DYING to get Snow Leopard on my Asus 1005HA

Hey all,

So I really want to get SL onto my Asus eeepc 1005HA. I've seen others do it and it works great but maybe I'm just stupid...so read on please.

Here's what I've got. A retail SL .ISO, a 4 GB flash drive, a 16 GB SD card (yes, bootable, just tried with a DOS image), and Win7 installed. I know how to partition.

Now - what's all this {censored} about Netbookinstaller and netbootmaker? When are they run, what do they do, and are they the same thing? I have Netbookinstaller on my 4 GB flash drive (and it boots into Chameleon when I boot with it plugged in) but I don't know why I need it, if I do.

I'm assuming that I have to get my SD card to boot with the SL .ISO I have once it's 'burned' to the SD card, and install from there. Am I right? Seems that I can't get it to boot from that though.

Thing is, I only have a Windows PC to work with and no external DVD drive. But I have THE drive to get this thing working. :o

So please help me if you can, I REALLY want to get this thing working (or even installed, haha).

Thanks!!!

-Brennan

PS - I'd LOVE to keep Win7 installed since OSX won't be my primary operating system just yet. Easy dual boot, I know, but wanted to mention it in case it changes much.

Alright so I got the ISO to boot and got to the Mac install screen. Got to Disk Utility and tried to install to my hard drive but alas it won't work cause Windows is installed there. It shows the two partitions but, cause it's MBR, it won't mount either.

I know about the OSinstall.mpkg and Osinstall hack but it's not working. I've changed out the files in my ISO and it's STILL bitching about how "you can't resize the partition on this disk because it uses the master boot record".

Anyone? I appreciate the forum but why do you force us to post here if no one's going to help?

I need to keep Windows installed. I have 1 NTFS Windows 7 partition, 1 NTFS Storage partition, and 40 GB of free space.

Please?

Thanks!

Not sure if the MBR trick you are referring to allows you to resize an MBR disk though; it might just be for installing OS X. Resizing is easy; grab any linux live cd and run gparted (easy to install if its not included already). Or just grab a gparted live cd; a live cd with nothing but gparted on it to do hard disk operations. Resize your drive then go back to your installer and go from there.

(You can boot a live cd from a thumbdrive, or in your case an SD card. Just google for a guide, I think ubuntu has a pretty good one)

Thanks geiman! Alright well that's exactly what I did already. I resized my "Storage" partition and made it a lot smaller, and left about 40 GB of free space. Disk Utility won't even let me do anything with the free space!

Edit: I have a 16 GB SD card, a 2 GB SD card, and a 4 GB flash drive.

Any ideas?

Edit 2: I was thinking I might have to format the free space into a partition in order to get OSX to use it, but if it's still grayed out then what do you recommend?

Thanks everyone, really wanna get this working before school starts! ;)

Yes you need to make it a partition. If you just shrunk the existing partition using disk utility, then you need to create a new partition in the free space for OS X to use -- the installer will not do this on its own. During the install you need to specify which partition to install OS X on, so if the partition has not been created, it won't be an option to choose from.

Alright, gonna go try making that partition now using Gparted Live. I'll report back!

Actually...reading your message again I need to say that Disk Utility, which I'm using from the OSX Install Disk (I don't have another Mac) will not touch my internal HDD. That's where the free space is. I'm working on getting Gparted to boot so after I create the partition I'll try again and let you know.

Update:

Partitioned the 40 GB free space to a 30 GB HFS+ partition, using Parted Magic Live. Rebooted into the Mac OSX Install DVD v10a432 (on the 16 GB SD card, w/ patched OSInstall and OSInstall.mpkg) and got to Disk Utility. It found the HFS+ partition and read it (YAY!!!).

Next up - actual install. Hit "Continue" to start the install, accepted the EULA, selected my HFS+ partition (actually had to go back and enable journaling on it via Disk Utility, then it worked.) SL starts installing, gets to about 10 mins left and gives me:

08272010223.jpg

I'm stuck  This is a Vanilla OSX disk that I made into a bootable SD card. I put the patched files (OSInstall and OSInstall.mpkg) into the .ISO using TransMac before 'burning' it to the SD card.

The Asus 1005HA has an Atom n280...does that help? My biggest problem is I don't have another Mac...but there HAS TO BE A WAY, right? :)

Anything you've got...I'll take it! ;) Thank you!!

