i've read various things that said you can only partition so much for boot camps windows partition to work. i actually have no interest in the mac os and wonder if i can just partition as little as possible for it, allocating most to windows.

Hell dude, why did you buy a mac if you have no intrest in runing OS X?!?

I suppose you could delete the OSX partition when you are seting up windows by formating all thje drives. but dont ask me how you are going to get OS X back if you want it

Yes you can. Once you have the 1.0.1 firmware installed, you can delete all the partitions after booting from the XP CD and create 1 partition and install windows. Why you would do that, I have no idea.

actually, it might seem like a silly thing to do, but its not for me. I own an immense amount of pc based software and need to purchase a new laptop. If I'm dropping 4k on a laptop, I really have no interest right now in spending another 4k on new software for it.

I actually am not concerned with the look of the laptop (as proof, i was also looking at thinkpads), but the screen on the macbook pro makes it possible for me to truly make the laptop a mobile work station (i'm in graphics). I did also look at Vaios and Alienware.

Since I plan to have the laptop for 2-3 years before I replace it, I imagine that over the next few years I will transition my software to mac as new releases of CS, etc are released. I can at any time reformat the computer to give OS a bigger partition.

I haven't purchased the laptop yet, which is why I'm here. Attempting to make an informed decision BEFORE i spend the money. Ideally, I would wait for Leopard.

But since I don't work in any program that begins with "i" and I need my computer to be a workhorse while away from my office and all my software is PC based, it makes sense that to begin with, I should partition as much as possible to Windows.

part of my reason for posting here is to see if that is a reasonable solution, or if it is not and I need to simply purchase a PC laptop this go around and wait a few years to go back to Mac.

Dude, not trying to call you an idiot, but jeez if you wanted a big screen the MBP wasn't what you needed. You just wasted your money. Dell has laptops that have 20.1 inch monitors. You only buy a Mac to run OSX. *sigh* :(

not trying to call you an idiot, but read the post first.

i HAVE NOT bought a MBP yet. that is the point of this. to do research before buying. that said, i really don't care about the SIZE of the screen. Mac lcds are different than lcd screens from any other company. They allow for something called pantone matching, and have better resolution.

honestly, you guys jump down people's throats. its not terribly inviting to bring people over from "the dark side".

I was in the same boat as you. I LOVED the llok of the MacBook Pro. Its the best looking laptop out there. The problem was I am a Windows user. Once bootcamp was released, that was my IN :) . I see where your comming from but I just don't understand why you would remove OS X. Its nice to have both and by having both gives you an oppurtinity to learn OS X. It really is a nice OS.

*sigh* Your first post doesn't mention you HAVEN'T bought it yet. Make your statements better and clearer so that there is no confusion. I wasn't the only one who read your post as such. Ask your question better next time, so no confusion.

Jump down your throat? Maybe so, but IF you bought a MBP for XP you would be the dumbest person I have seen on the net in a while. The ONLY reason to get a Mac is to run OSX natively. Nothing else. Common sense tells you this. Dell has a killer XPS laptop with a 20.1 inch lcd. Look into that.

You can't blame us for freaking out. It would be like buying a Harley and just rolling it down a hill and not "riding" it.

id have to agree, while the mbp screen may be sweet, it doesnt justify the exorbitant price. im not in the graphics line and i hold no bias against windows but i do think that if you are buying a mac laptop, it should be used to run os x (the reason why people buy a mac). or else, there is really no point. im not sure about how much better the mbp's screen is from regular pc laptops but im sure it differs from manufacturer to manufacturer. there are many laptop manufacturers out there that sell well priced laptops with nice screens. i suggest you check out www.notebookreview.com and see the laptops they review. they have a huge database where they post reviews for many laptops (from many sites).

anyways, here are some of the high res bright screen laptops that i know of

samsung x60 (1.66 - 2.16 core duo, x1600 256, 15.4 wsxga) - 23.9mm thick

dell e1505 (1.66 - 2ghz core duo, x1400, 15.4 wsxga)

dell e1705 (1.66-2.16ghz core duo, 7900gs, 17 wuxga)

asus w3j (1.66 - 2.16ghz core duo, x1600 256, 14 wxga)

asus a8jm (1.66 - 2.16, 7600go 512, 14 wxga)

asus w2jb (1.66 - 2.16, x1600 256, 17 wxga+)

hp nc8430 (1.66- 2.16, x1600 256, 15.4 wsxga)

hp dv8000 (1.66-2.16, 7600go 256, 15.4 wsxga or wxga+ ultra bright)

dell precision m90 (1.66-2.16, quadro fx2500m, 17 wuxga)

good luck searching.

honestly, it sounds like you guys have got it in your head that pc's are cheap.

there certainly ARE cheap pcs, but you can't be a graphic designer with one. the cost is the same whether i end up with a mac or pc. to be fair, its pretty hard to get a pc with 7200 rpm.

and the screen isn't just bigger... who cares about that. mac screens are actually made differently, and can pantone match and don't have that evil backlit look that screws with print files.

there are lots of reasons to go with a mac that just can not be solved by getting a pc, regardless of cost. its why i'm seriously bummed about leopard not coming out til spring. i need something sooner than that.

SO. i'll see. I'm still looking, but I might well end up with a mac.. who knows?
