Problem with Snow Leopard install - Can someone please help?

I bought the $30 10.6.3 disc and used a friend's imac (10.6.4) to create the .dmg and put it on a 16gb flash drive. I then ran the EP45UD3P Snow Leopard install package that LifeHacker suggested (http://cache.gawker.com/assets/images/lifehacker/2009/10/EP45UD3P_Snow_Leopard.zip) and installed it onto the usb flash drive. When I try to install on a brand new bare 1TB WD Hard Drive it shows apple logo then immediately throws this error message: "You need to restart you computer. Hold down the Power button until it turns off, then press the Power button again." And that's all it will do. It will not even attempt to install.

My hardware is:

DFI P35-T2R Motherboard

Intel Q6600 quad core

XFX 5770 video card

Asus DVDr

1TB Western Digital Hard Drive

8Gb Gskill ddr2

Any suggestions? Thanks for the help in advance!

I would suggest downloading the iAtkos S3 v2 DVD image and burn it to a disc. You can install directly from this. You can find this dvd image by doing a simple google search.

Your hardware should work with the vanilla kernel, you might just need to select a few custom kext's during the install process.

Once you get to the screen asking which drive to install to you'll see a "Customize" button in the bottom left. Click it and select these options.

  • Change the bootloader to "Chameleon v2 RC4"
  • Select "Drivers > Main Hardware > SATA/IDE > JMicron SATA/IDE"
  • Select "Drivers > Network > Wired > Intel > Intel Gigabit"

The biggest problem is going to be your graphics card. The ATI cards are notoriously not supported by Mac for some reason. I have a 5870 that I would love to put into my Mac but cannot as there are no kext's available for it. I have heard of people getting the 5770 working, but you'll have to look into that on your own.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the replies! I will try those suggestions. I guess i will need to make that boot disc on an apple? Also, would a 8800GT card work better? I have one in another computer that I could swap... And when I think about it, that other computer has:

i7 920

asus p6t deluxe

8800 gt

12gb ddr3

so if i try it in that computer, would I use the same suggestions in this thread on that setup as well? Or would I need to do something different?
