i built the lifehackerhackintosh with the same parts used in the guide and have it all backed up to a external 500gb drive as a time machine. can I restore that time machine image to my new mac mini i just bought? or is there some kinda compatibility issue?

No don't do it..

The way I would do it is

Clone Hackintosh to external drive using Carbon Copy Cloner (it's free)

Hook up external HD to Mac mini and use migration assistant to copy what folders settings etc you choose.
