Hey guys, I'm a proud owned of a 5G iPod. But just toinght i tried playing a song and it froze and started making crunching noises. And then it skipped a few songs and continued playing on a song that would work.

Is it time for me to contact apple? What do you think?

I'm just restoring it to factory settings now.

Ok, I'm now certain that its broken.

I get a Disk write error when trying to restore it, "My computer" hangs when its plugged in, and itunes gives me an I/O error.

What do you guys think happened? Dead HDD?

Is it a physical crunching noise? Like one you can hear from the device itself, without wearing the earbuds? That's a sure sign of a bad drive. If it's a sound you hear through the earbuds only, it could be electronics screwed up.

This suggestion may sound wacky, but you can often get stuff off a bad HDD by putting the device in the freezer overnight (well sealed in a plastic zip-top bag) and then trying to read it immediately you take it out. Packing cold stuff around it while you're reading it keeps it cold longer. It doesn't fix a bad drive, but as a last resort it often allows you to get your data off. I've known this work many times on computer drives. Of course you may have to explain to your family why your iPod is sitting under a bag of frozen peas...

Yeah it's a physical noise. I'm just lucky theres no data that I need to get off, as it already in my iTunes library. But I finally managed to Format it in windows, using a quick format. Then transferred songs back over. It took longer than usual but it said it was complete. However I cannot see any songs or anything in my songs menu on my iPod.

I will be contacting apple sometime today. :D

That means the read head dived. Which put simply, means it fell into the hard drive's platter and ground into it (thus the crunching noise). The read head is the little arm that is sitting against the platters. Most likely it damaged a track of data, but then you were able to move into other songs that were still "clean" and undamaged. Unfortunately the debris and imbalance caused by the dive lead to perminant damage which eventually nuked the drive. Yeah, that's a lot of explaining, but that's pretty much what happens 90% of the time when something "crunches". If you were interested :(