10.6 Good sir, build 10a432. ;)

The error could not copy the necessary support files is maybe the clue. You may find the answer in this search

http://www.google.com.au/search?hl=en&...q=&gs_rfai=

You could try to restore the install dvd to the 16 GB SD card again, for some reason the installer can not read the install packages.

Alright, I'll try restoring it again. I take it that "restoring", done via another Mac, is just basically copying the files from the DVD to a flash drive, right?

Also - where can I find the install log? Saw someone else posted theirs. And removing printer support - is that something that can be done at the installation screen or does that have to be done before making the OSX Installation DVD / SD?

Thanks again

Edit: Found the customization option on installation to unselect the Printers and Languages. Found the error log. I'll post it in a few.

Restoring via another mac is the easiest option if you have access to one. This method may be of help. http://osx86.sojugarden.com/installer/

Yes remove printer support in the installation screen in the custom menu.

Unfortunately I have ZERO access to a Mac...there must be another way though. Anyone have some ideas?

Would posting a log help do you think?

How did you put the files from the DVD on to the SD card or did you?

you said "Rebooted into the Mac OSX Install DVD v10a432 (on the 16 GB SD card, w/ patched OSInstall and OSInstall.mpkg) and got to Disk Utility. It found the HFS+ partition and read it (YAY!!!)."

Have you got a link to the tutorial you used?

Your almost there, the partition is created, the installer boots.

I've forgotten to mention this up to this point: to get to the OS X install SD card, to boot it that is, I have a Netbootinstaller'd flash drive plugged in. When I boot I get to that and then select "Mac OS X Install DVD", and it boots. Not sure if that changes anything?

Alright, I got a .DMG of the retail disc from a friend and converted it to .ISO using 7-Zip (I think it was 7-Zip). That's what my SD card has been made from, that ISO. Before making it I replaced the OSinstall and OSinstall.mpkg from the ones in the original ISO with the patched ones. Then I 'burned' it to the SD card using Image Writer (the program that was mentioned for installing NBI to a flash drive).

I don't remember the tutorial, sorry. I know it had nbi2.html in the URL, it was a popular site on doing Hackintoshes.

Here's the error log from the failed install:

That last part there, with the AddressBook.pkg, looks suspicious to me since it seems to be failing. I'm gonna do some Googlin' on here and see what I can come up with but again any help you can give is AWESOME :(

I start school in about 2 days and I'm gonna be really busy once that happens so I wanna get this babeee working. Thanks everyone!!!

Edit: I have an idea - I may have replaced the default OSInstall and OSInstall.mpkg with patched ones from different builds (10aXXX). Trying to replace them with ones guaranteed for my build now, will report back.

Sorry I posted the whole log, not just the errors portion (man this saving and transferring of log files takes forever...). Oh nevermind...I guess when you save the log it saves ALL portions of it. Ok well anyway, I replaced the OSInstall files with those guaranteed for my build and the same thing happened - here's my log:

Alright guys, here's what happened. My ISO, I think, was messed up just slightly. I was using Image Writer and I also tried using Unetbootin to write the Snow Leopard image to my SD card, so to install it from there. It would start installing and then fail.

I tried again, using TransMac. I opened up my original .DMG, placed the patched OSInstall and OSInstall.mpkg in their respective places, and then used TransMac to write it to the SD card. This time, it installed just fine. I used this guide: http://www.s10lenovo.com/viewtopic.php?f=33&t=4021, the first part of it.

Sitting here with a working Hackintosh, so damn gorgeous. Anyone know how to get sound working?

I can post a full how-to if you want, seems like my situation is quite unique (no mac, no DVD drive, want to keep Windows...).

Also - I set up EasyBCD in Windows BEFORE doing the OS X install, so I get the option for booting either Windows 7 or Mac at boot via the WINDOWS bootloader. I'd like Chameleon though, it's nicer. If I have my NBI flash drive plugged in, it goes to Chameleon after I select Mac on the Windows bootloader but if I don't have it plugged in it says "Chain booting error".

Do I need to install Chameleon via OS X? I assume Windows will be one of the options as it is now when I boot off the NBI flash drive, but can someone confirm?

YAY IT WORKS! :(
