lazybon3
Hello, did you try: 1. disable AppleGraphicsPowerManagement.kext >> System Profiler > Software > Extensions >> see if AppleGraphicsPowerManagement is loaded. if it is loaded, go to /System/Library/Extensions/ and rename it to AppleGraphicsPowerManagement.kext.disable reboot your System. this at least worked for me for Cards that didn't perform that good. EDIT: For those who do not use Terminal to rename files, make sure that .disable (or .whatever) is the new File Extension. 2. The other thing that slows down NVidia Cards for me was using DVI>VGA Adapter So maybe you should get rid of the Adapter if you are using one. Maybe this works for you too, for me it did. gl
Clatoo
Hello All, Lazybon3 : Thanks for the tip about the .kext, it definitely improved my setup by a sizable margin. However, for the rest of you guys, the biggest improvement was achieved through the use of another install process. 1) First "poor graphics" process : This was using Kekawalk + bootloader + 10.6.4 + bootloader 2.2 (from kakewalk as well) This gave me everything working out of the box, except for the poor openGL support. 2) New process : This was using #####-supported + 10.6.4 + ##### with DSDT of the net for my motherboard. This basically gave me a 50% increase in bench results, but I am yet to recover from lost 889a sound, a well known issue associated with 10.6.4. 3) Lazybon3's trick gave me the final edge in openGL. A few exemple of the changes between setups 1, 2 and 3 : Cinebench 11,5 : 9 fps -> 16 fps -> 24 fps OpenMark : 12,000 -> 20,000 -> 30,000 + (over 30 millions triangles @ 12 fps, so sweet ) Xbench : About double score, funny thing is no much change between setup 2 and 3. I hope this helps, I'll try to get the sound back and redo a clean install once I am happy with everything. I'll document it here afterwards. Thanks again for your help Lazybon3 Regards, Clatoo
pirloui
Hello All,A few exemple of the changes between setups 1, 2 and 3 : Cinebench 11,5 : 9 fps -> 16 fps -> 24 fps Good and worthy increase; but stil not enough: 24fps in CB that is a GT240 in Windows.. Did you try the different MacPro versions? MP3.1 and MP 4.1 give different power save states to the video card. It seems your card is now proportionally as slow as mine. (GT240 gives 12.3fps is MacOS.)

I am currently spoofing a Mac Pro 3.1 and no change. I think that if you spoof a 4.1, you loose on graphic performance, but I can try. I haven't done the cinebench test since changing to Mac Pro 3,1 though, so back in a while... To be honest, I am really happy with my setup as it is ! Edit 1 : No change with MacPro 3.1 Edit 2 : No boot with 4.1, I had to -x -f twice to recover my Mac Regards
blase
If I delete AppleGraphicsPowerManagement.kext, my gtx285 is no longer throttled. Galaxies.app benchmark shoots from 85 to 307. lazybon3
If I delete AppleGraphicsPowerManagement.kext, my gtx285 is no longer throttled. Galaxies.app benchmark shoots from 85 to 307. But eventually the card overheats due to no fan control. Any solutions? At least in my Case automatic Fan Control still works when i disable AppleGraphicsPowerManagement.kext. When I start any 3D Benchmark i can hear and see the GPU-Fan speeding up, so i don't think that disabling this file can kill my GPU. If you are really afraid that this could happen to your Card, just reenable AppleGraphicsPowerManagement.kext until there is another Solution for this and stick with the bad Results for a while. I think any good GPU should survive running fulltime on full clock speed. So maybe you should just open your Case and look if at least the FAN of the GPU is spinning up while Benchmarking, if it doesn't stick with AppleGraphicsPowerManagement.kext until you find another Solution for this. I don't know if there are any GPU Temperature and Fanspeed Monitoring tools for OS X, but you could try to find something like that to make sure your GPU doesn't overheat. gl bye

