Black screen after 10.6.4 update

Hi. Recently I installed Mac OS X Snow Leopard retail with the help of MyHack Installer on my PC. I already had 10.5.6 Leopard (iDeneb 1.6 lite version) on my external hard drive (and it is still there, in case I need it), but I decided to install Snow Leopard to my internal hard drive...

So, there multiple things that don't work, but that's not the question for now... I wanted to install XCode, but it asked me for 10.6.4 update. So, I went do Software Update, downloaded 10.6.4 Combo Update, and installed.

All went fine. After reboot, my system was not booting. It didn't appear the grey screen with the apple logo, just a black screen... And then it restarted.

So, booted in verbose mode to see what happened. It said something like this:

VGA compatible controller : Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03) (controller not available)

But this is strange, since the Graphics always worked well, on Leopard and Snow Leopard... It's just an issue after the update, and I don't know why.

That's why I'm here asking for help... I really would like to boot into my dear Snow Kitty again, to test some more kexts, and such. :P

My specs:

Compaq website specs

Hardinfo detailed hardware report

I also have a more "general" topic here, with questions about my install:

Can you help me, please?

Thank you,

Type "Intel GMA X3100" in the search box above, there is a lot of information available here already.

X3100 is the marketing name for your on-board video. Its vendor/device ID is 8086:2a02 - this will help when searching for possible solutions.

Lots of info in this thread (going by post dates, Snow Leopard info would be towards the end) : http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=71784

In that topic, it says some things about Snow Leopard, but they are not the problem that I have (at least, the description they say is not mine), and using the search engine, I only find Leopard stuff, and my Leopard was totally OK.

Also, I googled a lot, a nothing relevant comes up except my own topic... Am I a unique case? O_o

And thanks for your help!

Maybe I'm not searching correctly, or ignoring something useful, I don't know... Stupid update. What can I do to boot my "Mac" again? :(

Well what have you got to lose by trying what has worked for somebody else on a computer similar to yours and updating to 10.6.4? I would hazard a guess that if you can get 10.6.3 working , you can also get 10.6.4 working.

The iAtkos would be my first choice if I had to do a package install.

We have the same gfx card. that is x3100. iAtkos S3 is a good choice if you want to upgrade to 10.6.4, it installs 10.6.3 and you have to update to 10.6.4 via software update. I use EFI string to load the gfx correctly which can be selected at custom install menu. Updated to 10.6.4 without any problems.

I installed iAtkos S3 V2 on both my laptop (Intel GMA X3100) and PC (ATI Radeon X1650) .. 10.6.4 upgrade went flawless in the PC and crached my whole laptop and had to reinstall it again to 10.6.3 ... there somethin wrong in 10.6.4 for sure that doesn't make it run on all devices and I believe it's a different kernel.
