My new hackintosh build - tell me what you think

Hi,

 

First time poster long time reader, great forum here.

 

I've been reading for a while about a hackintosh and have finally decided to take the plunge and build a hackintosh.

 

The main reasons for building a hackintosh/ pc are;

 

General bits and pieces on the mac - web surfing, media storage (i tunes) aperture.

Gaming on windows - when I've got spare time! Also used for Microsoft office when I have to work from home.

 

I've spec'd my build up as follows; (hopefully this picture displays ok)

 

 

 

Can you guys let me know what you think of the above build for the tasks which I've mentioned.

You do realise you've selected a socket 775 CPU to fit onto a socket 1366 motherboard?

 

I haven't looked specifically at your motherboard but if it was made in the last 10 years, I'm pretty sure it would have LAN on board.

 

First go to the Apple site, it gives you an idea of what is inside iMacs (i5, i7, discrete ATI graphics).

Go to the motherboard manufacturer's website and study the user manual for any motherboard that you intend to buy. You will also need to know what chipsets it has (AUDIO, LAN, SATA) and if there are drivers available (vanilla or hacked).

 

Some i5 CPUs have VGA built into the CPU, some don't. According to the Apple site, all iMacs have discrete graphics, ATI RADEON HD 4670, 5670 or 5750.

 

As for "will the machine suit your purpose?" Depends on what games you play, there are many benchmarks available on the net.

 

It's very time consuming to spec the system properly, there are hundreds of questions that need answering. I don't think you are the first person to try this so there should be lots of threads about it on the net. Hopefully you will enlighten us when you get your system up and running.

Setup looks good except CPU won't work in that motherboard. Processor of choice would be an i7 920 or 930. The motherboard is well known and won't need an extra NIC. You can also use the Kakewalk boot CD to install (search these forums for Kakewalk). Very fast, very easy. Beware the difference between v1 and v2 of these boards, something about the audio not working in v2 but the problem might be resolved.
