mykweb
Hi all I have been reading this site for a while, and finally got my hands on a pc that I can use for osx86 phew I have a Dell Optiplex 745, 4gb ram, 500GB hard disk and a nVidia card (unsure of the model) I have managed to do the Kalyway 10.5.3 update just now. and its running good. All hardware still working, however I would like to go up to 10.5.8 or 10.5.6 Is there an easy installer package for this, When I done the kernal update I chose the Vanilla_Kernal 9.3 Hope this helps cheers Mike

Gringo Vermelho
Is there an easy installer package for this No. Search the forums and read a lot. At least your PC can run the Vanilla kernel, that means your chances of success are good. It's easier to update OS X on a "Vanilla capable" PC. To improve your chances of getting help, don't say "I have a Dell Multiplex 643", this implies that you are too lazy to look up the specs for your PC and you want others to do the work for you. Demonstrating that you have no idea what components are in your computer and that you have arrived at 10.5.3 purely by luck will make most knowledgeable people ignore your post. Don't take this personal, that's just how it is and that's the reason why so many posts go unanswered around here. Make it easy to help you, provide as much (relevant*) information as possible. *It's not relevant what brand or color your PSU and case is and how many fans your PC has. It's not relevant that your keyboard is a "full 102-key ergonomic blabla" or that your PC came with Windows ZY Profesional with a 1 year warranty against manufacturing defects - in other words, don't just copy the specs page from Dell's website (yes, many people do it). You can use a System Information tool such as Lavalys Everest or LSPCI to get to the meat and potatoes. Relevant information is: Motherboard chipset - South- and Northbridge. If you're using SATA or PATA drives CPU family and model PS2 or USB keyboard/mouse Exact model name of sound, LAN and video card is also important but not always crucial for getting an update to work. Which patches you selected in 'customize' before installing/updating Kalyway Bootloader name and version Also post what you have tried already (this shows initiative and can motivate experienced users to help you), what worked and what didn't work. Here are two posts that contain some useful information, some of it you can't use since you're running the vanilla kernel but it might help shed some light on things anyway. I encourage you to read all of it. http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=209192 http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=209712
mykweb
lol cheers Most dell 745's have the same spec. The only thing dell changed was the processor and memory. anyway spec are Intel® Q965 (ICH8) Express Chipset Intel core 2 Duo 1.87 GHz Soundcard is disabled USB Soundblaster live 24 bit Hard Disk is set in Legacy mode Western Digital 500gb Sata 2 hd 3 com network card Onboard card disabled On the initial installation of Kalyway 10.5.2 I left all at default, the only additional was the Nvidia Drivers and I selected the Vanilla Kernal 9.2 The 10.5.3 update was a peach, nice and easy thought maybe there was another similer one out there cheers Mike
Gringo Vermelho
I've edited my previous post a couple of times. Try to follow Beerkex'd guide (link above) and update your bootloader first. Fabio provides installer packages for the latest SVN versions of Chameleon 2.0 RC5 in the Chameleon 2.0 RC5 thread on the new releases board. Chameleon is much more than just a bootloader, in the past we had to use many modified kernel extensions and other system files to accomplish what the Chameleon bootloader can do today. Running Kalyway on a modern PC is kind of like if you were running Windows 95 - the way OS X is patched to work on a PC on an old distro like Kalyway is archaic and complicated and you are lucky if it survives an OS version update at all. Get rid of the modified AppleSMBIOS.kext you're using, replace it with a vanilla one (from 10.5.3 since that's what you're running) and implement /extra/smbios.plist instead. If you have any "Time Machine Fix" applied to IONetworkingFamily.kext, try to eliminate it (replace kext with unmodified version) and use EthernetBuiltIn=y in /Extra/com.apple.Boot.plist instead. You can read more about how to do that in the Chameleon bootloader documentation (google "Chameleon Documentation"). Also I recommend you install "Pacifist" (google it) and "Apple Development tools", or at least IORegistryExplorer and PlistEditor, those are invaluable tools when it comes to troubleshooting and editing files. Apple Development tools (XCode) can be download for free at Apple's website (you need to register) or you can find them on an original OS X install DVD. These are things you can work on without having to worry about wrecking your current install and it'll help you get closer to Vanilla OS X so that you can finally run an OS update without having to worry about losing functionality. Kalyway is very old, you need to move on to more modern ways to do these things, this will greatly simplify updating and keeping your Hackintosh running.