quattrofx
Hallo People! After playing with different settings, found out that my System works best with the System identifier: iMac11,1 Snow 10.6.5 64Bit i7 860 2,8GHz P55A UD3 Rev.1 Bios F9 8GB DDR3 1333 RAM INNO3D GTX 285 1GB But I have just built another similar System: Snow 10.6.5 64Bit i7 870 3GHz P55A UD3 Rev.1 Bios F11 8GB DDR3 1600 RAM Zotac GTX 285 1GB With this system I experienced the same problem like the others - Half of Cinebench scores: 17,36 Again played with diff. settings and came to these results: System identifier: iMac11,1 17,36 System identifier: MacPro 4.1 17,36 System identifier: MacPro 3.1 30,29 Very important info: It is not enough just to change the Syntax “MacPro 3.1” in your smbios.plist You need to change also the SMProductID: F42C88C8 Cheers QuattroFX
mitch_de
Thanks ! Can you please post your also working (on other pc) iMac11,1 smbios.plist values (SMProductID,...) please ? I ask because you said to use ModelID (Macprox,y , iMacx,y) may not reach for suceess of that problems, also the right SMProduktID is needed). I dont know the right Imac11,1 values and used iMac5,1 values with IMac11,1 ModelID

MacPro5.1 F227BEC8 The Mac Pro "Quad Core" 2.8 (Mid-2010/Nehalem) is powered by a single 2.8 GHz Quad Core 45-nm Xeon W3530 (Nehalem) processor with a dedicated 256k of level 2 cache for each core and 8 MB of "fully shared" level 3 cache. Via custom configuration, it also can be equipped with a single3.2 GHz Quad Core "Nehalem" Xeon (W3565) processor or a single 3.33 GHz Six Core "Westmere" Xeon (W3680) processor. By default, it is configured with 3 GB of 1066 MHz DDR3 ECC SDRAM, a 1 TB (7200 RPM, 32 MB cache) 3Gb/s Serial ATA hard drive, an 18X dual-layer "SuperDrive" and an ATI Radeon HD 5770 graphics card with 1 GB of GDDR5 memory. MacPro5.1 F227BEC8 Offered as a custom configuration of the Mac Pro "Quad Core" 2.8 (2010/Nehalem), but with significant technical differences, the Mac Pro "Six Core" 3.33 (Mid-2010/Westmere) is powered by a single 3.33 GHz Six Core 45-nm Xeon W3680 (Westmere) processor with a dedicated 256k of level 2 cache for each core and 12 MB of "fully shared" level 3 cache. By default, it is configured with 3 GB of 1333 MHz DDR3 ECC SDRAM, a 1 TB (7200 RPM, 32 MB cache) 3Gb/s Serial ATA hard drive, an 18X dual-layer "SuperDrive" and an ATI Radeon HD 5770 graphics card with 1 GB of GDDR5 memory. Core Xeon W3530 Mac Pro "Six Core" 3.33 (Server)3.33 GHz 6 Core Xeon W3680 Some MacPro3.1 and MacPro4.1 models may vary: Although the "Early 2009/Nehalem" models look practically the same externally as the "Early 2008" models, there are major technical differences. The 64-bit "Nehalem" architecture is substantially faster and supports "Hyper-Threading" -- which "allows two threads to run simultaneously on each core" (so MacOS X recognizes eight "virtual cores" on this model) -- and "Turbo Boost" -- which "automatically boosts the processor speed based on workload" (so if an application is only using one of the four cores it will automatically increase the speed of the core in use and turn off the unused cores). It also replaces the frontside bus with a new "QuickPath Interconnect" (QPI) system described as a "bidrectional, point-to-point connection" that provides "quick access to the disk, I/O, and other Mac Pro subsystems". Other changes include four PCIe 2.0 slots (instead of two PCIe and two PCIe 2.0 slots), four Firewire "800" ports (instead of two Firewire "400" and "800" ports), and a redesigned interior case with the processors and memory on a removable "tray". hugeschnauzer
This really puzzles me. I changed my GTX 260 to GTX 285 and am only getting about half the OpenGL performance. I tried installing the Nvida driver, but it didn't make a difference. Why would the 285 perform way slower than a 260? It benchmarks fine under Windows 7. Any ideas? Thanks. -Tom Change to MAc 3,1 and be happy
