Is there any way of knowing exactly what kexts I need for my setup?

My install seems to go ok, but I'm hunting in pecking to find the right combo of kexts.

Try booting with -v busratio=24

I used that method for the initial booting of the install disk and it worked fine. Seemed to install perfectly.

However, when I do that from the menu, it runs a few pages of code, then flips to a black screen and hangs there.

Good Lord!

I installed OS X by setting my DVD as the master boot and i sjust sorta worked

However, long story short, I just got the windows7 drive working and deleted the sleepEnabler kext then rebooted with the ##### Supported disk in the drive, then used the -v busratio=24 code and it worked!
