVI outputs, which means I'll need to get mini-displaylink to dual dvi adapter too. What do you think, will the adapter do the job flawlessly or shall I need to get either GeForce 120 or some ATI card with display link out? Please, let me know if you have tried this!

Thanks a lot!

Yup. It work. I have my 24" sitting right here. Running off my 8800 GTX 512. The thing is, you need to buy a mini displayport to DVI converter. I have the Gefen mini displayport to DVI. What i'm having a problem with is trying to get it to work with my new video card (470GTX) for some reason when I try using my 470 gtx the monitor isn't being detected so it wont turn on. I don't know if 470s are supported by the monitor or maybe its my adapter that doesn't support the card. But, it does work fine with the 8800 GT the camera and sound are all USB so they work fine too. :)

Really? Wow, that's great! Thanks. I hope I'm not rude, but would you mind uploading screenshot of System Profiler, just the display section? I plan to buy the new 27 inch version, and since it's really huge amount of money I don't want to make make wrong choice about it : )

As for your problem with 470GTX, do you use EFI strings (or just graphics enabler with chameleon?) or kext? Also, 470GTX has three video ports DVI, DVI and HDMI, right? Try switching the ports, and most of all try attaching two monitors. I had a number of issues using EFI strings with my old 8600GT card, starting from no display picture to no QE / CI. But all of that got solved with additional LCD and switch to Snow Leopard. Hope it helps!

Thank you!

My 470 gtx only has two dvi ports and its not the card its the monitor that doesnt turn on.

I have tried the, using a dvi port monitor to boot to SL and then connect the cinema display, but I don't want to have to do that every time I start the computer.

Cheers about the screenshot ; ) I didn't know that the 24 inch Apple LED's are 1920x1200 res. I thought that they have higher res. Only reason why I want to buy the 27 inch LED is because it has 2560x1440 res. Yes, my current 1920x1080 is just too small for me.

About your graphic card, I do understand that graphic card is working. I suppose you tried plugging in monitor on to the second DVI adapter?

Thanks!

yeah I did try that.

Apparently the Gefen mini displayport to dvi doesnt support the 27" ACD yet.

Nah, after thinking about it... I realized that it's cheaper and more efficient that I get GeForce 210 too (or some similar graphic card). Converters cost about 100 USD or more (I found one for 200 USD!!!). This won't happen soon, probably in December. But I will post photos! : )

Thanks ; )

I would like to ask a question from you: Is the brightness control work with hackintosh? I would like to buy a led cinema display 27 for my hackintosh mashine (gigabyte ep45-ud3lr + snow 10.6.4 kakewalk). I am planning to buy an ati 5650 card with display port, and in this way you don't need to buy expensive coverter box, a displayport to minidisplayport should be enough. However I am not 100% sure of this procedure. Is there anybody in the insanely mac community who can tell:

hackintosh + ati 5xxxx with displayport can drive apple led cinema display 2x over displayport to minidisplayport cable????

Has no one tried to use an Apple LED Cinema Display 27" on a Hackintosh??? :gun:

Basically I have a Palit nVidia GeForce GTX470 with a DisplayPort. I want to boot up a Hackintosh with the new ACD27". If I install the official "LED Cinema Display Software Update 1.0" in OSX86 from here:

Not that I've got one, but this link to tonymacx86's forum may help.

The way I understand is the new 27" ACDs will not work through miniDisplay adapter and will not work without Apple branded video card.

People seem to be using OEM Apple ATI Radeon 5770's from appleStore in their hackPro's. Rumor us that ACD sends a signal to recognize Apple vid, perhaps. Read the thread more thoroughly as it requires some plist mods if I remember, but full success with webcam and speakers(sort of).

This may all be untrue as I've not tested nor do I have hackpro
